Dieta e estratégia alimentar de Characidium rachovii (Characiformes, Crenuchidae) em riachos de planície costeira do sul do Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Bastos,Rodrigo F.; Miranda,Stéfanie F.; Garcia,Alexandre M..

Preliminary examination of food web structure of Nicola Lake (Taim Hydrological System, south Brazil) using dual C and N stable isotope analyses Neotropical Ichthyology
Garcia,Alexandre M.; Hoeinghaus,David J.; Vieira,João P.; Winemiller,Kirk O.; Marques,David M. L. Motta; Bemvenuti,Marlise A..
Taim Ecological Reserve is located within the Taim Hydrological System and was created to protect a heterogeneous and productive landscape harboring exceptional biological diversity in southern Brazil. Using stable isotope ratio analyses of carbon (delta13C) and nitrogen (delta15N), we provide a preliminary description of the food web structure, including estimates of production sources supporting fish populations and vertical trophic structure, within a representative lake of this system. A total of 21 organisms (5 macrophytes, 3 mollusks and 13 adult fishes) representing 16 species were collected for isotope analysis. Fishes had delta13C values ranging from -24.30º/oo to -28.31º/oo , showing concordance with the range of values observed for macrophytes...

Diet composition and feeding strategy of the southern pipefish Syngnathus folletti in a Widgeon grass bed of the Patos Lagoon Estuary, RS, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Garcia,Alexandre M.; Geraldi,Ricardo M.; Vieira,João P..
Pipefish species are poorly known representatives of the family Syngnathidae, which have been increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activities. We describe the diet composition and feeding strategy of southern pipefish Syngnathus folletti inhabiting a Widgeon grass (Ruppia maritima L.) bed in the estuarine zone of Patos Lagoon, southern Brazil. We also investigated whether mouth gape affected the size of prey items consumed and based on indirect evidence, we suggest possible pipefish foraging movements within the bed. Individuals were collected from December 1994 to March 1995 in a Ruppia maritima bed located in the Patos Lagoon Estuary during day and night periods. We analyzed the stomach contents of 108 individuals (54 females and 54 males). Both...

Checklist comparison and dominance patterns of the fish fauna at Taim Wetland, South Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Garcia,Alexandre M.; Bemvenuti,Marlise A.; Vieira,João P.; Marques,David M. L. Motta; Burns,Marcelo D. M.; Moresco,Alex; Condini,Mario Vinicius L..
Taim Hydrological System is a unique subtropical wetland in southern Brazil harboring an exceptional biological diversity. In 1978, an ecological reserve was established to protect part of this area from increasing anthropogenic impacts in its surroundings. Fishes have been poorly investigated in this system. Based on a multi-gear sampling study encompassing several years (2001-2005), and on comparisons with previous fish inventories, we provide an up-to-date species list of fishes occurring in the Taim Wetland. In addition, we made the first preliminary description of fish dominance patterns found in the main lakes of the system (Flores, Nicola, Jacaré and Mangueira). Checklist comparison resulted in 62 fish species distributed in 24 families, with...

Diet and food consumption of the pearl cichlid Geophagus brasiliensis (Teleostei: Cichlidae): relationships with gender and sexual maturity Neotropical Ichthyology
Bastos,Rodrigo F.; Condini,Mário V.; Varela Junior,Antonio S.; Garcia,Alexandre M..
Despite the importance of the pearl cichlid Geophagus brasiliensis for the aquarium fish trade worldwide and its wide distribution, many aspects of its biology, such as the relationships between its feeding ecology and reproductive behavior, are not fully understood in natural conditions on its native habitat. In this paper, we investigated its diet focusing on how differences in diet and food consumption are related to differences in gender and sexual maturity. The digestive tract of each individual was dissected and had its content analyzed, whereas each gonad was microscopically analyzed to determine gender (male/female) and sexual maturity (immature/mature). A total of 28 females and 31 males were analyzed. Mature individuals were more common than...

Evidence of habitat fragmentation affecting fish movement between the Patos and Mirim coastal lagoons in southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Burns,Marcelo D. M.; Garcia,Alexandre M.; Vieira,João P.; Bemvenuti,Marlise A.; Marques,David M. L. Motta; Condini,Vinicius.
The communication between the Patos and Mirim lagoon systems occurs via a natural channel called São Gonçalo. In 1977, a dam was built in this channel to prevent entrance of saline waters from Patos Lagoon estuary into the Mirim Lagoon. Our results showed an abrupt discontinuity in salinity and fish species distribution along the study sites. Sites below the dam showed salinity values higher than zero, whereas sites above had zero salinity values across all sampling periods. Marine and estuarine fishes (e.g., mullets Mugil platanus, M. curema, silversides Odontesthes argentinensis, Atherinella brasiliensis, sardine Brevoortia pectinata, and white croaker Micropogonias furnieri) were not captured above the dam. If these juvenile fishes could enter the Mirim...

Diet and feeding strategy of the dusky grouper Mycteroperca marginata (Actinopterygii: Epinephelidae) in a man-made rocky habitat in southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Condini,Mario V.; Seyboth,Elisa; Vieira,João P.; Garcia,Alexandre M..
The dusky grouper (Mycteroperca marginata) is a marine species usually associated with rocky bottoms and reefs. The present work investigated the diet and feeding strategy of a dusky grouper population inhabiting a 4.5 km long pair of rocky jetties located in the mouth of Patos Lagoon estuary. No prior research has been conducted in such man-made habitat and the current study provides a basis for comparative studies on the diet of the dusky grouper populations inhabiting natural vs. man-made rocky habitats. Similarly with previous studies on natural substrates, crabs and fishes were the main food categories consumed (%IRI = 85.1 and %IRI = 12.6, respectively), whereas shrimps and mollusks had lower importance in the diet (%IRI = 1.9 and 0.4, respectively)....

Carbon primary sources and estuarine habitat use by two congeneric ariid catfishes in a subtropical coastal lagoon Rev. Bras. Zool.
Pereyra,Paula E.R.; Mont'Alverne,Renata; Garcia,Alexandre M..
ABSTRACT Although ariid catfishe species are known to use coastal systems during some stages of their life cycles, the energetic contribution of estuarine resources and habitat use by many species in this family are still unclear. We used stable isotope analyses to estimate the assimilation of primary carbon sources and to infer the use of estuarine and freshwater habitats by two ariid catfishes Genidens barbus (Lacepède, 1803) and Genidens genidens (Cuvier, 1829). An isotopic mixing model revealed that juveniles of both catfish species consume considerable amounts of estuarine-produced carbon sources (G. barbus: 54-87% and G. genidens: 36-84%). However, G. genidens adults rely more on freshwater-derived carbon sources (31-77%) than on estuarine sources...

First records of introduced carps (Teleostei, Cyprinidae) in the natural habitats of Mirim and Patos Lagoon estuary, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Zoologia
Garcia,Alexandre M.; Loebmann,Daniel; Vieira,João P.; Bemvenuti,Marlise A..
This is the first record in the wild of occurrence of four carp species (bighead Aristichthys nobilis (Richardson, 1845), common Cyprinus carpio carpio Linnaeus, 1758, silver Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Valenciennes, 1844), and grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idellus (Valenciennes, 1844)) in the Mirim Lagoon and Patos Lagoon estuary. Our findings reinforce the hypothesis that during periods of elevated rainfall and freshwater discharge, exotic species could be easily transported from overflowed ponds and lakes into the Mirim-Patos Lagoon and then estuarine area.

Influência da salinidade no crescimento de juvenis de Jenynsia multidentata Jenyns (Pisces) Zoologia
Mai,Ana C. G.; Garcia,Alexandre M.; Vieira,João P..
