Extended and short abstracts for the conference "Dioxin 2014": A feeding experiment was set up on an organic farm where four groups of layers were used with 37 hens in each. Two groups of hens received a supplement of 15 g larvae per hen per day, while two control groups received only compound feed. The duration of the feeding experiment was two month. Adult flies are potential carriers of various microbiological pathogens due to their attraction to animal manure. The common house fly (Musca domestica) place their eggs on the surface of fresh manure and the hatched larvae undergoes three larval stages inside. Whether pathogenic microorganism from the manure may colonize the larva gut and ensure transmission to the adult fly is not known as larvae also nourishes on certain bacteria. In this study we monitored the effect of adding M. domestica fly larvae to poultry manure spiked with different test strains (E. coli, S. In a one week process, manure will be converted to compost and the live larvae will be harvested and used for feeding laying hens. The larvae are expected to have a beneficial effect on the growth performance, intestinal health and on animal behavior in flocks.
