Notes on New Guinea Rubiaceae. Versteegia and Maschalodesme Naturalis
Ridsdale, C.E.; Bakhuizen van den Brink, R.C.; Koek-Noorman, J..
Within the rain forests of New Guinea there are many small pachycaul treelets belonging to the Rubiaceae. Generally these are rare in occurrence and poorly represented in the herbarium, due in part to the problem of protecting rami- or cauliflorous flowers and fruits during routine processing and storage. All have a similar general appearance and are difficult to assign to a particular genus. Indeed, the generic limits and relationships of many have been in doubt since they were described and few have been re-investigated in light of more recent collections and ideas. Versteegia and Maschalodesme are two of the better known genera. These are considered from a taxonomic point of view together with notes on the wood anatomy and cuticular structures. The...

Wood anatomy, classification and phylogeny of the Melastomataceae Naturalis
Vliet, G.J.C.M. van; Koek-Noorman, J.; Welle, B.J.H. ter.
A classification of the Melastomataceae, modified on the basis of wood anatomical evidence, is discussed. Three subfamilies (Crypteronioideae, Memecyloideae and Melastomatoideae) are recognized . Astronioideae, recognized in other classifications, are abolished and their constituent genera are classified in Memecyloideae (Pternandra) and Melastomatoideae (four genera of the tribe Astronieae). Wood anatomically Melastomataceae show affinities with a number of Myrtalean families, notably with Lythraceae, Onagraceae and Myrtaceae. The wood anatomy of ancestral ‘Protomelastomataceae’ is hypothesized and a tentative phylogeny is suggested for the extant subfamilies and tribes.

Wood and leaf anatomy of Opiliaceae Naturalis
Koek-Noorman, J.; Rijckevorsel, P. v..
The wood and leaf anatomy of representatives of the 9 genera of the Opiliaceae are described in detail. It is possible to separate the genera on the base of both wood- and leaf anatomical characters. Herein the presence of cystoliths of varying shape and size is important. Some comments on the taxonomy and possible phylogeny of the familiy are given.

The systematic wood anatomy of the Moraceae (Urticales) IV. Genera of the tribe Moreae with urticaceous stamens Naturalis
Welle, B.J.H. ter; Koek-Noorman, J.; Topper, S.M.C..
The wood anatomy of the genera of the tribe Moreae with urticaceous stamens, viz. Broussonetia, Madura s.l. (including Cardiogyne, Chlorophora, and Cudrania), Malaisia, Milicia, Morus, Olmedia, Pachytrophe, Plecospermum, Sloetiopsis, Streblus s.l. (including Paratrophis, Phyllochlamys, Pseudostreblus, and Sloetia), and Trophis s.l.(including Calpidochlamys and Maillardia), is described in detail. Separate descriptions have been made for sections and/or subgenera to facilitate the discussion about the generic delimitations made by several taxonomists. The following generic combinations previously proposed by taxonomists are supported by wood anatomical features: Broussonetia + Allaeanthus: Maclura + Chlorophora + Cardiogyne + Cudrania + Plecospermum. The...

Wood anatomical classification using iterative character weighing Naturalis
Hogeweg, P.; Koek-Noorman, J..
In this paper we investigate the pattern of wood anatomical variation in some groups of Rubiaceae (i.e. Cinchoneae, Rondeletieae and Condamineae) by using a numerical pattern detection method which involves character weighing (Hogeweg 1975). In this method character weights are obtained iteratively on the basis of the distribution of character values in previously generated classes; these classes being generated by agglomerative cluster analysis, initially with characters weighed equally and subsequently with characters weighed differentially as indicated above. The result of such a study consists of a sequence of dendrograms together with the character weights by which these are produced. Our biological conclusions include: The so obtained results confirm...

Studies in Annonaceae. IX. New species from the Neotropics and miscellaneous notes Naturalis
Maas, P.J.M.; Heusden, E.C.H. van; Koek-Noorman, J.; Setten, A.K. van; Westra, L.Y.Th..
This paper follows upon an earlier paper in the series “Studies in Annonaceae” (Maas et al. 1986). Twelve new species are described, viz. 2 in Duguetia, 1 in Ephedranthus, 5 in Guatteria, 2 in Hornschuchia, 1 in Tetrameranthus, and 1 in Unonopsis. A new combination is made in Enicosanthellum. Some amendments and additions to the revision of Tetrameranthus (Westra 1985), including an updated key, are given. Monocarpia euneura Miq. appears to have priority over M. marginalis (R. Scheffer) James Sincl. Additional collections have been made of the rare species Bocagea longepedunculata Martius, Xylopia crinita R.E. Fries, and Xylopia excellens R.E. Fries. Attention is drawn to several recent collections from Bahia, Brazil, which are perhaps referable to...

The systematic wood anatomy of the Moraceae (Urticales) III. Tribe Ficeae Naturalis
Koek-Noorman, J.; Topper, S.M.C.; Welle, B.J.H. ter.
The wood anatomy of the tribe Ficeae, comprising one genus, Ficus, is described. Considering the large number of species, the genus is remarkably homogeneous. It is characterised by abundant axial parenchyma in regular apotracheal concentric bands and narrow vasicentric rings, and by relatively wide vessels. On the basis of these characters. Ficus can easily be recognised within the family. No correlation between wood anatomy and subgeneric classification as proposed by recent taxonomists could be established, and relationships between character variation and geographical and ecological distribution were hardly found.

The occurrence of axial latex tubes in the secondary xylem of some species of Artocarpus J. R. & G. Forster (Moraceae) Naturalis
Topper, S.M.C.; Koek-Noorman, J..
In a number of species of Artocarpus J.R. & G. Forster (Moraceae) laticifers were not only observed as radial tubes, enclosed in the ray tissue, but also as axial tubes, enclosed in the fibre tissue. Both types of latex tubes are connected and considered as one branched laticiferous system. A detailed description of the individual latex tubes and the whole system, based on light microscopic and scanning electron microscopic observation, is presented.

Systematic wood anatomy of the tribe Guettardeae (Rubiaceae) Naturalis
Welle, B.J.H. ter; Loureiro, A.A.; Lisboa, P.L.B.; Koek-Noorman, J..
Systematic wood anatomy of the tribe Guettardeae (Rubiaceae). The wood anatomy of nearly all genera of the Guettardeae (Rubiaceae, Guettardoideae) has been examined, and in this respect the tribe is heterogeneous. Suggestions are made for a delimitation of the tribe. Guettarda, Bobea, Antirhea, Malanea and Chomelia Jacq. are sufficiently similar in their wood anatomical characters to warrant retention in the same tribe. Machaonia, Timonius and Dichilanthe are anomalous. Suggestions are given for taxonomic revisions of some genera based on their wood anatomy.

Studies in Annonaceae. XIII. The role of morphological characters in subsequent classifications of Annonaceae: A comparative survey Naturalis
Koek-Noorman, J.; Westra, L.Y.Th.; Maas, P.J.M..
A comparative survey of several historical classifications of Annonaceae down to the subtribal level is given. The role of various key characters is briefly discussed. The present paper at the same time may be considered as an introductory paper to forthcoming publications of general studies on flower and fruit characters now being conducted at Utrecht.

A contribution to the wood anatomy of South American (Chiefly Suriname) Rubiaceae. I Naturalis
Koek-Noorman, J..
A general description of the structure of the wood of the Rubiaceae is given, based on examination of samples from most subfamilies. The results of the author’s investigation are compared with the data in the literature. The features of vessels, rays, and parenchyma agree well with those reported by other investigators. When the fibres are divided into libriform fibres and fibre tracheids in the sense of Janssonius, the correlation between the distribution of these organs and recent taxonomic subdivisions of the family is better than when all fibres with bordered pits are regarded as fibre tracheids.

The anatomy of branch abscission layers in Perebea molllis and Naucleopsis guianensis (Castilleae, Moraceae) Naturalis
Koek-Noorman, J.; Welle, B.J.H. ter.
The shedding of branches along a preformed layer is a complex phenomenon in which several types of xylem elements are involved. The abscission layers in Perebea mollis and Naucleopsis guianensis are distinguished from the normally developed xylem by the presence of shorter unlignified fibres with small simple pits. Most of these fibres show large nuclei. In this zone containing abnormal fibres, the vessels, rays and parenchyma are conspicuously different from those of the normal tissue. The transition in anatomy from the main branch to the abscission layer is much more abrupt than that from the abscission layer to the secondary branch. Contrary to what is generally seen in other Moraceous tribes, natural pruning seems to occur in all genera of Olmedieae...

Wood anatomy of the Blakeeae (Melastomataceae) Naturalis
Koek-Noorman, J.; Hogeweg, P.; Maanen, W.H.M. van; Welle, B.J.H. ter.
The present paper deals with the wood anatomy of the Blakeeae (Melastomataceae). Generic descriptions of the secondary xylem of Blakea, Topobea, and Huilaea are given and compared with data on 16 genera of the Miconieae. Numerical pattern detection was undertaken. The results confirm our preliminary ideas that Blakea and Topobea do not differ enough to enable the separation of these genera on the basis of their wood anatomy. Within the Miconieae it is not possible to separate the genera. However, some anatomical differences between the two tribes were found. The genus Huilaea seems to belong in the Blakeeae although it also shows similarities with the Miconieae. Wurdack’s suggestion (pers. comm.) that the Blakeeae are closest to the genera Loreya and...

The systematic wood anatomy of the Moraceae (Urticales) I. Tribe Castilleae Naturalis
Koek-Noorman, J.; Topper, S.M.C.; Welle, B.J.H. ter.
The wood anatomy of the tribe Castilleae sensu Berg is described. Similarities and differences are discussed in relation to his concepts of the taxonomy of the tribe. The wood anatomical variation does not enable to distinguish between Maquira, Perebea and Pseudolmedia. Antiaris, Castilla, Helicostylis, Mesogyne and Naucleopsis can be recognised on the basis of slight differences. However, no reasons are found to question the delimitation of the Castilleae sensu Berg on the basis of their wood anatomy.

A contribution to the wood anatomy of South American (Chiefly Suriname) Rubiaceae. II Naturalis
Koek-Noorman, J..
This paper contains a discussion of the taxonomic subdivisions of the Rubiaceae as proposed by Schumann, Verdcourt, and Bremekamp. Generally speaking, the subdivisions as proposed and delimited by Bremekamp agree best with the characters of the wood structure, as observed by the author. Furthermore a key to the Suriname genera is given.

Studies in Annonaceae. VII. New species from the Neotropics and miscellaneous notes Naturalis
Maas, P.J.M.; Heusden, E.C.H. van; Koek-Noorman, J.; Setten, A.K. van; Westra, L.Y.Th..
Several species in neotropical genera are described, viz. 1 in Bocageopsis, 2 in Cremastosperma, 1 in Hornschuchia, 1 in Oxandra, 4 in Pseudoxandra, and 2 in Unonopsis. Cremastosperma anomalum R.E. Fries is transferred to Malmea. Cremastosperma pacificum R.E. Fries is recorded for Panama for the first time. Xylopia ulei Diels, X. neglecta (O. Kuntze) R.E. Fries, and X. intermedia R.E. Fries are brought into synonymy with X. benthamii R.E. Fries, X. parviflora Spruce, and X. sericea A. St.Hil. respectively. The African Xylopia parviflora (A. Rich.) Benth., non Spruce, now has to bear the name X. longipetala De Wild, et T. Durand.

Studies in Annonaceae V. Additional notes on Anaxagorea A. St. Hil Naturalis
Maas, P.J.M.; Westra, L.Y.Th.; Koek-Noorman, J..
After completion of the monograph of Anaxagorea, a number of new collections were studied and annotated. Among this material there appeared to be a new species from Venezuela, at the same time the first true rheophyte in Annonaceae. The rare and hitherto incompletely known A. silvatica has now turned up from the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil. The flower of this species is described for the first time. New records are mentioned insofar as they add to previously existing information.

Studies in Annonaceae. VIII. A cladistic analysis of Tetrameranthus Naturalis
Koek-Noorman, J.; Zandee, M.; Westra, L.Y.Th..
The small genus Tetrameranthus (five species) stands isolated within the Annonaceae. A cladistic analysis was carried out using macromorphological characters in order to find possible apomorphies and to attempt a phylogenetic reconstruction. In the “best” cladograms there appear two subsets, one formed by T. duckei, T. macrocarpus, and T. pachycarpus, the other by T. laomae and T. umbellatus. Both are supported by a number of apomorphic character states. Any other conclusions remain speculative.

On fibres, Parenchyma and intermediate forms in the genus Miconia (Melastomataceae) Naturalis
Welle, B.J.H. ter; Koek-Noorman, J..
A preliminary account is given of the parenchyma-like tangential bands, as seen on the transverse surface of Miconia species. The bands consist of parenchyma strands, fusiform parenchyma cells and fibres. These fibres differ from the fibres of the ground tissue in wall thickness, lumen diameter and sometimes in pit size. In the bands intermediate forms between parenchyma cells and fibres occur. The functional relationship between the elements forming the parenchyma-like bands is discussed. The systematic value of this phenomenon is still uncertain. In other genera of the Melastomataceae, however, as well as in other families of the Myrtales it has also been observed.

The systematic wood anatomy of the Moraceae (Urticales) II. Tribe Dorstenieae Naturalis
Koek-Noorman, J.; Topper, S.M.C.; Welle, B.J.H. ter.
The wood anatomy of the tribe Dorstenieae sensu Berg is described. Similarities and differences are discussed in relation to his concepts of the taxonomy of the tribe. Wood anatomically the tribe Dorstenieae is fairly homogeneous, Dorstenia deviating most in the juvenilistic composition of its rays, and the small diameter and high frequency of its vessels. Bosqueiopsis differs from the other genera in the presence of fibre pits in the radial and tangential walls. Helianthostylis and Trymatococcus are highly similar. Brosimum shows a variation range exceeding that of the entire tribe. Nevertheless, individual species of Brosimum can often not be distinguished. The genera Brosimum, Helianthostylis, Trymatococcus, and Trilepisium are closely related. The...
