Simulation characteristics from eighteen global ocean–sea-ice coupled models are presented with a focus on the mean Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and other related fields in the North Atlantic. These experiments use inter-annually varying atmospheric forcing data sets for the 60-year period from 1948 to 2007 and are performed as contributions to the second phase of the Coordinated Ocean-ice Reference Experiments (CORE-II). The protocol for conducting such CORE-II experiments is summarized. Despite using the same atmospheric forcing, the solutions show significant differences. As most models also differ from available observations, biases in the Labrador Sea region in upper-ocean potential temperature and salinity distributions, mixed...

Variability and seasonality of physical and biological fields at the Great Meteor Tablemount (subtropical NE Atlantic) ArchiMer
Mourino, B; Fernandez, E; Serret, P; Harbour, D; Sinha, B; Pingree, R.
Five oceanographic surveys were conducted at the Great Meteor Tablemount (subtropical NE Atlantic; 30.0 degreesN, 28.5 degreesW) throughout the 1992-1999 period tc, investigate temporal variability in the relationship between the physical structure of the water column associated with the seamount and phytoplankton biomass and/or production rates. Local increases in chlorophyll a, enhanced carbon incorporation rates and changes in phytoplankton species composition were associated with the seamount. These effects were subjected to a large degree of temporal and spatial variability both at seasonal and shorter time scales.

Vertical particle-flux in outer shelf waters of the southern bay-of-biscay in summer 1993 ArchiMer
Fernandez, E; Maranon, E; Cabal, J; Alvarez, F; Anadon, R.
Export of particulate matter out of the euphotic zone was measured in the southern Bay of Biscay in summer 1993 using shallow (50 m) sediment traps deployed for a short period in outer shelf waters. The sedimented material consisted of intact and degraded faecal pellets, diatom frustules, coccolithophorid cells, detached coccoliths and zooplankton remains. Measured vertical fluxes were 173-236 mg C m(-2) day(-1), 18-20 mg N m(-2) day(-1) and 3.8-4.5 mg C m(-2) day(-1), respectively for particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON) and particulate inorganic carbon (PIC). The downward flux of POC represented 24-37% of the estimated primary production. Export of PIC accounted for only 2% of the total carbon flux. A large proportion...

Air-sea CO2 fluxes in a coastal embayment affected by upwelling: physical versus biological control ArchiMer
Alvarez, M; Fernandez, E; Perez, Ff.
Water column pCO(2) and air-sea CO2 fluxes were studied during an 18-month period (May 1994-September 1995) in a coastal embayment affected by upwelling, located in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula (Ria de Vigo and adjacent shelf). Overall, the region acted as a net annual atmospheric CO, sink, with magnitude ranging from 0.54 mgC m(-2) d(-1) in the Ria estuary to 22 mgC m(-2) d(-1) offshore. During moderate upwelling and upwelling relaxation conditions the sampling area was a sink for atmospheric CO2. By contrast, during winter conditions and during intense upwelling the flux reversed towards the atmosphere. The relative influence of physical and biological processes on pCO(2) was evaluated using two different approaches: firstly, statistical analysis...
