The pomacentrid Stegastes planifrons is one of the most conspicuous inhabitants of the coral reefs and constitutes an important agent of natural coral mortality. These fishes kill coral directly by removing coral polyps for opening up a space for its algal turfs, which are their main food. The population density, territory and algal turfs areas of Stegastes planifrons were assessed at Chengue and Gayraca bays in Tayrona Natural Park, as a contribution to understand natural processes involved in the coral reef deterioration. During August to November 1999, belt transects (20 x 2 m) were evaluated at four reef habitat types: multispecific coral assemblages dominated by (1) Colpophyllia natans (COLP) or (2) Montastraea spp. (MONT); and monospecific coral... |

Malpelo, a small rocky offshore island that supports one of the few coral populations in the eastern Pacific, was visited on June 1-5, 1999 with the purpose of evaluating the status of the coral communities. Using rapid visual methods, the cover of major categories of sessile organisms and the health condition of the coral species were assessed at 8 stations between 11 and 31 m depth. “El Arrecife”, which is the largest coral formation in Malpelo, seems to have suffered a 20% reduction of the live coral cover since 1972 when a mean value of 65% was recorded. This decline, which probably was originated by the 1982-83 strong bleaching event that affected widely the American Pacific, is reflected also by the present levels of recent coral mortality: mean of... |

Based on data recorded in 1994 and 1995 during a basile study carried out at four western Cribbean atolls (Albuquerque, Courtown, Roncador and Serrana) of the San Andrés and Providencia archipelago, the incidence of hard coral predation by fishes and its relation witrh tthe abundance of the parrofishes Sparisoma viride and Scarus vetula was analyzed. Among affected corals, Montastraea annularis and M. faveolata showed the highest inciednce of fish bites (29.5% and 18.7% respectively). There were no significant differences between the atolls on the incidence of coral predation by fishes (Kruskall-Wallis, p=0.07). When comparing between geomorphologic units the lagoon showed the highest level of predation (14.3%), and also the largest populations of S.... |

The yellowcheek wrasse Haliocheres cyanocephalus (Bloch) is registred by the first time for the Colombian Caribbean. In spite of extensive diving in most reef areas of Colombia since 1980, H. cyanocephalus was observed only in four occasions at the Tayrona Natural Park, the Urabá area, and San Andrés islands. The fish is known to occur in deep waters but in Colombia it was found only in shallow (7-15 m in depth)reef environments. Eight species of the genus Halichoeres are now known from the Colombian Caribbean. |

As a contribution to understanding the potential impact of macroalgae on coral communities, this work evaluated the presence and dynamics of algae-coral interactions in two bays of the Santa Marta region. Two stations were sampled in Chengue Bay, located within the Tayrona Natural Park, and two other in the Santa Marta Bay which is adjacent to the city of Santa Marta. Three permanent 10 m belt transects were settled at each station, at which a total of 270 coral colonies were monitored monthly. Algae - coral interactions were recorded from each colony based on five categories defined by the distance between the coral tissue and the algal mat. A total of 1956 interactions were recorded, 67% of which corresponded to direct contacts, 22% to indirect contacts,... |

To assess the status of coral formations dominated by Acropora palmata (APF) and A. cervicornis (ACF) in the Tayrona National Natural Park (TNNP), Colombian Contribución No. 855 del Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras – INVEMAR Caribbean, a study was conducted at the bays of Chengue, Gayraca, Nenguange and Cinto between May- December 2001. The distribution and extension of the formations in the study area were evaluated by swimming along the coast and using draft maps, a GPS and a calibrated flow-meter, and their living cover were estimated in quadrat-belt transects (1x10 m). Atotal of 29 APF (119320 m2) and 12 ACF (21760 m2) were assessed. Almost all the APF exhibited living colonies of A. palmata, but the mean cover by this species reached... |
