Somatic, Biochemical and Hepatic Alterations in Wild Type Mice Chronically Fed High Fat Diet International Journal of Morphology
Neves,Renata Heisler; Barros Alencar,Alba Cristina Miranda de; Aguila,Marcia Barbosa; Mandarim-de-Lacerda,Carlos Alberto; Machado-Silva,José Roberto; Gomes,Delir Corrêa.
This study evaluated whether a high fat diet (HFC group) induces overweight, hepatic steatosis and plasma lipoproteins level alteration compared to standard chow diet (SC group). Female mice were submitted to each diet over 6 months. Body mass and food intake were evaluated weekly throughout the experiment. Total cholesterol, TG, LDL-c, HDL-c and VLDL-c were analyzed. Mice were sacrificed to remove liver, spleen, heart and intestine. The volume of the organs was determined according to the submersion method. Fixed livers were embedded in paraffin and stained with hematoxylin and eosin and Masson's trichrome. The analysis used a video microscope system and a test-system with 42 test-points. The volume density was estimated for hepatocytes, steatosis and...

A survey of nematode species parasitizing Brazilian birds is presented, with enough data to provide their specific identification. The first section refers to the survey of the species, related to 17 superfamilies, 23 families, 75 genera and 257 species that are illustrated and measurement tables are given. The second section is concerned to the catalogue of host birds which includes 54 families. 361 species. and their respective parasite nematodes. The identification of these helminths is achieved by means of keys to the superfamilies. families and genera. Specific determination is induced through the figures and tables as above mentioned.

Nematodes from opossums and rodents captured in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil were studied. From the opossums Didelphis aurita Weid-Neuweid, 1826 and Philander opossum (Linnaeus, 1758) the following nematode species were recovered: Viannaia hamata Travassos, 1914, Aspidodera raillieti Travassos, 1913, Cruzia tentaculata (Rudolphi, 1819), Travassos, 1917, Turgida turgida (Rudolphi, 1819) Travassos, 1919, Gongylonemoides marsupialis (Vaz & Pereira, 1934) Freitas & Lent, 1937, Viannaia viannai Travassos, 1914, Spirura guianensis (Ortlepp, 1924) Chitwood, 1938 and from the rodents Akodon cursor (Winger, 1887), Nectomys squamipes (Brants, 1827), Oligoryzomys eliurus (Wagner, 1845) and Oryzomys intermedius...

Nematóides do Brasil. Parte III: nematóides de répteis Zoologia
Vicente,Joaquim Júlio; Rodrigues,Henrique de Oliveira; Gomes,Delir Corrêa; Pinto,Roberto Magalhães.
A survey of nematode species parasizing Brazilian reptiles is presented, with data enough to provide their specific identification. The first section refers to the catalogation of the species, related to 127 superfamilies, 23 families, 55 genera and 121 species that are figured and included in measurement tables. The second section is concerned to the catalogue of host reptiles, with 16 families, and 90 species and their respective parasite nematodes. The identification of these helminths is achieved by means of keys to the superfamilies, families and genera. Specific determination is induced through the figures and tables as above mentioned.

Helminths of the guinea pig, Cavia porcellus (Linnaeus), in Brazil Zoologia
Pinto,Roberto Magalhães; Gomes,Delir Corrêa; Muniz-Pereira,Luís C.; Noronha,Dely.
Worm burdens were evaluated and compared in two groups of the guinea pig, Cavia poreellus (Linnaeus, 1758): animals of the first group were conventionally maintained in an institutional animal house and those of the second group were openly kept in pet shops in Brazil. Animals from both sources were infected only with the nematode Paraspidodera uncinata (Rudolphi, 1819) Travassos, 1914 (10% of prevalence in guinea pigs from lhe institutional facility and 40% in those animals from the pet shop). Other helminth samples recovered from Brazilian guinea pigs during 52 years and that are deposited in the Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (CHIOC) were also analyzed. Paraspidodera uncinata and the cestode Monoecocestus parcitesticulatus...

Helminths of rabbits (Lagomorpha, Leporidae) deposited in the Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute Zoologia
Pinto,Roberto Magalhães; Gomes,Delir Corrêa; Menezes,Rodrigo Caldas; Gomes,Cláudia Torres; Noronha,Dely.
Helminth samples (n = 35) recovered from Oryctolagus cuniculus (Linnaeus, 1758) Lilljeborg, 1873 (3) and from another rabbit species, Sylvilagus brasiliensis (Linnaeus, 1758) Thomas, 1901 (32), from August 1909 to February 1948 and that are deposited in the Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute were analyzed. The studied samples were represented by the cysticercus of the cestode Taenia pisiformis (Bloch, 1780) and by the nematodes Passalurus ambiguus (Rudolphi, 1819), Vianella fariasi (Travassos, 1915), Longistriata perfida Travassos, 1943, Trichostrongylus retortaeformis (Zeder, 1800). The scope of the present investigation is to survey the parasites infecting these hosts, commonly used as laboratory animal models in scientific...

Barros,Luciano Antunes; Arruda,Vanessa Santos de; Gomes,Delir Corrêa; Pinto,Roberto Magalhães.
The first case of a natural avian infection caused by the digenetic trematode Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa Ransom, 1920 in Brazil, is reported from the ardeid bird Ardea cocoi Linnaeus, 1766. This represents a new host record and data on clinical and pathological findings are also reported.
