The six products, Armicarb, Vitisan, lime sulphur, Caso, Calce Fiocco and Ulmasud were tested for their ability to control downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) on grapevine (Vitis vinifera) in order to find effective alternatives to copper, a heavy metal that is commonly used as a fungicide in organic viticulture. Each product was applied to potted grapevines at i) 40°h (degree hours) and ii) 80°h after inoculation (ai) of the pathogen. These so-called stop-sprays were tested on plants that received two different P. viticola inoculum rates. The formulated potassium bicarbonate product Armicarb and lime sulphur reduced disease incidence and severity similar to or better than the copper hydroxide treatment. Armicarb and lime sulphur reduced disease incidence... |

White lupin (Lupinus albus L.) is a promising leguminous crop. Europe is fully dependent on protein and nitrogen fertilizer imports. This has tremendous negative effects both in Europe and the producing countries, such as loss of terrestrial biodiversity, pollution of freshwater, increase of greenhouse gases and soil acidification. Diverse crop-rotations with a substantial amount of pulses are a proven solution. The protein composition and yield potential of white lupin suggest that it could become the ‘Soy of the North’. Currently, the seed-borne pathogen Colletotrichum lupini is substantially impeding the cultivation of white lupin in Central Europe. We developed a DNA-based diagnostic test to identify and quantify the fungal pathogen in plants and... |

Plant-associated microbial communities play a crucial role for the expression of various plant traits including disease resistance. Increasing evidence suggests that host genotype influences the composition and function of certain microbial key groups, which, in turn, effects how the plant reacts to environmental stresses. Several studies indicate that modern plant breeding may have selected against plant traits essential for hosting and supporting beneficial microbes. However, they also highlight the presence of an exploitable genetic base for the regulation of the rhizosphere microbiota. We illustrate the concept of breeding for microbial symbioses with pea (Pisum sativum L.). Firstly, genotypic variation for the efficiency of a mycorrhizal symbiosis is... |

The Tansley review by Ryan & Graham (2018) provided a welcome critical perspective on the role of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in large‐scale industrial agriculture, with a focus on cereals (wheat, Triticum aestivum). They conclude that there is little evidence that farmers should consider the abundance or diversity of AM fungi when managing crops. We welcome many of the points made in the paper, as they give an opportunity for self‐reflection, considering that the importance of AM fungi in agroecosystems is often taken for granted. However, we suggest that it is too early to draw the overall conclusion that the management of AM fungi by farmers is currently not warranted. We offer the following points to contribute to the discussion. The first... |

Pea (Pisum sativum L.) belongs to the legume family (Fabaceae). Legumes form mutualistic symbiosis with nitrogen fixing rhizobacteria and, thereby, are able to improve soil fertility. Legume crops are important protein source for food and feed and contribute to the nitrogen demand of succeeding crops. Despite their importance, cultivation of cool-season legumes in temperate zones remains below expectations due to low and unstable yields. Soil fatigue is caused by a complex of different soil-borne pathogens and thought to be the main reason for yield losses, especially in pea. Plants have the ability to actively shape the community of root associated microbes through root exudations. Evidence is growing that there is considerable genetic variation for plant... |
