Nature quality in organic farming: A conceptual analysis of considerations and criteria in a European context Organic Eprints
Tybirk, Knud; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Frederiksen, Pia.
Nature quality in relation to farming is a complex field. It involves different traditions and interests, different views of what nature is, and different ways of valuing nature. Furthermore there is a general lack of empirical data on many aspects of nature quality in the farmed landscape. The present paper looks at nature quality from the perspective of organic farming, which has its own values and goals in relation to nature – the "Ecologist View of Nature". This is in contrast to the "Culturist View" characteristic of much conventional agriculture and the "Naturalist View" characteristic of the traditional biological approach to nature quality. This threefold distinction forms a framework for exploration of nature quality criteria in the farmed...

Hvordan udvikler det økologiske jordbrug sig regionalt? Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.

Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.

LOCALISATION AND CONCENTRATION OF ORGANIC FARMING IN THE 1990'S - THE DANISH CASE Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.
This study explores the localisation of organic farms in Denmark for the three years 1994, 1997 and 2001, on a county and parish level. Spatial concentration is found in counties with a high share of milk producers, but also in the counties, which contain the two largest urban centres. General regional specialisation of the agricultural sector in Denmark contributes to the explanation of concentration patterns of organic conversion, but other factors like a regional favourable policy climate and -support also appear to play a role. Major variations in concentration within regions are found, suggesting that local factors play an important role for the explanation of spatial patterns of organic conversion.

Spatial variation in the localization of Danish organic farms Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.
Conversion to organic farming shows a large variation at the county level in Denmark. This is attributed to proximity to urban markets and values, regional specialization of farm types and municipal promotion of organic farming. However, also at the local level there is a substantial variation in the localization of organic farms. This may be related to negative influences of social barriers and positive influences of fiery souls among producers and advisors.

Risgaard, Marie-Louise; Kaltoft, Pernille; Frederiksen, Pia.

Socio-cultural processes behind the differential distribution of organic farming in Denmark - a case study Organic Eprints
Risgaard, Marie-Louise; Frederiksen, Pia; Kaltoft, Pernille.
Conversion to organic farming, along with driving forces and barriers, has been explored intensively during the past decade, while studies on localization and impacts of local socio-cultural processes on conversion to and diffusion of organic farming have been scarce. Concentrations of organic farms in Denmark have been identified at the county level, and moreover there appeared to be large within-county variation in the density of organic farms. The present study explores the local aspects of conversion to organic farming and the factors that may help explain the variations in density and distribution of organic farms within smaller areas. The study is based on nine qualitative interviews with organic farmers from two neighboring areas, referred to as...

Structural development in Danish agriculture and its implications for farmland nature Organic Eprints
Levin, Gregor; Langer, Vibeke; Frederiksen, Pia.
During the last decades, development of Danish agriculture was characterised by concentration of land on fewer and larger farms and consequently increasing farm sizes. On basis of three case studies supplemented by national data we explore relationships between farm size change and farmland nature in terms of field sizes and hedgerow densities. Data point to a significant relationship between farm enlargement and increases in mean field sizes. Furthermore, mean field size is negatively related to densities of hedgerows. For the coming decades, scenarios for Danish agriculture point to a continued increase in farm sizes. We argue for an increased focus on the effects of a continued scale enlargement on farmland nature in terms of changes in field size...

Nature Management and livelihood strategies on Danish organic farms Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.
Pluriactivity in organic farming in Denmark, and its implications for intensity of farming- and nature practises. Societal demands to the farming sector are changing, from solely focussing on foodproduction to an increased interest in the production of environmental and nature values, as well as a socio-economically sustainable countryside. Coincident with this development agricultural restructuring takes place with high speed, implying structural development: fewer and larger farms. Meanwhile some farming households seek alternative pathways, including diversification of activities and use of resources. These pathways sometimes express alternative development choices other than farm intensification. A crucial question is thus, if some of these...

Økologisk jordbrug - struktur, produktion og naturforvaltning Organic Eprints
Risgaard, Marie-Louise; Langer, Vibeke; Frederiksen, Pia.

Collaborative partnerships between organic farmers Organic Eprints
Asai, Masayasu; Langer, Vibeke; Frederiksen, Pia.
A survey of Danish dairy farmers show that - around 70% of all organic dairt farmers collaborate around manure - the main factors for success in collaboration are trust, reliabilty and timely communication -organic exporting farmers are less concerned with distance because the organic network is more dispersed. Development of well functioning collaborative partnerships may increase farm robustness to changing conditions.

Nature Management and livelihood strategies on Danish organic farms Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.
The paper present the first results on a study of landscape elements on Danish organic farms and their management. 346 organic farms representing main landscape and farm types in Denmark and totalling approximately 10% of the organic farming population has been interviewed on the existence and age of hedgerows, ponds and wildlife habitats, as well as permanent grassland managment on the farm. Moreover information on socio-economic aspects has been collected and land use and size of farm has been retrived from registry. Results show that the three landscape elements has to be analysed separately as their relationship to farms characteristics vary. Permanent grassland and hedgerows are related to production parameters like farm type. Farm size is...

Strukturudviklingen i økologisk jordbrug - "is small beautiful?" Organic Eprints
Langer, Vibeke; Frederiksen, Pia.
Kun en enkelt tegnede to ens tegninger.

Diversity as a key concept for organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Langer, Vibeke; Frederiksen, Pia.
Diversity is a key concept of organic agriculture and is intuitively perceived as having positive, but not always explicit, consequences for the internal functioning of the farm as well as for the impact on environment and farmland nature. In two groups of specialised organic farms (arable and dairy) and a group of mixed farms, links between production diversity and diversity at the scales above and below, as well as relations to potential farmland biodiversity, are examined. Results show that diversity in different scales are not consistently correlated, i.e. neither high diversity in farm household on-farm activities, nor diversity in agricultural production are linked to high crop and land use diversity. Furthermore, there are no simple relations...

LIVELIHOOD STRATEGIES ON DANISH ORGANIC FARMS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO FARM BASED RURAL DEVELOPMENT Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.
Household livelihood strategies among Danish organic farmers are identified using combinations of off-farm income levels, time used for farming, and farm size. This is based on interviews carried out in 2002 with 10 % of the Danish organic farmers representing the national distribution of organic farm types as well as major landscape systems. The relationship between these strategies and farm-based rural development is investigated in terms of engagement in other farm-based activities and landscape management, and it is discussed how different strategies may be interpreted and the questions it raises to the further development of the organic farming.

Patterns of resource use on Danish organic farms - aspects of farm based rural development Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.
With changing societal goals for the rural areas, the question what role organic farming may play in rural development arises. Based on interviews with 10% of Danish organic farms, we explore which types of organic farms exist in terms of resources used for agricultural activity, what role do other types of income activities play and how are the different strategies co-existing or complementing eachother. Based on resource use on organic farms by farmer and spouse, less than half of the farms can be characterzed as full-time farms, with part-time farms making up one third and hobby farms 17%. More than half of the organic farms are managed by a farmer with the main income from off-farm work, and half of the farms engage in Other Farm-based Activities...

The development of farm size on danish organic farms - a comment on the conventionalisation debate Organic Eprints
Langer, Vibeke; Frederiksen, Pia; Jensen, Jørgen Dejgaard.
Average farm size is reported to increase on Danish organic farms, giving rise to the question whether one of the perceived measures of ‘conventionalisation’, land concentration, is taking place. The increase may be due to size differences in the farms entering and leaving the organic sector or to size enlargement on existing organic farms. Size enlargement is examined in a cohort of 236 farms which converted to organic farming in 1997 and remained organic in 2004. In this group the largest 5% of farms covered 24% of the area in 1997, increasing to 27% in 2004. Changes in farm size on a total of 302 organic farms show that a majority of farms increased their size, with larger farms being more likely to enlarge than smaller. There are no indications that...
