A proper understanding of inshore marine ecosystems cannot be obtained without a thorough knowledge of marine vegetation. This paper summarises our knowledge of species diversity patterns of marine macroalgae in Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting gaps. In Tropical East Africa the seaweed floras of Somalia and Mozambique are not well known. In Tropical West Africa, only a small number of countries are well-collected, although recent advances, including web-based systems, are ensuring that the information which is available can be more easily accessed. South Africa and Namibia have quite well documented seaweed floras, although detailed collections, especially in the subtidal, or detailed studies of taxa, particularly using molecular methods, anywhere in the... |

This paper discusses the phycological research and gives a historical overview of papers dealing with macroalgae from the East African coast. A review of the recent progress towards a marine algal flora of the region is presented. Additionally a limited number of taxonomic problems are discussed, with emphasis on examples from Tanzania and Zanzibar. Problems comprise generic, specific and subspecific distinctions, perpetuation of wrong identifications from reference works , and checklists with doubtful identifications that lack voucher specimens. Finally a list of 91 new species for Kenya (23), Tanzania (24), the East African coast (26) and the Indian Ocean (18) is added. |

Two new species of the genus Hypoglossum Kützing (Delesseriaceae, Rhodophyta) are described: H. androlamellare sp. nov. from Zanzibar Island, Tanzania, and H. annae sp. nov. from the Malay Archipelago. The former is the first species of Hypoglossum to be reported from Tanzania and is distinguished by a combination of its overall habit, the chevron-like arrangement of the spermatangial sori, and the non-participation of lateral pericentral cells in sporangium formation within the tetrasporangia sori. The latter species is based on the material identified by Weber-van Bosse as “Hypoglossum spathulatum Kützing” ( [16] and [17] , as Delesseria... |

The marine benthic red algae of Motupore Island and vicinity (Port Moresby area, Papua New Guinea [PNG]) are documented and 36 of the 161 species are illustrated. All records are listed with bibliographic, biogeographic, taxonomic and nomenclatural comments. Apart from several undescribed taxa, which we are in the process of describing separately, none is endemic to the island at this stage. The discovery of the east Australian species Gracilaria rhodymenioides represents a substantial range extension as does Ceramium lentiforme from New South Wales. One species of Gibsmithia also represents a significant range extension from its Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and southern Great Barrier Reef... |
