Fructan production in Vernonia herbacea (Vell.) Rusby is related to adequate nitrogen supply and period of cultivation Rev. Bras. Bot.
Cuzzuol,Geraldo R. F.; Carvalho,Maria Angela M.; Zaidan,Lilian B. P..
Previous studies showed that plants of Vernonia herbacea grown for one year under a limited nitrogen supply presented reduced growth and higher fructan content than plants treated with sufficient nitrogen supply. However, the total fructan production was similar in both plant groups due to the higher biomass of the underground reserve organ in nitrogen-sufficient (N-sufficient) plants. In the present study we aimed to evaluate if a stress growing condition under nitrogen-limited (N-limited) supply, following cultivation under N-sufficient supply would have a positive effect on fructan production. Plants cultivated during one year under N-sufficient supply (10.7 mmol L-1 N-NO3-) were separated in two groups. During the following six months, one group...

Spatial and temporal variation of the nutrients in the sediment and leaves of two Brazilian mangrove species and their role in the retention of environmental heavy metals Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Bernini,Elaine; Silva,Maria A. B. da; Carmo,Tania M. S. do; Cuzzuol,Geraldo R. F..
Spatial and temporal variation of the nutrient concentrations in leaves and sediment between the roots of Laguncularia racemosa (L.) Gaertn. f and Rhizophora mangle L. was analyzed in the mangrove forest of the estuary of São Mateus River, Espírito Santo, Brazil. In leaves, the nutrients followed the sequence: N> Ca> K> Mg> S> P> Fe> Mn> Zn> Cu, and there were significant differences between species and sites studied. In general, the levels of K were higher in the dry season compared to the rainy season for both species analyzed while Ca and Cu showed higher concentrations in the rainy season for Laguncularia racemosa. In the sediment, the nutrients followed the sequence: Mg> Ca> Fe> K> Mn> P> Zn> Cu, in...

Light as an indicator of ecological succession in brazilwood (Caesalpinia echinata Lam.) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Mengarda,Liana H. G.; Souza,Rogério L. F. de; Campostrini,Eliemar; Reis,Fabrício O.; Vendrame,Wagner A.; Cuzzuol,Geraldo R. F..
The ecophysiological behavior of brazilwood (Caesalpinia echinata Lam.) plants was evaluated as affected by light quantity and quality. Nine-month-old plants were cultivated under 0%, 50%, and 80% artificial shading, and natural shading imposed by a closed canopy for a period of 392 days. At the end of that period growth parameters were measured, including relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), leaf area ratio (LAR), specific leaf mass (SLM) and root:shoot ratio (R:S). Higher leaf area, dry mass and RGR were obtained under 50% artificial shade. Under full sunlight (0% shade), growth was satisfactory showing higher R:S and SLM. Growth was inhibited under 80% artificial and natural shading indicating that C. echinata is not...
