Review Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
The first volume of this series was published in 1991, and reviewed in Blumea 38, p. 216. The treatments of volumes 2 and 3 are each based on a doctor’s thesis by the first author, elaborated under supervision of Dr. Panigrahi. Volume 2 contains regional revisions of six genera: Prunus, Prinsepia, Maddenia, Rosa, Malus, and Pyrus. Prunus is taken in the inclusive sense and has 38 species in India, including a number of non-indigenous but cultivated and sometimes naturalized species. Prinsepia and Maddenia have one species each in the region covered. Rosa is a well represented genus in India and 37 species are recognized, including several non-native garden roses. Of the Maloideae only Malus (4 species) and Pyrus (4 species) are treated.

Review Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
In the first sentence of the Preface the elusive concept of ethnobotany is defined in a rather restricted way: “the study of the use of plants by indigenous people”, ‘indigenous’ obviously meaning non-Western and not technologically advanced. Most of the chapters in this book (or rather: the papers brought together in this Symposium volume) agree with the definition given: Banack on plants used in making boats and during voyages; Kirch on agricultural systems; Abbot on uses of seaweeds; Cox on medicinal plants; Lebot on the use of Piper methysticum; Ragone on Artocarpus altilis. These chapters contain interesting stuff, as well from the anthropological as from the botanical point of view. Most of them are also well-written. I found especially the chapter...

Introduction Naturalis
George, A.S.; Kalkman, C.; Geesink, R..
When Flora Malesiana began, officially in 1950, its aim was to produce a comprehensive survey of an estimated 25,000 plant species in a period of a few decades. On the one hand the Flora had to be concise, on the other hand it had to be “a replacing encyclopedia” for all previously published knowledge. The approach was generally called ‘semi-monographic’, indicating that a certain degree of ‘completeness’ was to be realized in the treatments. Even in 1960, ten years later, the founder, Professor van Steenis wrote in an official report that the period necessary for completion would be 30 years (from 1960 onwards) and that the total size would be equivalent to 20 volumes like volumes I, 4 and I, 5 that had appeared in the first decade. Had Professor van...

Potentilla, Duchesnea, and Fragaria in Malesia (Rosaceae) Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
Nine species of Potentilla are recognized for the Malesian area, two more are insufficiently known. Of the nine species, one is new (P. hooglandii), a new variety is also described ( P. foersteriana var. ima). Duchesnea is considered congeneric with Potentilla. Although for Fragaria the same case could be made, it is kept separated for practical reasons and for reasons of nomenclatural stability. In Malesia two species occur, both introduced. Some reductions and nomenclatural rectifications will also be found in the present revision which is a precursor towards a revision of the Rosaceae for Flora Malesiana.

Revision of the Burseraceae of the Malaysian area in a wider sense. VIa, VII—IX Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
Of this series of preparations to the definite publication of the Burseraceae in “Flora Malesiana”, the present part is giving an additional note on VI. Garuga and dealing with the genera VII. Triomma, VIII. Dacryodes and IX. Santiria (and a new combination in Protium). The present paper gives only additions to and alterations of Lam’s monograph (H. J. Lam, Bull. Jard. Bot. Buitenz., Sér. 3, 12, 1932, 281— 561); descriptions, synonyms, litterature, specimens cited, ecological and other notes are only mentioned insofar as they are not given by Lam.

In Memoriam Dr. J. H. Kern Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
On 29 July 1974 dr. J. H. Kern died at the age of 70. At the occasion of his official retirement from the Rijksherbarium staff (January 1969) Van Steenis and Van Ooststroom gave due recognition to his achievements in tropical botany and to his share in the progress of the knowledge of the Dutch flora. There is no need to repeat here what was written at that time (Blumea 17, 1969, 1—3 and Gorteria 4, 1968, 69—72). After his retirement he was appointed honorary collaborator of the Rijksherbarium and at first he continued his work more or less as usual. However, his health soon became worse and his deteriorating eyesight prevented him from working with the microscope. Consequently, he could not finish the revision of Carex and Uncinia for Flora Malesiana, the...

Review Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
The title of this volume is a bit misleading. Apart from Rosaceae also the Chrysobalanaceae (two autochthonous species) and the Neuradaceae (one species) are treated. The bulk, however, concerns the Rosaceae in the more restricted and generally adapted sense. In India 32 genera of this family, comprising some 450 species, are autochthonous. Nine genera are treated in this volume, four ( Aruncus, Neillia, Sorbaria, and Spiraea) belonging to the subfamily Spiraeoideae and five ( Agrimonia, Alchemilla, Filipendula, Geum, and Sanguisorba) to the Rosoideae. Most of the genera have only few species (1 to 6) in India but Spiraea has 31 and Alchemilla has 26. The second part of the series is now in production and will contain studies on Rosa, some Maloideae and...

In Memoriam G.J. de Joncheere (1909—1989) Naturalis
Kalkman, C.; Lut, C.W.J..
On 8 January 1989 Gerardus Johannes de Joncheere died at the age of 79. He was an honorary staff member of the Fern section at the Rijksherbarium from 1974 to 1988, but his interest in Ferns dated already from before World War II. He always told that the purchase in 1939 of Backer & Posthumus, Fern Flora of Java, had started him, more or less by accident, on this group. In the course of time he acquired a sound knowledge of Ferns and after he had retired from his position as a director of a shipping-company, he still further developed his scientific interest. At the Rijksherbarium he became accepted as a knowledgeable colleague, although he did not publish much in the line of original research. He played, however, an important role in the...

The near future of Flora Malesiana Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
If we define the near future as the next five years, it can be said that there will be a considerable output of family revisions that can be published. Without undue optimism more than 30 family treatments will have been published before 1996 or their manuscripts will be in the hands of the editors.

In Memoriam C.G.G.J. van Steenis (1901—1986) Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
As could be announced summarily in the previous issue of Blumea, Professor Van Steenis died on 14 May 1986, after a short illness. In 1926 his first publications about Malesian plants came from the press, and so it has been a period of sixty years that he has devoted his life to the study of the Malesian flora. In Blumea 20 (1), 1972, at the occasion of his retirement as professor of Leiden University and director of the Rijksherbarium, two papers were published by, respectively, Mrs. M.J. van Steenis-Kruseman and Dr. M. Jacobs. Together they give a fairly extensive biographical picture and there seems to be no reason to reiterate the biographical facts at great length. A few highlights may suffice.

The genus Rubus (Rosaceae) in Malesia. 3. The subgenus Micranthobatus Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
Subgenus Micranthobatus is separated again from subg. Lampobatus sensu Focke (1911). The c.12 species have a scattered area of distribution, suggesting an old Gondwanan history. In Malesia five species are endemic in New Guinea (incl. New Britain), one is distributed in Borneo, the Philippines and Celebes. Two new species are described and one new variety. A key to the Malesian species is given. Remarks are made about two Australian species.

Review Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
The first volume on ornamentals contains (1) an original introduction to the plant geography of China, 12 pages and, indeed, not more than a very simplified introduction to the physical, climatological and vegetational diversity of China; (2) a translation of five chapters from E.H. Wilson, A naturalist in Western China (1913), viz. on the flora of western China, on travels in NW Hupei, and on the flora of Ichang, Emei Shan, and Wa Shan (more than 50 pages); (3) a number of ‘plant portraits’, more than 40 paragraphs each covering one species or sometimes a genus, altogether more than 60 pages; (4) a list of the older plant hunters in China (almost all ‘expatriate’, covering on a total of 42 collectors only 3 with Chinese names!), a list of literature...

Review Naturalis
Kalkman, C.; Adema, F..
This book intends (according to the preface) to afford at once a review, a general outline of what has been accomplished, and a set of signposts for the future. It attempts to do so in three sections on Origin and Diversification of Primitive Land Plants (4 papers), Origin and Diversification of Angiosperms (6 papers), and Speciation and Mechanisms of Diversification (5 papers). In a sense our discipline is in a state of change that could be called revolutionary, rapidly acquiring new facts. In this situation the need is felt for a survey of what has been accomplished and what the future may bring. This slim volume serves as a prime example of an attempt to do so. It covers phylogenetic fields: early land plants, Pteridophytes, conifer families,...

Dioecious, rarely monoecious trees or shrubs. Bark of twigs with a whorl of resiniferous ducts, bordered on the outer side by a distinct, closed or more or less interrupted sinuous sclerenchymatic cylinder. Pith of the twigs, petioles and petiolules not rarely with vascular strands, those in the twigs mostly amphivasal with mainly sclerenchymatic xylem, those in the petioles and petiolules collateral and consisting of abundant phloem, the strands predominantly reduced to mere vestigial resiniferous ducts. Leaves imparipinnate, sometimes 1-foliolate; spirally arranged, very rarely in pseudowhorls, usually more or less crowded at the ends of the branchlets. Stipules absent, Garuga and Canarium excepted (see Morph.); in addition in Garuga stipellas are often...

Kalkman, C.; Leenhouts, P.W..
“The Wealth of India” is a series continuing the tradition set by Watt’s Dictionary a century ago. It is probably the most complete and most useful treatise on plant products that has ever been written for any major country. Since the first edition (1949-1979) information has increased tremendously and therefore a second revised edition is now being prepared. Letter A was already published in 1985 and the present volume covers letter B: 350 pages of text in two columns on large pages (against 111 in the corresponding part of the original volume 1).

The Old World species of Prunus subg. Laurocerasus including those formerly referred to Pygeum Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
The present study was originally intended to be a taxonomic revision of the genus Pygeum (Rosaceae). This genus was always considered to be closely related to, but different from Prunus. However, the delimitation of Pygeum against Prunus subg. Laurocerasus appeared to be extremely difficult, and after careful consideration I was compelled to reduce Pygeum to Prunus. This reduction is the most radical taxonomic novelty in the present paper (Chapter 3). A new subdivision of subg. Laurocerasus, now enriched with Pygeum, was inevitable. Three sections are distinguished here, viz.: a. sect. Laurocerasus, containing the Eurasian and tropical Asiatic species which were already considered by older authors to belong to the (sub)genus Laurocerasus, and moreover the...
