First fossil insectivores from Flores Naturalis

The hominid bearing strata from the Liang Bua cave on Flores have yielded a large amount of microvertebrate remains. Among these are three mandibles of shrews, the first record of fossil insectivores from the island. The fossils, representing two different species, are not referable to any of the known Recent shrews from Flores, and are probably part of the extinct insular fauna. Since mandibles alone do not offer sufficient characters to allow even a generic classification, they are published in open nomenclature as Crocidura or Suncus sp. A, and sp. B. Insectivores (Lipotyphla, Mammalia) from the Ramblian of the Daroca-Calamocha area Naturalis

The insectivore assemblages from the Ramblian stratotype near Calamocha (Spain) are described, as well as those from San Roque 4A and 4B, two Ramblian localities near the Aragonian stratotype. Two new species are described, the erinaceid Galerix remmerti, and the shrew Clapasorex alvarezae. Both the percentages and the diversity of insectivores are higher in the Lower Ramblian, suggesting more humid conditions in zone Z than in zone A. This is in contradiction with the palaeoenvironmental reconstructions based on rodents. The Middle Aragonian (Middle Miocene) Micromammals from La Retama (Intermediate Depression, Tagus Basin) Province of Cuenca, Spain Naturalis

The micromammal fauna from the Middle Miocene (Middle Aragonian) of La Retama, eastern central Spain, is described. It is a relatively poor rodent fauna composed by ten species only, associated to a highly diverse bat fauna, which includes five genera. The insectivores are represented by two species. This fossil assemblage has been correlated to zone Db (MN 5). The palaeoenvironmental reconstruction based on micromammals indicates open and dry conditions for this locality. Petauristidae and Sciuridae (Mammalia, Rodentia) from Tegelen, Zuurland, and the Maasvlakte (the Netherlands) Naturalis

The number of known sciurid and petauristid fossils from The Netherlands is nearly doubled with the description of material from the Zuurland boreholes, the Maasvlakte, and the Tegelen claypit. The material from Tegelen is assigned to a new species of flying squirrel, Hylopetes debruijni nov. sp. One molar from the late Early Pleistocene of the Zuurland borehole is assigned to Sciurus cf. S. vulgaris. The remaining finds from the Tiglian of the Zuurland boreholes, as well as the single molar from the Maasvlakte, are all assigned to Spermophilus primigenius; this name is preferred over the suggestive use of names of recent ground squirrels for fossil material. Gliridae (Rodentia, Mammalia) from the Upper Pliocene of Tegelen (province of Limburg, The Netherlands) Naturalis

Two species of dormouse have been found in the Upper Pliocene clays of Tegelen, Muscardinus pliocaenicus and Glirulus pusillus. The latter is the first record of this genus in The Netherlands. Muscardinus pliocaenicus shows derived characteristics and is close to the Recent hazelmouse M. avellanarius. The record of Glirulus pusillus is one of the last in Europe. Like the flying squirrel Hylopetes debruijni, also known from Tegelen, G. pussilus ranks among a group of Pliocene animals with its living relatives in Asia. Thus, there is an analogy with the Tertiary flora, which also has relicts in the same area.

Reappearance of Galerix (Erinaceomorpha, Mammalia) at the Middle to Late Miocene transition in South Germany: biostratigraphic and palaeoecologic implications Naturalis

The presence of Galerix molars in the South German fossil locality Hammerschmiede 3 is interpreted as evidence for a reimmigration of West European origin into the North Alpine Foreland Basin at the transition of the Middle to Late Miocene. The brief re-appearence of Galerix in southern Germany can be used as a biostratigraphic marker that allows promising correlations between local biostratigraphic subdivisions from Spain and Germany, suggesting that, contrary to previous thought, the Hammerschmiede locality may antedate the hipparionine horses’ appearance event. Introduction In their report of a meeting at Reisensburg, the RCMNS working group on fossil mammals presented ranges of Neogene mammal genera (De Bruijn et al, 1992). However, no erinaceid, talpid or shrew can be found in the tables. The working group concluded (p. 70); "The omission of all the insectivores is regretted, but the participants of the Reisensburg meeting consider this order insufficiently known at this moment." The Cerro de los Batallones (Los Batallones Butte) is located in the central-northern area of the Madrid Basin, central Spain. Nine vertebrates localities containing a large variety of mammals of Upper Vallesian Age (Late Miocene) have been found associated with the sediments forming the butte. From bottom to top, these sediments consist of magnesian lutite beds (Unit I), paleosols formed of sepiolite and opal (Unit II), and siliclastic, marlstone and carbonate beds (Unit III). Type specimens of recent and fossil Testudines and Crocodylia in the collections of the Netherlands Centre for Biodiversity Naturalis, Leiden, the Netherlands Naturalis

The Working-group on Insectivores from the Neogene of Eurasia (WINE) recently published an overview of the fossil record of insectivores from various European countries. The data thus gathered gives a good impression of the Neogene fossil record of this group. Although most localities are known from Spain, the Central European record has been studied in more detail. The lowermost and late Miocene are as yet relatively poorly documented, particularly in Central Europe. Throughout the Neogene the Central European record is geographically biased, most of our knowledge for a particular timeframe coming from one particular area. Insectivore faunas from the Lower Miocene of Anatolia - Part 8: Stratigraphy, palaeoecology, palaeobiogeography Naturalis

This article deals with biostratigraphy, palaeoecology and biogeography of the Late Oligocene/Early Miocene insectivore faunas from Anatolia. With the exception of the much younger fauna from Keseköy, all faunas contain the same insectivore species. Keseköy contains the same genera, but mostly different species. It has been suggested that insectivores are of limited stratigraphical use due to the longevity of the taxa. This seems to hold true for the Early Miocene faunas from Anatolia. Changes in the composition of the insectivore faunas are used to infer environmental changes. A rise in the abundance of insectivores near the MP 30/MN 1 transition is believed to be indicative of a climatic amelioration. The dominance of Theratiskos in Harami and Keseköy...
