Competitive forbs in high-producing temporary grasslands with perennial ryegrass and red clover can increase plant diversity and herbage yield Organic Eprints
Dhamala, N.R.; Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J..
European agriculture focuses on increasing biodiversity. However, in highly productive temporary grasslands in grass / arable systems, the biodiversity is usually low. Three non-leguminous species have shown high competitive strength in temporary grasslands and ample possibility to increase biodiversity without compromising yields. In this experiment, we examined in detail the competitiveness and productivity of the three forb species: chicory (Cichorium intybus), ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) and caraway (Carum carvi) grown in different proportions in mixtures including traditional grassland species: perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and red clover (Trifolium pratense), with fertiliser application as an additional factor. Dry matter (DM) yield...

Nitrate leaching in grazed grasslands of different composition and age Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Vinther, F.P..
In a field experiment at Research Centre Foulum a suction cup technique was used to investigate nitrate leaching from grassland depending on composition (grass-clover or perennial ryegrass), management (grazing or cutting) and age of the swards. In 1997-2001 was investigated the successive nitrate leaching from 4-7 year old grazed grass-clover and ryegrass with cut plots of similar age and spring barley as reference. In 2000-2001 the simultaneous nitrate leaching from newly established swards, swards grazed for 1 and 7 years and swards cut for 7 years was investigated. In the newly established swards nitrate leaching from grass-clover and ryegrass were similar but at increasing sward age nitrate leaching from the fertilized ryegrass increased dramatically...

Organic manures as sources of fertiliser sulphur Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J..
On a global scale, S excretion from domestic animals may be estimated to around 8 million t per year, corresponding to 80% of the World S consumption for mineral fertiliser manufacture. The utilisation of this potential source of fertiliser-S is discussed focusing on the use of manure from housing and manure storages applied to agricultural land. Especially in the developed countries the S content of manure collected from cattle and pigs (1 million t S per year) has a potential as S-fertiliser, as legal demands on the utilisation of manure N and/or P already require the use of animal wastes as fertilisers. Content and composition of manure-S from both monogastrics and ruminants may be extremely variable, depending on the S content of the feed. If the diet...

Gross sulphur mineralisation-immobilisation turnover in soil amended with plant residues Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J..
The rates of sulphur (S) released to and removed from the soil inorganic pool were estimated using the isotopic dilution technique. In an initial study fresh soil was mixed with combinations of two inorganic S levels (0 and 10 µg S g-1 soil) and three plant residues (wheat straw, perennial ryegrass and oilseed rape) and followed over 32 days of incubation. As 35S recovery was inadequate prior to day 2 and re-mineralisation of immobilised 35S occurred after day 8 thereby invalidating the method, estimates of gross S transformation rates should be based on data sampled between days 2 and 8. In the main experiment 16 plant residues with ranges in S contents of 0.08-0.81%, C/S ratios of 50-604 and lignin content of 0.9-10.8 were mixed with soil and...

Effect of deep-rooted plant species on 15Nitrogen uptake and herbage yield in temporary agricultural grasslands Organic Eprints
Pirhofer-Walzl, K.; Eriksen, J.; Rasmussen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Høgh-Jensen, H.; Rasmussen, J..
Aims: Increase of plant diversity has been suggested to enhance grassland productivity and resource use efficiency. Most studies on agricultural grasslands have focused on functional diversity of mixtures comprising legumes and non-legumes, but there is little knowledge of plant nutrient acquisition from deep- and shallow-rooted grassland plant species. To investigate whether deep-rooted (chicory: Cichorium intybus L.; Lucerne: Medicago sativa L.) and shallow-rooted (perennial ryegrass: Lolium perenne L.; white clover: Trifolium repens L.) grassland plant species differ in herbage yield and depth dependent soil N-access, we investigated in the field if 1) a mixture comprising shallow- and deep-rooted grassland plant species has greater herbage yields than...

Leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) from grass-clover pastures after ploughing Organic Eprints
Vinther, F.P.; Eriksen, J.; Hansen, E.M..
In mixed arable grassland systems there can be a considerable build-up of nitrogen (N) caused by input through symbiotic N2 fixation and by the deposition from grazing animals. After ploughing of such grazed grassland large amounts of inorganic N may be released through mineralisation and subsequently leached to deeper soil layers or eventually to the groundwater. However, not much is known about the contribution of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) to the total amount of N leached.

Can managed grasslands enhance pollinators in intensively farmed areas? Organic Eprints
Dupont, Y.L.; Cong, W-F; Eriksen, J..
Wild flower strips is a common agri-environmental scheme used by farmers and land managers in order to improve biodiversity of pollinators. However, managed grasslands may also provide flower resources for flower visiting insects in agricultural landscapes. Botanically diverse grasslands on arable farms may support a range of wild pollinators, enhancing pollination services of crops. Intensively managed leys, on the other hand, typically contain only a few high-yielding, competitively strong species. One of the aims of the Multiplant project (2014-2018) was to test perennial seed mixtures targeted for bio-energy, feed protein and biodiversity, in order to develop multi-functional seed mixtures for grasslands. In the current study, we specifically...

Svovl i økologiske sædskifter Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J..

Residual effects of cutting and grazing on grass/clover growth Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Askegaard, M..
The residual effect of cutting and grazing during the growing season was investigated in the spring and summer growth in an organic crop rotation with 1-4 year-old grass-clover mixtures of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) either with or without red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and with and without slurry. The white clover mixtures had significantly higher yields in spring and summer in swards that were previously grazed compared to previously cut swards, when slurry was applied. The percentage of white clover in spring was considerably reduced by previous grazing and this caused the yield response of slurry application to be highest following grazing. A similar effect on the clover content was not found in the...

Productivity and N-leaching in organic dairy grass-arable crop rotations Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Askegaard, M.; Søegaard, K..
Increasing size of organic dairy farms makes grazing of all cropped land inexpedient due to long distance to the milking facilities. We investigated nutrient dynamics and feed production in two dairy crop rotations with differences in proportion of grazing and cutting. One six year crop rotation represents close to the farm buildings (barley undersown with grass-clover - 4 years of grass-clover - spring barley/catch crop) and another represents further away (barley undersown with grass-clover, 2 years of grass-clover -barley/catch crop - maize/catch crop - lupin/catch crop). In each of the crop rotations was made five treatments concerning grazing/cutting strategy and manure application. Results shows that herbage production was high in year 1-4 of...

Outdoor production of slaughter pigs requires an optimized management to mitigate N pollution Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Hermansen, J.E..
In Danish outdoor pig production the sows are usually kept on grassland, while their progeny are transferred at weaning to indoor housing with access to an outdoor concrete pen. It may seem paradoxical that a large part of meat consumed from outdoor systems comes from pigs that during the majority of their life have been prevented from natural behaviour such as rooting, digging and grazing. The explanation is the drawbacks of rearing growers outdoors including huge space demand, high work expenditure, high feed consumption and high environmental costs due to nutrient losses to aquifers and the atmosphere caused by high nutrient load and difficulty maintaining grass cover. However, it may be questioned if pigs reared indoors comply with consumers’...

Root biomass and carbon storage in differently managed multispecies temporary grasslands Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Mortensen, T.; Søegaard, K..
Species-rich grasslands may potentially increase carbon (C) storage in soil and an experiment was established to investigate C storage in highly productive temporary multi-species grasslands. Plots were established with three mixtures: 1) a herb mixture containing salad burnet (Sanguisorba minor L.), fenugreek (Trogonella foenum-gruecum), chicory (Chicorium intybus L.), caraway (Carum carvi L.), birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.), chervil (Anthriscus cerefolium L.), plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.), lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) and melilot (Melilotus officinalis), 2) 50% of the herb mixture and 50% of a white clover (Trifolium repens L.)/perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) mixture, and 3) 5% of the herb mixture and 95% of the white...

Grassland carbon sequestration and emissions following cultivation in a mixed crop rotation Organic Eprints
Acharya, B.S.; Rasmussen, J.; Eriksen, J..
Grasslands are potential carbon sinks to reduce unprecedented increase in atmospheric CO2. Effect of age (1 to 4-yr-old) and management (slurry, grazing multispecies mixture) of a grass phase mixed crop rotation on carbon sequestration and emissions upon cultivation was compared with 17-yr-old grassland and a pea field as reference. Aboveground and root biomass were determined and soils were incubated to study CO2 emissions after soil disturbance. Aboveground biomass was highest in 1-yr-old grassland with slurry application and lowest in 4-yr-old grassland without slurry application. Root biomass was highest in 4-yr-old grassland, but all 1 to 4-yr-old grasslands were in between the pea field (0.81±0.094 g kg-1 soil) and the 17-yr-old grassland (3.17±0.22...

Simulation of residual effects and nitrate leaching after incorporation of different ley types Organic Eprints
Berntsen, J.; Petersen, B.M.; Olesen, J.E.; Eriksen, J.; Søegaard, K..
The FASSET farm model was used to simulate production in an experiment where a grass-clover or a grass ley was either cut or grazed with dairy cows receiving low or high N sup-plements. The six different ley types were ploughed in and followed by three years with spring cereals with undersown catch crops. The original model was extended with a new grass and clover model, which included the capability to simulate rhizodeposition and root growth. The new model predicted the observed annual carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) production satisfactorily. The simulated first year residual effects of a cut grass or grass-clover ley varied between 0 and 34, while the residual effect of a grazed grass or grass-clover ley varied between 71 and 150 fertilizer equivalents...
