A few observations were mentioned in an earlier paper (COMPS, 1969) that concerned the histological features of the lesions that appeared during the gill infection to which Crassostrea angulata has been particularly prone since 1966. Since it has, however, not been possible to date to isolate and grow a culture of the parasite presumed to be the responsible agent of the disease, a more complete anatomopathological and histological study was contemplated in order to try to specify the definition of the offending protist and reveal the process of deterioration of the oyster's tissues as well as the reactions of the host to the infestation by and growth of the parasite. In addition, importing Crassostrea gigas THUNBERG from Japan at the very moment that gill... |

The artificial production of oyster spats in Japan and the USA provided inspiration to some French oyster farmers who thought that, at a time when stocking up Crassostrea gigas spats was getting more difficult, it would be interesting to try out the nutrition techniques developed by Japanese and American specialists. In this way, in La Tremblade, in the Marennes basin, M. Paul Jarno set up some structures aimed at artificial oyster reproduction. Trials started in 1968 and continued in July 1969. The first step was to assess the material and structures' usability and to take a closer look at the practical larval nutrition conditions in order to obtain fixed spats. This document is a collection of the observations carried out during the different trials. |

From 1988 to 1989, a study has been conducted pertaining to the growth of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis, as well as Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae outbreaks. Commercial mono specific farming (flat oysters), with low density or mixed (flat and hollow oysters) along with higher density, has been taking place in the Arcachon basin oceanographic sectors, where main hydrobiological parameters were acquired simultaneously. The excellent growth of the flat oyster was witnessed in mono specific farming. However this growth was average in mixed farming, probably due to higher total oyster density and interspecies competition. Regardless of the type of farming, Marteilia refringens infection was very quick and may have been related to climatic bay water... |

Virus infections have been associated with major diseases of oysters of the genus Crassostrea. These infections include gill necrosis virus and hemocytic infection virus diseases of the Portuguese oyster C. angulata and more recently the oyster velar virus disease affecting larval, hatchery-reared Pacific oysters C. gigas. This report presents histo- and cytopathological characteristics of these infections in which large icosahedral cytoplasmic deoxyriboviruses, similar to the iridoviridae, are implicated, The gill necrosis virus causes, principally in the Portuguese oyster, an evolutive ulceration of the gills, including cellular hypertrophy and severe inflammation. Mortalities have been observed in the most serious cases. Hemocytic infection virus has... |

Abnormal mortalities of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, have been monitored in June 1979 in some farms of l'Ile Tudy. The examination of these oysters with light and electron microscopy showed different forms of an intracellular parasite localized in the connective tissue of the gills and the digestive gland. It is also detectable in the blood vessels and the stomachal epithelium. Numerous parasited oysters showed distinctive branchial damages (perforations, indentations) visible through macroscopic examination. The epidemiological monitoring carried out on the Norman and Breton coast revealed the presence of this parasite in a large number of flat oyster farms. The percentage of parasited oysters is higher in areas where mortalities have been monitored but... |

Following a number of mortalities reported on the flat oyster farms of the Ile Tudy in June 1979, a Protiste, a parasite then unknown in France, was found in the sick oysters. Located mainly in the connective tissue and the branchial epithelium, this parasite is associated with tissue damage. It can be either of a free type or of an intracellular type, both corresponding to small size cells (2 to 3 µm) and displaying, next to their core, one or two mitochondrion and some structured electron-dense particles. Moreover, different mitosis stages, with nuclear membrane persistence, have been observed. These ultrastructural characteristics show some similarities and differences with the Haplosporidies and Marteilia groups. |

Summer mortalities in the Pacific oyster in the Bay of Arcachon were analysed during four years (1981 to 1984). Mortalities occur mostly among one year old oyster and affect the whole bay, with different prevalence. The phenomenon occurs at certain times during the summer spawning period and is associated with high temperatures. A thinning of the digestive tubule epithelium is observed, but there is no evidence of infectious disease. The failure to find a causative agent, pollution or pathogen, tends to strengthen a physiological disorder hypothesis, related to environmental conditions. The influence of external (temperature, available food) and internai factors (length, maturation, spawning) on this phenomenon is discussed. A comparaison is drawn with... |
