Imprint of Holocene Climate Variability on Cold-Water Coral Reef Growth at the SW Rockall Trough margin, NE Atlantic ArchiMer
Bonneau, Lucile; Colin, Christophe; Pons-branchu, Edwige; Mienis, Furu; Tisnerat-laborde, Nadine; Blamart, Dominique; Elliot, Mary; Collart, Tim; Frank, Norbert; Foliot, Lorna; Douville, Eric.
U‐Th ages and temperatures derived from Li/Mg have been measured on coral fragments of Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora. oculata collected from two sediment cores, which were taken from cold‐water coral (CWC) mounds at 700 ‐ 790 m water depth at the SW Rockall Trough margin. Our data, combined with previous published data, have allowed us to firstly estimate the occurrence of CWC at the SW Rockall Trough margin during the Holocene and, secondly, to better constrain the environmental conditions driving variability in CWC growth. CWC abundance is marked by a pronounced increase in the mid‐Holocene (∼6 ka) and is modulated by millennial‐scale variability throughout the late Holocene. The mid‐Holocene proliferation of CWC coincides with lowest IRD abundances and...

Rapid changes in ocean circulation and climate have been observed in marine-sediment and ice cores over the last glacial period and deglaciation, highlighting the non-linear character of the climate system and underlining the possibility of rapid climate shifts in response to anthropogenic greenhouse gas forcing. To date, these rapid changes in climate and ocean circulation are still not fully explained. One obstacle hindering progress in our understanding of the interactions between past ocean circulation and climate changes is the difficulty of accurately dating marine cores. Here, we present a set of 92 marine sediment cores from the Atlantic Ocean for which we have established age-depth models that are consistent with the Greenland GICC05 ice core...

Growth of north-east Atlantic cold-water coral reefs and mounds during the Holocene: A high resolution U-series and C-14 chronology ArchiMer
Douarin, Melanie; Elliot, Mary; Noble, Stephen R.; Sinclair, Daniel; Henry, Lea-anne; Long, David; Moreton, Steven G.; Roberts, J. Murray.
We investigated the Holocene growth history of the Mingulay Reef Complex, a seascape of inshore cold-water coral reefs off western Scotland, using U-series and radiocarbon dating methods. Both chronologies revealed episodic occurrences of the reef framework-forming scleractinian coral Lophelia pertusa during the late Holocene. Downcore U-series dating revealed unprecedented reef growth rates of up to 12 mm a(-1) with a mean rate of 3-4 mm a(-1). Our study highlighted a persistent hiatus in coral occurrence from 1.4 ka to modern times despite present day conditions being conducive for coral growth. The growth history of the complex was punctuated at least twice by periods of reduced growth rates: 1.75-2.8 ka, 3.2-3.6 ka and to a lesser extent at 3.8-4 ka...
