| Colombia is recognized as a megadiverse country on the basis of the number of terrestrial animal and plant species occurring within its boundaries. However, due to the circumstance that it possesses coasts on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, each of them exhibiting distinct geological, oceanographic, and climatic features, Colombia is perhaps the country with the highest marine biological diversity in South America and one of the most biodiverse in the New World. | Siete especies de cefalópodos de aguas profundas fueron identificadas entre el material colectado en cuatro cruceros exploratorios realizados durante 1998 y 1999, a lo largo del talud superior del Caribe colombiano, entre 200 y 500 m de profundidad. Semirossia tenera, S. equalis, Heteroteuthis dispar, Opisthoteuthis agassizii, Octopus burryi y Benthoctopus oregonae son registradas por primera vez para el área. S. tenera fue la especie más común, acumulando el 75% de la abundancia total. |
