Analysis of Production Efficiency of Mexican Coffee-Producing Districts AgEcon
Cardenas, Gabriela; Vedenov, Dmitry V.; Houston, Jack E..
Despite the decline of coffee prices during the 1990s, coffee production remains a main economic activity for producers in Southeastern Mexico. This paper analyzes the coffee production system for 24 municipios, or districts, in Veracruz, Mexico during a five-year cropping period (1997-–2002). A stochastic frontier approach is used in order to estimate an input distance function and evaluate production efficiency during the period. Factors such as coffee quality and access to markets are tested in terms of their effect on efficiency. The results show the production process in these municipios, as measured by technical efficiency, seems to be stable over time despite of price fluctuations in the global market. Production of staple crops (corn) along with...

VARIETAL SALES AND QUALITY DIFFERENTIATION: THE CASE OF CERTIFIED SOYBEAN SEED IN THE SOUTHEASTERN U.S. AgEcon
Houston, Jack E.; Jeong, Kihong; Fletcher, Stanley M..
Variation in annual soybean plantings contributes to uncertainty in supplies of and demand for soybean seed in the southeastern U.S. This study used an expenditure valuation approach in an hedonic analysis framework to estimate returns to soybean seed quality differentiation. Analysis of pooled cross-sectional and time series observations narrowed important quality characteristics to yield and disease resistance attributes. In general, unexpected environmental factors affect seed crops over time, and the demand for other performance attributes is less predictable than for expected yield attributes. The results also suggest that geographical location is not significantly related to sales of varietal soybean seed in the study area.

An Interactive Decision Model Integrating Broiler Production and Processing Responsiveness to Consumer and Producer Prices AgEcon
Costa, Ecio de Farias; Houston, Jack E..
In the vertically integrated poultry industry, profit maximization for broiler integrators must incorporate feed formulation, broiler production, and broiler processing operations to determine optimally sized birds for the most profitable market segments. Here, substituting cottonseed meal (CSM) for soybean meal (SBM) in broiler feed is evaluated under changing input and product market conditions, where there are two processing options – whole carcass vs. cut-up parts. For the prices analyzed, CSM-fed broilers earn higher profits for whole carcass processing, while SBM-fed broilers earn higher returns for cut-up parts processing. Optimal protein levels used in the feed processes exceed currently recommended levels.

PARTS OR WHOLE? EFFICIENT BROILER PRODUCTION RESPONSES TO CONSUMER-DRIVEN MARKETS AgEcon
Costa, Ecio de Farias; Houston, Jack E.; Gunter, Lewell F.; Pesti, Gene M..
Adoption of consumer-market-oriented production on broiler profit-maximizing modeling generates results that differ from those traditionally used in profit maximization for broiler production. This model shows that the adoption of step-pricing and marketing options (examples of consumer-market-oriented decisions) modify the optimal levels and types of broiler production to generate maximum profitability. Thus optimal protein levels in the feed formulated exceed currently recommended levels and alternative protein sources are also allocated. The adoption of step-pricing to respond to consumer-market-oriented decisions shows that higher profits can be obtained for targeted weights only if premium prices for output are allocated.

The Impact of Cholesterol Information on Meat Demand: Application of an Updated Cholesterol Index AgEcon
Adhikari, Murali; Paudel, Laxmi; Houston, Jack E.; Paudel, Krishna P.; Bukenya, James O..
We estimate an almost ideal-demand system (AIDS) to assess the impacts of cholesterol information on the market demand of meats in the U.S. Our study indicates a significant negative impact of cholesterol information on the market demand of beef and pork and a significant positive influence on chicken demand. The study further demonstrated that the flow of carbohydrate information lessened the magnitude of cholesterol health information elasticities.

Ruffled Feathers: Tariff Rate Quotas and Voluntary Export Agreements in U.S.-Mexican Poultry Meat Trade AgEcon
Velasquez, Sonia; Gunter, Lewell F.; Ames, Glenn C.W.; Houston, Jack E..
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) opened up trade opportunities between the U.S. and Mexico in poultry products. Mexico agreed to reduce tariffs on agricultural products over the adjustment period and eliminate non-tariff barriers. As the phase-in of the NAFTA liberalizations reached completion, safeguard measures were instituted to protect Mexican producers from dumping or import surges and consumers from unsafe foods. Under NAFTA, tariffs on poultry meat imported into Mexico fell from 260% in 1993 to zero in 2003. Imports surged and Mexican poultry producers petitioned for protection. In July 2003, Mexico imposed a bilateral safeguard measure in the form of an annual TRQ on chicken leg quarters to protect local producers for five years....

MODELING AGRICULTURAL WATER MARKETS FOR HYDROPOWER PRODUCTION IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST AgEcon
Houston, Jack E.; Whittlesey, Norman K..
More than two-thirds of Pacific Northwest electricity is produced from hydropower on the Columbia River system. Irrigated agriculture in the region has a large impact on power supplies by diverting water that could be used for hydropower and using electricity for pumping the water. This paper examines the potential for water markets that would permit sales of water from agriculture to the hydropower sector for energy production. It is shown that both farmers and energy consumers could be made better off by adopting water markets to reallocate water among these competing uses.

U.S. HOUSEHOLD CONSUMPTION OF FRESH FRUITS AgEcon
He, Hua; Huang, Chung L.; Houston, Jack E..
This study uses the 1987-88 U.S. Department of Agriculture Nationwide Food Consumption Survey data to analyze the impacts of income, prices, and selected socioeconomic characteristics on household consumption of fresh fruits. Results suggest that fresh fruits are considered economic necessities, with own prices significantly influencing consumption. Cross-price effects are generally weak and insignificant, but the number of adults in the age group 18-64 is an important determinant of household consumption of fresh fruits. While nutrition information and household savings have significant, positive influences on most fresh fruit consumption, the presence of a working wife has a significant and negative influence.

Effects of Price Volatility and Surging South American Soybean Production on Short-run Soybean Basis Dynamics AgEcon
Zhang, Rui (Carolyn); Houston, Jack E..
This study investigates the effects of South American production (SAP) and futures volatility on the soybean price dynamics in terms of their effects on the basis. The results of the econometric model showed that both South American production and futures volatility of the nearby contract have negative effects on the basis though in the forecast model, lagged values of these two factors failed to predict basis change in the future. If information about the change of the expected SAP or futures volatility is available, then the model can predict the changes in basis. This information would be helpful for hedgers to decide the time to lift their hedge.

Diversification in Low-Grade Coffee-Growing Areas of Veracruz, Mexico: Market Possibilities AgEcon
Leon, Katia Romero; Houston, Jack E.; Epperson, James E..
The economic performance and development prospects of many developing countries are largely dependent on commodity exports. The heavy dependence of such countries on a few commodities has an adverse economic impact. Coffee provides a particularly important share of the export earnings of many developing countries. The world market is largely for high-quality coffee; for this reason, a diversification program in Mexico is important to eliminate dependence on coffee with a low rate of return-in this case, coffee grown in Veracruz in areas under 6500 meters (nearly 2,000 feet) above sea level. This paper evaluates the potential diversification opportunities for this region, particularly for tropical commodities such as papaya, guava, anthurium, and vanilla.

INCORPORATING CONSUMER DEMAND IN BROILER PROFIT-MAXIMIZATION MODELING AgEcon
Costa, Ecio de Farias; Houston, Jack E.; Gunter, Lewell F.; Pesti, Gene M..
Increased emphasis on consumer markets in broiler profit-maximizing modeling generates results that differ from those of traditional profit-maximization models. This approach reveals that the adoption of step-pricing and consideration of marketing options (examples of responsiveness to consumers) affect the optimal feed-formulation levels and types of broiler production to generate maximum profitability. With the adoption of step-pricing, higher profits can be obtained for targeted weights only if premium prices for broiler products are contracted.

Economic Analysis of Recycling Chiller Water in Poultry-Processing Plants Using Ultrafiltration Membrane Systems AgEcon
Saravia, Horacio; Houston, Jack E.; Epperson, James E.; Nelson, Heather M..
The poultry industry, one of the most important agribusiness industries in the United States, is facing multiple water-usage problems. These problems stem from rising water and sewer charges and an increase in pollution regulations. One way to reduce water usage and volume of wastewater is through internal recycling. Food scientists and applied economists at the University of Georgia are collaborating to evaluate the operational and economic effectiveness of polymeric ultrafiltration membrane technology at poultry processing plants. On-site tests of membrane system are underway, and preliminary economic analysis indicates highly positive prospects for this technology.

Dynamic Estimation of U.S. Demand for Fresh Vegetable Imports AgEcon
Nzaku, Kilungu; Houston, Jack E..
This paper analyses U.S. demand for fresh vegetable imports using a dynamic AIDS model. The commodities selected for the study include tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and asparagus. The results shows that the demand for fresh vegetable imports is more elastic compared to the demand for domestic fresh vegetables. Also demand for all the fresh vegetables is significantly responsive to changes in own-price and expenditure. Fresh tomatoes, peppers, and cucumber imports do not complement domestic supply as is often believed but are significant substitutes.

SEASONAL LABOR CONSTRAINTS AND INTRA-HOUSEHOLD DYNAMICS IN THE FEMALE FIELDS OF SOUTHERN CAMEROON AgEcon
Elad, Renata L.; Houston, Jack E..
Women's agricultural production is modeled as a sequential switching regression process determined by men's clearing labor capacity and women's harvest labor capacity. Results show that output was more often constrained by husband's clearing labor. However, men's economic contribution to household consumption is inversely related to women's agricultural output.

Production Efficiency and Diversification in Mexican Coffee-Producing Districts AgEcon
Vedenov, Dmitry V.; Houston, Jack E.; Cardenas, Gabriela.
Coffee production system is analyzed for 24 municipios (districts) in Veracruz, Mexico, from 1997 to 2002. A stochastic frontier approach is used to estimate an input distance function and to evaluate production efficiency. Results show the production process to be stable over time despite global price fluctuations. Production of staple crop (corn) with either coffee or other cash crops results in increased efficiency as a result of the economies of complementarity, while production of coffee with other cash crops leads to lower efficiency. Factors contributing to higher efficiency included higher population density, road availability, and higher altitude, typically associated with production of higher-quality coffee.

FORECASTING IRRIGATION WATER DEMAND: A STRUCTURAL AND TIME SERIES ANALYSIS AgEcon
Adhikari, Murali; Houston, Jack E.; Paudel, Laxmi; Bandyopadhyay, Dipankar; Paudel, Biswo Nath; Devkota, Nirmala.
An expected utility model was developed to capture the impacts of wealth, other economic, and institutional factors on irrigation acreage allocation decisions. Predicted water demand is derived from an expected utility structural model and various ARIMA models. No significant differences arise between forecasted irrigation acreage and, thereby, amount of forecasted water demand between econometric and time series models. However, estimates of water demand differ significantly from a Blaney-Criddle-based physical model. Keywords: water forecasting, acreage response, water slippage, BC formula
