Ex Ante Economic Impact of Genetically Modified (GM) Cowpea in Benin AgEcon
Dofonsou, Sika Gbegbelegbe; Lowenberg-DeBoer, James; Adeoti, Razack; Coulibaly, Ousmane; Lusk, Jayson L..
The net impact of pest-resistant GM crops on the welfare of both producers and consumers in developing countries is currently unknown and subject to speculation. This study uses choice-based conjoint protocol to estimate the net impact of pest-resistant Genetically Modified (GM) cowpea on net social welfare in Benin given price and income risks. Results imply that Bt cowpea will increase expected net social welfare by about $US 50 million per year in Benin given no inefficiencies in the seed sector. If inefficiencies in the seed sector are such that cowpea growers can access Bt cowpea seeds only 50% of the time, net benefits from Bt cowpea drop to about $US 11 million per year.

Farmers’ Perceptions and Willingness to Pay for Metarhizium-based Biopesticide to Control Cotton Bollworms in Benin (West Africa) AgEcon
Adetonah, Sounkoura; Coulibaly, Ousmane; Nouhoheflin, Theodore; Kooyman, C.; Kpindou, D..
The study assesses farmers’ perceptions and willingness to pay for a biopesticide developed from Metarhizium anisopliae a fungi. A sample of 400 conventional and organic cotton producers was randomly selected in cotton producing zones in Benin and interviewed for their perceptions on the efficacy of the biopesticide and the likely prices they are willing to pay for the product to control a major pest like Helicoverpa armigera or cotton bollworm causing substantial crop losses. An econometric model (Logit) is used to identify factors highly likely to affect farmer’s willingness to purchase the product. The results show that Helicoverpa armigera or cotton bollworm is perceived by farmers as the most severe pest with losses reaching up to 100%. Farmers...

Déterminants de l’achat des semences améliorées de cultures maraîchères dans les structures formelles AgEcon
Tchuinte, Ghislaine Simeni; Coulibaly, Ousmane; Biaou, Gauthier.

Agricultural Value Chain Development in West Africa – Methodological framework and case study of mango in Benin AgEcon
van Melle, Cathelijne; Coulibaly, Ousmane; Hell, Kerstin.
Globalization and competitiveness of agricultural commodities could have significant potential benefits for food security and poverty reduction in West Africa. Participation in global trade and economy is potentially important but not enough to ensure benefits at all levels of the chains and equitable distribution of income for each participant. Efficiency is key in the commodity value chain, but effective support functions and services, infrastructure, legal and policy environment are important. This paper presents the framework of value chain concept and analysis, as a guide to enhance competitiveness of commodities at national, regional or global level. The paper applies the value chain framework to a case study on mango in Benin, West Africa. The...

Nouhoheflin, Theodore; Coulibaly, Ousmane; Cherry, Andy J.; Al-Hassan, Ramatu M.; Adegbola, Patrice Ygue.
Vegetable plays important roles in the socio-economic development in West Africa. It contributes to insuring food security, provides raw materials for local industries, generates foreign exchange and provides employment and incomes for most of the population. However some health hazards are caused by the misuse of chemical on vegetable. This study is undertaken within the framework of the research project: Public-private partnerships for development and implementation of entomopathogenic viruses as biopesticides for key lepidopteran pests in Ghana and Benin. It assesses the potential market of organic vegetables and analyse consumers awareness and perceptions of chemical pesticide residues in vegetables and assess the premium levels that consumers are...

Does heterogeneity in goals and preferences affect allocative and technical efficiency? A case study in Northern Nigeria AgEcon
Berkhout, Ezra D.; Schipper, Robert A.; Kuyvenhoven, Arie; Coulibaly, Ousmane.
Household characteristics are commonly used to explain variation in smallholder efficiency levels. The underlying assumption is that differences in intended behavior are well described by such variables, while there is no a priori reason that this is the case. Moreover, heterogeneity in farmer goals and preferences, in relation to the role of the farm enterprise, are not well documented in developing countries. This paper makes a contribution to fill this gap, by empirically determining heterogeneity in farmer goals and attitudes in Nigeria through a pair-wise ranking, supplemented with Likert scales. Factor analysis is used to reduce these data into behavioral factors. We estimate technical and allocative efficiency levels and analyze how these are...
