REVALUATION OF LATRODECTUS THORACICUS NICOLET, 1849 (ARANEAE: THERIDIIDAE): BIOLOGICAL AND PHYLOGENETIC ANTECEDENTS

A new tribe of sigmodontine rodents is formally defined and diagnosed. The tribe contains the extant genera Abrothrix (including Chroeomys), Chelemys, Geoxus, Pearsonomys, and Notiomys, a group of taxa distributed in the central and southern Andes and lowlands both east and west of the cordillera. The new tribe presents a unique combination of characters including nasals and premaxilla usually projected anterior to the incisors, moderately trumpeted; zygomatic plate with upper free border reduced or obsolete; and third upper molar reduced and sub-cylindrical in out-line with an internal ring-like enamel fossette. Molecular phylogenetic analyses indicate that Abrothrix is sister to a clade containing the remaining genera of the new tribe.

The number and identity of the species of black widow spiders of the genus Latrodectus that inhabit Chile remain unclear. Here we present results of taxonomic work based on morphologic and molecular characters of a large series of specimens collected throughout Chile, which aimed to assess Chilean Latrodectus diversity. Results show that all studied populations belong to a single species, for which the correct name is Latrodectus thoracicus Nicolet 1849. Therefore, we remove this taxon from the synonymy of L. mactans (Fabricius, 1775). In addition, we suggest that L. mirabilis (Holmberg, 1876) may be junior synonym of L. thoracicus. Phylogenetic analysis of a fragment of the mitochondrial genome and qualitative and quantitative assessments of morphological variation suggest that, in its current conception, Thylamys pusillus (Desmarest, 1804) is a complex of at least three species. Recientes trabajos de campo en los alrededores de la localidad tipo de Akodon sylvanus nos han permitido colectar ejemplares de esta forma pobremente conocida. En este trabajo se genera por primera vez una hipótesis filogenética explícita que incluye a este taxón. El análisis filogenético junto con las comparaciones morfológicas efectuadas demuestran que A. sylvanus constituye una especie válida diferente de A. azarae y A. pervalens, dos taxones que en su momento fueron considerados como parte de la misma entidad. Diferenciación morfológica en sigmodontinos (Rodentia: Cricetidae) de las Guayanas Venezolanas con relación a su locomoción y habitat

Reiteradamente se ha mencionado una presunta asociación entre morfología, tipos de locomoción y preferencia de hábitat en sigmodontinos. Sin embargo, pocos estudios han puesto a prueba este vínculo. Nuevas localidades argentinas para algunos roedores sigmodontinos (Rodentia: Cricetidae)

New localities for 24 species of sigmodontine rodents in Argentina are reported based on records obtained by direct trapping and/or the analyses of owl pellets. This report includes the first Argentinean record for Akodon boliviensis and Necromys amoenus. Additionally, we extend the known distribution for Akodon budini, A. sylvanus, A. toba, Necromys cf. N. lasiurus, Calomys musculinus, Loxodontomys micropus, Phyllotis osilae, P. xanthopygus, and Phyllotis wolffsohni. Annual male reproductive cycle of a Hantavirus reservoir, the long-tailed mouse Oligoryzomys flavescens (Rodentia; Cricetidae, Sigmodontinae) from Uruguay

We studied the reproductive cycle in males of the cricetid rodent species Oligoryzomys flavescens (Waterhouse, 1837), collected in northern Uruguay. From February 2001 to February 2002, specimens were captured in grasslands and exotic forests. Determination of the reproductive condition was based on external characteristics of gonads as well as histological and histometric analysis. Graomys hypogaeus Cabrera, 1934 es un sinónimo de Eligmodontia moreni (Thomas, 1896)

Se estudió el holotipo de Graomys hypogaeus Cabrera, 1934, una especie correspondiente al género Eligmodontia de acuerdo a autores previos. Sobre la base de caracteres morfológicos y métricos se concluye que G. hypogaeus debe ser considerado un sinónimo junior de Eligmodontia moreni (Thomas, 1896), una especie ampliamente distribuida en el centro-oeste de Argentina.
