The feasibility of a new accelerated procedure to determine the “value of biodiversity” of agricultural holdings was tested on 80 farms in in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. The results of the practical application show, that the indicator system is a suitable method to be applied in the context of consultations on nature conservation on farms. Farm advisory also implied grants for conservation schemes. Implementation of measures on organic as well as on conventional farms was notably high. A proposal for a new contract nature protection scheme was tested on selected arable fields of organic farms in northern Germany. Management specifications included small scale division of large fields combined with specifications for crop distribution as well as for proportion of flower strips. Results of collateral bird registrations proved positive effects of the scheme on diversity and abundance of (threatened) breeding and roosting bird species. Due to the results, the scheme was included in the current (regional) rural development program Schleswig-Holstein.
