Vaccination of European sea bass fry through bioencapsulation of <i>Artemia</i> nauplii OMA

European sea bass (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>) fry vaccinated orally by bioencapsulation in <i>Artemia nauplii</i> or by bath method exhibited better performance than control fish in terms of growth, food conversion and resistance to stress. The comparable survival between vaccinated and non-vaccinated animals suggests that vaccination methods are stressful. The present study shows that oral vaccination can be used to enhance growth in fish fry.

Dependable availability of quality fry to stock grow-out production systems has been one of the most critical factors in the commercial success of industrial production of fish and shellfish. Large-scale production of marine fish fry was realized only from the 1980s onwards. Although Japan was the pioneer with the red sea bream (<i>Pagrus major</i>), the most competitive hatchery methods were eventually developed in Europe for the sea bass (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>) and the gilthead sea bream (<i>Sparus aurata</i>). Improvements in the larviculture of turbot <i>Scophthalmus maximus</i>: zootechnical and nutritional aspects, possibility for disease control OMA

The rotifer feeding regime for larval turbot could be improved by more regular feeding and adjusted food distributions as to prevent overfeeding and digestion problems. All tests were successfully run in clear-water conditions indicating that the administration of algae is not essential during the rotifer stage. Larval requirements with respect to (n-3) RUFA, and more specifically DRA and DRA/EPA ratio appeared to change according to the age of the larvae and the physiological condition at the different larval stages. As early as the first week the stress resistance of the larvae could be improved by feeding rotifers specifically enriched in DRA. In the present experiments we have demonstrated increased protection against a pathogenic bacterium in juvenile turbot (<i>Scophthalmus maximus L.</i>), after feeding the juveniles the live food organism <i>Artemia</i> enriched with a suspension of alginate micro-spheres containing an immunostimulant. Most likely the effect was due to stimulation of the non-specific defence of the juveniles. Poor control of the microbial conditions in the intensive rearing facilities may adversely affect the health of fish larvae, and is most likely one of the main factors restricting production of marine juveniles. Ascorbic acid (AA) is an essential nutrient in particle and live aquafeeds. In order to better assess the needs for this nutrient during larviculture the AA content of algae, rotifers and <i>Artemia</i> was studied with respect to their suitability at startfeeding. In general, the microalgae evaluated were rich in AA (1000-4000 µgAA/gDW), but showed a considerable variability among the different species: e.g. the concentration in <i>Isochrysis</i> and<i>Chlorella</i> reached values 3-to 4-fold the percentage of <i>Tetraselmis</i> (0.11% of DW). <i>Brachionus</i> routinely cultured on <i>Chlorella</i> contained 2300 µg AA/gDW. Bioencapsulation of the antibacterial drug sarafloxacin in nauplii of the brine shrimp <i>Artemia franciscana</i> OMA

Nauplii of the brine shrimp <i>Artemia franciscana</i> were enriched with the antibacterial drug sarafloxacin hydrochloride to determine if levels effective against four pathogenetic strains of <i>Vibrio</i> spp. would accumulate in brine shrimp. Three vibrio strains were <i>Vibrio anguillarum</i>; the fourth was <i>V. vulnificus</i>. Concentrations of sarafloxacin ranging from 1 to 40% (weight: volume) were incorporated into the oil phase of Super Selco brine shrimp diets. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of oral delivery of the antibiotics Trimethoprim (TMP) and Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) to marine fish larvae through incorporation of these antibiotics into the live food organism <i>Artemia</i>. SMX and TMP were selected for their wide range action against gram negative pathogenic bacteria and because of their limited solubility in seawater. Ormetoprim-Sulfadimethoxine (brand name Romet-30) is a new combination of a similar antimicrobial drug used in aquaculture. With the advent of intensive culture practices, occurrences of mass mortality caused by bacterial infections are commonplace. High doses of antibiotics or antibacterials are used in aquaculture by adding them to the water. Problems of palatability and leaching occur when the chemotherapeutic agents are incorporated in feeds. To circumvent these problems <i>Artemia</i> can be used as a carrier. In this study we assess the efficacy of cotrimoxazole in the oral treatment of turbot larvae challenged with a pathogenic strain of Vibrio anguillarum encapsulated in <i>Artemia</i>.

An oral challenge for turbot larvae with <i>Vibrio anguillarum</i> OMA

There is a need for a standard in vitro procedure to infect larval fish with bacteria. Such a procedure could be used as a tool to evaluate fish quality, verify fish sensitivity to a certain bacterial strain or evaluate the pathogenicity of a bacterium towards a given fish species. The availability of a challenge test is a prerequisite in studies dealing with the effect of different medicinal treatments on diseased fish. An oral challenge test would offer the possibility to investigate the routes of infection via the digestive tract, i.e. after feeding contaminated feeds. Variability of the microbial environment of rotifer <i>Brachionus plicatilis</i> and <i>Artemia</i> production systems OMA

Samplings were organized in three marine fish hatcheries. Samples were taken at different steps during the production of algae, rotifers and <i>Artemia</i> . There were 233 dominant colony types isolated for further characterization. The isolates were compared to each other and to reference strains of <i>Photobacterium, Vibrio</i> and <i>Alteromonas</i>, using cellular fatty acid fingerprints. Fatty acid profiles of the isolates were grouped using principal component analysis. The isolates fell into at least ten major groups, of which two correspond to the genera <i>Vibrio</i> and to <i>Alteromonas</i>, respectively.
