Current World Status of Organic Temperate Fruits Organic Eprints
Granatstein, David; Kirby, Elisabeth; Willer, Helga.
Consumption of organic food has steadily increased in the primary markets of the European Union and North America. However, the statistical information base to describe this growth is either incomplete or inaccessible, and sometimes inaccurate. In the U.S., fruits and vegetables make up 40% of organic food sales, implying that the expanding overall market has also increased demand for organic temperate fruits such as apple, grape, and strawberry. Organic fruit in several European countries comprises over 5% of all fruit sales. Data on organic temperate fruit production have been compiled by FiBL and Washington State University. In 2006, there were at least 250,000 ha of organic temperate fruit (pome, stone, grapes, and berries) under production...

Global situation for organic tree fruits Organic Eprints
Granatstein, David; Kirby, Elisabeth; Ostenson, Harold; Willer, Helga.
Consumer demand for organic tree fruit products in Europe and North America, the dominant organic food markets, has spurred increases in organic area and production globally. From 2008–2013, the area of production grew 109%, 42%, and 53% for organic temperate tree fruits, citrus, and tropical/subtropical fruits, respectively, with much lower growth for total area (non-organic plus organic) in these categories. Most organic tree fruits represent approximately 1–2% of total production area for a specific fruit; avocado is the exception, with 8% of avocado area worldwide under organic management. Mexico, Italy, and China are the top three countries in terms of organic tree fruit area, but not all countries segregate tree fruit crops in the organic statistics...

The Production Base for Organic Temperate Fruit, Berries and Grapes Organic Eprints
Granatstein, David; Kirby, Elisabeth; Willer, Helga.
Fresh fruit consumption is being promoted for health reasons in North America, Europe and other regions. Consumers are responding, as evidenced by the 20 percent increase in per capita fruit consumption in the past 30 years. US consumers have increased fruit consumption by 23 percent, but they still consume half the amount recommended by the dietary guidelines of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Fruit production often requires significant intervention with pesticides to control pests and diseases. Thus, health conscious consumers increasingly see organic fruit as a logical package. Fruit and vegetable sales account for about 40 percent of the retail sales of organic foods in the US (93 percent of this is fresh produce), with fruit...

The Global Extent and Expansion of Organic Horticulture Production Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga; Granatstein, David; Kirby, Elisabeth.
Organic agriculture continues to expand worldwide, despite the economic recession of 2008. This growth is driven by consumer demand in European and North American markets, as well as the potential of organic farming to address resource conservation, food security, and farm income issues in developing countries. Organic systems often build soil organic matter, which sequesters carbon to help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions (Niggli et al., 2007). Increasingly, horticultural crops, especially fruits and vegetables, are being promoted as a critical part of a healthy diet that can help avoid problems such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Not surprising, consumers interested in healthy diets are often also attracted to organic foods (Hartman Group,...
