A note on Rhipilia nigrescens Coppejans & Prud’homme van Reine (Chlorophyta) Naturalis
Coppejans, E.; Prud’homme van Reine, W.F..
In our paper on seaweeds of the Snellius-II expedition (Coppejans & Prud’homme van Reine, 1989) we suggested that the new species Rhipilia nigrescens had been described in Phycologia. Due to regulations of that journal and corroborated by the short spell between acceptance and publication in Blumea, the Latin description can no longer be expected to be published as suggested. To validate the name of the new species a Latin description and a designation of the holotype is published here.

The genus Dictyota (Dictyotaceae, Phaeophyta) from Indonesia in the herbarium Weber-van Bosse, including the description of Dictyota canaliculata spec. nov Naturalis
Clerck, O. de; Coppejans, E..
In the framework of a revision of the genus Dictyota J.V. Lamour. in the Indian Ocean, all specimens from Indonesia present in the herbarium Weber-van Bosse (L) were re-examined. This resulted in a total of 9 species, one species including two different growth forms. Our identifications differ substantially from those of Weber-van Bosse (1913). Specimens recorded as D. apiculata J. Agardh were re-identified as D. crispata J.V. Lamour., which is the correct name for D. bartayresiana sensu Vickers; similarly was D. bartayresiana var. ß re-identified as D. cervicornis Kütz., D. fasciola (Roth) J.V. Lamour. as D. ceylanica Kütz. and D. ceylanica Kütz. var. rotundata Weber Bosse as D. friabilis Setch. Dictyota pardalis Kütz. considered as a distinct species by...

Progress of the taxonomic research on the macroalgae (Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta) along the East African coast OceanDocs
Coppejans, E.; De Clerck, O.; Leliaert, F.; Dargent, O..
This paper discusses the phycological research and gives a historical overview of papers dealing with macroalgae from the East African coast. A review of the recent progress towards a marine algal flora of the region is presented. Additionally a limited number of taxonomic problems are discussed, with emphasis on examples from Tanzania and Zanzibar. Problems comprise generic, specific and subspecific distinctions, perpetuation of wrong identifications from reference works , and checklists with doubtful identifications that lack voucher specimens. Finally a list of 91 new species for Kenya (23), Tanzania (24), the East African coast (26) and the Indian Ocean (18) is added.

Un nouveau genre de Peyssonneliaceae, <i>Metapeyssonnelia</i> (Rhodophyta) OMA
Boudouresque, C.F.; Coppejans, E.; Marcot, J..
<i>Metapeyssonnelia</i>, a new genus of the Peyssonneliaceae (Rhodophyta), is described. This encrusting orbicular alga is completely calcified by aragonite. Small unicellular rhizoids are present. The centre of the thallus shows a <i>Peyssonnelia</i>-like structure that metamorphes towards the margins of older thalli: in these metamorphosed parts, an inferior perithallus is generated downwards. Each hypothallic cell gives rise to only one coxal cell, even in the metamorphosed parts: this characteristic distinguishes the structure of <i>Metapeyssonnelia</i> from that of <i>Polystrata</i>. The type species is <i>M. feldmannii</i> nov. sp., collected at Port-Cros island (Mediterranean, France).

Remote sensing and zonation of seagrasses and algae along the Kenyan coast OMA
Dahdouh-Guebas, F.; Coppejans, E.; Van Speybroeck, D..
Little information has been published on space-borne remote sensing of seagrasses, and no information is available about the distribution of seagrasses and algae in East Africa. Through satellite remote sensing this study investigates the distribution of these plants along a southern section of the Kenyan coast. The visible bands (red, green and blue) and the near infra-red band of a Landsat Thematic Mapper image acquired in 1992 were combined in order to detect seagrasses and algae in 10 sectors along the section of the coast. Ground trusting was done at three locations along the same section. Results indicate that two distinct zones of vegetation can be recognised, and ground trusting reveals their identity is rocky substrate with mostly algae and...

Marine green algae (Chlorophyta) from the north coast of Papua New Guinea OMA
Coppejans, E.; Leliaert, F.; Dargent, O.; De Clerck, O..
The marine benthic green algae of the north coast of Papua New Guinea (mainly from Madang province) are documented, based on collections made by the first author between 1980 and 1990. All records (118 taxa) are listed with bibliographic, taxonomic, nomenclatural and biogeographical notes. Identification keys are added for genera represented by at least two species. Representatives of the Pseudocodiaceae and some Udoteaceae are illustrated. The green algal flora of the north coast appears to be much richer than that of the south coast where 72 taxa, including 19 unchecked records from literature, are recorded from the Port Moresby area.

L' épiflore des substrats de l'étage circalittoral dans la Baie de Calvi (Corse-Méditerranée): 2 . Méthodes et relevés OMA
Coppejans, E..
The author describes the methods used for the phytosociological study of the epiflora of the upper part of the circalittoral zone (-30/-68 m), mainly on loose substrate, in the Bay of Calvi (Corsica-Mediterranean Sea). A description of the 32 relevés is given and a table is added with the results of the sorting: number and cover of Chloro-, Phaeo- and Rhodophyceae, total number of species and the sum of the coverages for each rélevé.

Sur <i>Polysiphonia banyulensis</i> nov. sp. (Ceramiales, Rhodophyceae) OMA
Coppejans, E..
<i>Polysiphonia banyulensis</i> nov. sp. (section <i>Oligosiphonia</i>) is a species with four pericentral cells, without any cortication. The isolated erect thalii have pseudodichotomous ramifications that are markedly narrower at their base: they originate in the axils of trichoblasts. These are very large and are characterized by the very large sub-basal cell. The phyllotaxis of the trichoblasts is 1/4 but the number of segments that occur between two trichoblasts is variable. The tetraspores occur isolated or in two contiguous segments in the upper half of the thallus. The male and female gametophytes are still unknown. Collected at Banyuls-sur-Mer, Pyrénées-Orientales, France in July 1974.

Coppejans, E.; De Vos, D..
The Rhodophyceae <i>Acrochaetium secundatum</i> (Lyngb.) Näg. and <i>Aglaothamnium scopulorum</i> (C. Ag.) G. Feldman.-Maz. var. <i>polyspermum</i> (C. Ag.) Halos have frequently been collected along the pier of Zeebrugge (Belgium) in 1977, 1978 and 1979. Both taxa have not been mentioned along the Belgian coast until now. The problem of their distinction from closely related species is discussed.
