• Conducted within the AMBIO project, this work deals with coral reef fish communities and associated habitats, in the New Caledonian lagoons. It relies on remote unbaited underwater video observations, using the STAVIRO rotating technique. • The study takes place in the Pouebo area, part of the New Caledonian World Heritage site, and encompassing three no-take marine reserves enclosed within a Locally Managed Area (LMA). • The sampling design covers the entire area, and was stratified according to reef geomorphology and protection status. 86 stations were validated within 4 days. They were analyzed to characterize the habitat surrounding each station, and fish communities, based on a species list that includes fished species, emblematic species and...

Le lagon, un patrimoine naturel et un espace de loisirs ArchiMer
Gonson, Charles; Ferraris, Jocelyne; Pelletier, Dominique; Jollit, Isabelle.
With the worldwide growing of human populations in coastal areas, recreational activities are increasing and diversifying. New Caledonia is surrounded by a large lagoon that provides a shelter for these popular activities. Although most of the lagoon areas are managed through well-established Marine Protected Areas (MPA) and 80% of its surface is a World Heritage property, these uses result in accrued and increasing pressures on the coastal environment. This paper provides an overview of the research projects developed since 2000 to better understand and assess recreational uses in the New Caledonian lagoon. Most of these projects were conducted in collaboration with MPA, environmental managers and with stakeholders.

Gonson, Charles.
Coastal areas are complex socio-ecosystem where ecological, human and decisional compounds show multiple and reciprocal relationships. Because of the growth of population and tourism sector, coastal areas are permanently threatened through increase of recreational uses and diversification of related activities. To better understand coastal areas functioning, it is necessary to take into account uses and their management. Monitoring data over a ten years period revealed that recreational uses greatly increased especially within Marine Protecting Areas (MPA), during week-end days and warm season resulting to higher and more frequent frequentation peaks. While, practices within MPA are managed to decrease impacts, pressures associated with recreational uses...

Guide d’utilisation des outils PAMPA. Version 2 ArchiMer
Pelletier, Dominique; Bissery, Claire; Gonson, Charles.
The aim of the PAMPA project (Indicators of Marine Protected Areas performance for managing coastal ecosystems, resources and their uses) was to develop tools and methodologies for assessing MPA performance. Most of these tools are made freely available. This guide contains the information needed to understand and utilize the PAMPA methodologies, and interpret their outcomes. It can be used for monitoring-based assessments from either ecological data or use-related data, provided that these data are formatted according to the requested entry format. The "Biodiversity and resource" platform is very flexible and enables calculating a large variety of indicators at different spatial scale, and for different sets of taxa The "Uses" platform is to our knowledge...

Social carrying capacity assessment from questionnaire and counts survey: Insights for recreational settings management in coastal areas ArchiMer
Gonson, Charles; Pelletier, Dominique; Alban, Frederique.
Because of demographic and tourism increase, coastal areas are facing higher numbers of recreational users. Together with other factors (environmental quality, protection status), the level of use affects the spatial distribution of users. This level also affects the quality of user experience, because beyond a certain level, the number of users results in decreased user satisfaction; this is the social carrying capacity (SCC), which depends on user and site characteristics. This study assessed the SCC in a popular coastal area and examined how it influences the spatial distribution of users. Boat and visitor counts as well as data from a questionnaire-based survey were analyzed to assess i) crowding perception, ii) factors affecting the disturbance...

Decadal increase in the number of recreational users is concentrated in no-take marine reserves ArchiMer
Gonson, Charles; Pelletier, Dominique; Gamp, Elodie; Preuss, Bastien; Jollit, Isabelle; Ferraris, Jocelyne.
In coastal areas, demographic increase is likely to result in greater numbers of recreational users, with potential consequences on marine biodiversity. These effects may also occur within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), which are popular with recreational users. Our analysis builds on data collected over a ten-year period during three year-round surveys to appraise changes in recreational boating activities in coral ecosystems. Results show that the number of boaters has greatly increased, particularly so within MPAs during weekends and the warm season, when peaks in boat numbers have become more frequent. We also observed that the number of anchored boats has increased over the period. These changes may be resulting in biophysical impacts that could be...

Evaluation de l’état de santé des récifs par stations vidéo rotatives STAVIRO : Bourail, Zone Côtière Ouest, Campagne 2012. ArchiMer
Roman, William; Pelletier, Dominique; Powell, Abigail; Bockel, Thomas; Gonson, Charles; Mallet, Delphine.
This work deals with fish communities and associated habitats, in the context of New Caledonian coral reef ecosystems. It was conducted within the AMBIO project. The study relies on remote unbaited underwater video observations, using the STAVIRO rotating technique. The study takes place in the Bourail area, an area (Western Coastal Area) part of the World Heritage site “New Caledonian lagoons”. It encompasses two Marine Protected Areas, Poé and the Ile Verte. The sampling design covers the entire area, and was stratified according to reef geomorphology and protection status. 150 stations were validated within 6 days (40hrs spent at sea). They were analyzed to characterize the habitat surrounding each station, and fish communities, based on a species list...

This work deals with fish communities and associated habitats, in the context of New Caledonian coral reef ecosystems. It was conducted within the AMBIO project. The study relies on remote underwater video observations, using the STAVIRO rotating technique. The study takes place in the Hienghene area, an area (Eastern Coastal Area) part of the World Heritage site “New Caledonian lagoons”. It encompasses two Marine Protected Areas, Do Himenand Yeega. The sampling design covers the entire area, and was stratified according to reef geomorphology and protection status. 105 stations were validated within 4,5 days. They were analyzed to characterize the habitat surrounding each station, and fish communities, based on a species list that includes fished species,...

Influence of settings management and protection status on recreational uses and pressures in marine protected areas ArchiMer
Gonson, Charles; Pelletier, Dominique; Alban, Frederique; Giraud-carrier, Charlotte; Ferraris, Jocelyne.
Coastal populations and tourism are growing worldwide. Consequently outdoor recreational activity is increasing and diversifying. While Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are valuable for mitigating anthropogenic impacts, recreational uses are rarely monitored and studied, resulting in a lack of knowledge on users' practices, motivation and impacts. Based on boat counts and interview data collected in New Caledonia, we i) explored factors affecting user practices and motivations, ii) constructed fine-scale pressure indices covering activities and associated behaviors, and iii) assessed the relationships between user practices and site selection. User practices were found to depend on protection status, boat type and user characteristics. Pressure indices were...
