Biofuel Growth: Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions Impacts from Changes in Forest Carbon Stocks AgEcon
Golub, Alla A.; Hertel, Thomas W.; Rose, Steven K.; Sohngen, Brent.
There is significant policy interest in liquid biofuels with appealing prospects for energy security, farm security, poverty alleviation, and climate change. Large-scale commercial biofuel production could have far reaching implications for regional and global markets – particularly those related to energy and land use. As such, large-scale biofuels growth is likely to have significant impacts on global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This paper utilizes a CGE model with explicit biofuel, land, and energy markets. The model is able to estimate the effects on the broad range of input and output markets potentially affected globally by biofuels policies. One of the most controversial issues within the biofuels debate is potential indirect changes in land use...

GHG Mitigation Policies in Livestock Sectors: Competitiveness, Emission Leakage and Food Security AgEcon
Golub, Alla A.; Henderson, Benjamin B.; Hertel, Thomas W..
Recent research on livestock’s role in climate change has raised awareness about contribution that livestock climate policies can make to global mitigation efforts, and has increased the likelihood that mitigation policies will eventually be imposed on the sector. This study investigates effects of GHG mitigation policies on livestock sectors emissions and production by regional sector under a range of global mitigation polices that are broadly aligned with the different responsibilities of developed and developing countries under the UNFCCC. The study also examines emission leakage effects, impacts on food security in developing countries, and the implications of large informal livestock sectors in regions such as Sub Saharan Africa.

DOES RURAL JOB GROWTH LEAD THE ECONOMY OUT OF RECESSION? AgEcon
Golub, Alla A.; Henderson, Jason R.; Foster, Kenneth A..
This paper explores the dynamics of rural and non-rural job growth to investigate if job growth starts in rural places, making it one of the leading indicators of economic growth. Empirical results provide mixed evidence. The mixed results of the Granger non-causality tests could be sensitive to the non-rural area definition. The relationship between rural job growth and non-rural job growth is not restricted to post-recession periods. Analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data suggests the spillover effects of non-rural growth are larger than the spillover effect of rural growth on non-rural areas. But this positive response of rural growth disappears over time and turns sharply negative. In the long run, “"backwash”" effects outweigh “"spread”" effects.

The Economy-wide Greenhouse Gas Impacts of the Biofuels Boom (or Bust) AgEcon
Birur, Dileep K.; Golub, Alla A.; Hertel, Thomas W.; Rose, Steven K..
Several studies in the recent past have offered a contrasting and wide range of perspectives on economic and environmental implications of biofuels. In this study we develop a comprehensive and consistent framework for analyzing the global economic interactions and the direct and indirect impacts of biofuels production on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We utilize a global Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model which consists of interaction of energy commodities with explicit biofuels and their by-product sectors, land endowment classified by agro-ecological zones, and emission of four major GHGs - carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, fluorinated gases from agricultural and economic activities, including emissions associated with biofuel feedstock,...

Global interactions between bioenergy and climate policies AgEcon
Golub, Alla A.; Hertel, Thomas W.; Rose, Steven K.; Sohngen, Brent.
Over the past few years, interest in bioenergy has boomed with higher oil prices and concerns about energy security, farm incomes, and mitigation of climate change. In the same time, there is significant interest in international agricultural and forestry based greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation. However, bioenergy and climate policies are being formulated largely independent of one another. Understanding the interaction between these potentially competing policy objectives is valuable for identifying possible constraints that one policy might be placing on the other, as well as potential complementarities. Using a general equilibrium framework, this study assesses the effects of bioenergy expansion on sectoral, regional and global GHG emissions mitigation...

Comparison of Grocery Purchase Patterns of Diet Soda Buyers to Those of Regular Soda Buyers AgEcon
James, Binkley; Golub, Alla A..
The ultimate effect of regular and diet carbonated soft drinks on energy intakes depends on possible relations with other dietary components. With this motivation, this study compared grocery purchase patterns of regular and diet soft drink consumers using a large sample of US single person households. We tested for differences in food spending shares allocated to 43 food categories chosen mainly for their desirable/undesirable nutritional properties. We also investigated whether differences in purchased quantity of diet soft drinks are associated with differences in purchases of other food categories. We found a large number of significant differences, virtually all showing that more diet soda prone consumers make better nutrition choices, particularly...

Purchasing Patterns for Nutritional-Enhanced Foods: The Case of Calcium enhanced Orange Juice AgEcon
Golub, Alla A.; Binkley, James K.; Denbaly, Mark.
In recent times there has been a growing awareness of the importance of nutrition and the nutritional aspects of various foods. Products are now marketed by emphasizing their nutritional properties, and new products are often designed to serve a particular nutritional purpose. Nutrition concern has become an important force in successfully shaping food marketing. Nevertheless, obesity and other nutrition-related health problems have not abated, and in fact have worsened. A possible explanation for these disparate trends is that a subset of nutritionally-concerned consumers– - consumers in less need of improved nutrition- is responsible for the majority of healthy food purchases, with most others ignoring the nutritional message. Thus, an important...

A REEXAMINATION OF THE PROFITABILITY OF PRICE FIXING USING STOCK PRICE MOVEMENT: HAS NEW ANTITRUST LEGISLATION BEEN A MORE EFFECTIVE DETERRENT OF PRICE FIXING? AgEcon
Detre, Joshua D.; Golub, Alla A..
The Department of Justice (DOJ) antitrust penalties have become harsher for violating individuals and firms, and the criminal enforcement of cases has become increasingly important during the last 20 years. In this study we investigate whether these changes in antitrust law led to improved effectiveness of antitrust actions with respect to price-fixing over 1981-2001. We measure effectiveness by suppressed stock market values of offending firms after successful Section 1 of the Sherman Act indictment, by duration of the deterrent effect and by the rate of recidivism. We use effectiveness of antitrust enforcement documented by Bosch and Eckard (1991) and Thompson and Kaserman (2001) for 1962-80 as a basis for comparison. Our results show that the changes in...

IMPACT OF US AND EUROPEAN BIOFUEL POLICIES ON FOREST CARBON AgEcon
Kim, Yoon Hyung; Sohngen, Brent; Golub, Alla A.; Hertel, Thomas W.; Rose, Steven K..
This paper develops a dynamic, regional analysis of the effects of US and European biofuel mandates on land use, forestry stocks, and carbon emissions. The results suggest that these mandates may cause an additional 23-26 million hectares of forestland losses globally, but additional carbon emissions of 1.2 – 1.6 billion t CO2. The estimates are found to be sensitive to the elasticity parameter on the land supply function in the model, with the higher elasticity estimates associated with larger carbon losses. The regional analysis turns out to be quite important, because some regions end up gaining forestland and increasing carbon stocks. The regional and dynamic effects have been missed by most other noteworthy analyses of the induced land use effects...

Determinants of household choice of breakfast cereals: healthy or unhealthy? AgEcon
Golub, Alla A.; Binkley, James K..
We studied consumer demand for more and less healthy breakfast cereals. Using ACNielsen Homescan database and USDA food nutrition data, we developed three cereal nutrition indexes for each household in the data. In addition to the standard demographic characteristics of households and prices, we included variables representing differences between private labels and national brands. We found that the structure of the industry, through its effect on the product mix produced, affects consumer choice of nutritious foods. Some households buy fewer healthy cereals simply through reluctance to trust private labels. Among all factors expected to influence consumer purchases, the prices appear to have the strongest effect on the healthiness of the choice of...

HOUSEHOLD FOOD CHOICE IN FOUR FOOD CATEGORIES: HEALTHY OR UNHEALTHY? AgEcon
Binkley, James K.; Golub, Alla A..
The interest of this study is the tradeoff between nutrition and taste in consumer food choice. We examine choice between more and less healthy versions of particular foods within four important grocery categories: breakfast cereal, milk, bread, and soft drinks. Within a category, products do not greatly differ in terms of cost and convenience, and nutritional differences are easily determined. Consumers are less likely to choose unhealthy foods due to cost or convenience advantages, or through ignorance. This makes the choice between taste and nutrition more apparent. We use annual expenditure data reported by a large sample of households participating in the AC Nielsen Homescan data system. For each of the food categories we develop a measure of...

THE EFFECTS OF STARLINK CORN FOOD SAFETY EVENTS ON RETURNS AND RISK OF AGRIBUSINESS FIRMS AgEcon
Golub, Alla A.; Wilson, Christine A.; Featherstone, Allen M..
Using event study methodology, we examine the effects of three Starlink corn food safety events on the risk and returns of directly involved agribusiness firms and the diffusion effects on other firms in the industry. We test the hypothesis that Starlink food safety events do not have an impact on the magnitude and volatility of the returns and the nondiversifiable risk of the firms. Based on the results of this study, we conclude that Wall Street is not sensitive to the Starlink corn food safety events.

Projecting Supply and Demand for Land in the Long Run AgEcon
Golub, Alla A.; Hertel, Thomas W.; Sohngen, Brent.
The goal of this work is to investigate land-use change at the global scale over the long run – particularly in the context of analyzing the fundamental drivers behind land-use related GHG emissions. For this purpose, we identify the most important drivers of supply and demand for land. On the demand side, we begin with a dynamic general equilibrium (GE) model that predicts economic growth in each region of the world, based on exogenous projections of population, skilled and unskilled labor and technical change. Economy-wide growth is, in turn, translated into consumer demand for specific products using an econometrically estimated, international cross-section, demand system that permits us to predict the pattern of future consumer demands across the...
