Hungarian meat sector restructuration in the post-EU accession period AgEcon
Konig, Gabor; Nagy Orbanne, Maria.
other Hungarian food industry sectors and also compared to the concentration level in West European countries. In the sector the share of foreign capital is also very low (17%). Because of the low share of foreign capital and relatively small concentration, structural and ownership changes were to be expected, resulting in a more concentrated and competitive sector. The restructuring process involved a number of steps. First of all, Sándor Csányi acquired Délhús and then later acquired Pick Szeged, and in 2005 these two corporations’ sectoral share was about 25%. As for the other two large corporations – R-KO-N and Carnex – in late 2005 the latter weakened significantly causing a loss in market share and the bankruptcy of two companies within its...

AZ ÁTALAKULÓ MAGYARORSZÁGI TEJGAZDASÁG AgEcon
Konig, Gabor.
Az EU csatlakozással a tejágazatban bár bővült a belföldi piac – nőtt a forgalom és a fogyasztás, amit a növekvő olcsó import fedezett –, a felvásárlás és az értékesítés (bel- és külpiacra egyaránt) csökkent, illetve stagnált. Az import erősödése a hazai cégek belpiaci részesedését mintegy 80%-ra csökkentette, miközben a vállalati koncentráció még intenzívebbé vált a magyar tejágazatban, s a nagyvállalatok tovább erősítették pozíciójukat, míg a kicsik tovább gyengültek. 2005-ben a Parmalat – állami segítséggel – termelői tulajdonba került, ami a vertikális integráció erősödéséhez vezetett. A külföldi tulajdon meghatározó helyzetbe került a tejiparban – 2004-ben 87% volt a részesedése, ami a második legnagyobb az élelmiszeripari alágazatok között –, célja...

Changes in the Hungarian dairy industry after EU accession AgEcon
Konig, Gabor; Major, Anita.
Since EU accession the Hungarian dairy industry’s domestic market has generally expanded as turnover and consumption have both grown, but this has been increasingly due to cheap imports, while the purchase and sale of domestic products has been decreasing or stagnating (both in the domestic and foreign markets). The growth in imports has cut Hungarian corporations domestic market share to 80%. In Hungary corporate concentration has become even more pronounced with large corporations further strengthening their position and smaller ones further shrinking. Moreover, foreign ownership prevails and has the primary aim of meeting domestic demand. Changes in ownership contribute to the strengthening of vertical integration. Still, in the EU corporate...

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE HUNGARIAN AGRICULTURAL TRADE AFTER THE EU ACCESSION AgEcon
Konig, Gabor.
The paper discusses the changes of the Hungarian agricultural trade, and shows how different factors (both internal and external) determine the flow of agricultural trade. The analyses show that although the EU plays a role more and more important in the Hungarian trade, the balance became worse, partly because of the increase of import from Germany and from Poland. The worsening trend of the trade after the accession shows that although the competitiveness is increasing it is still behind the improvement of competitiveness of the members of the EU-15 and 10 (partly because of the change of trade agreements, of subsidies and tariffs). In advantageous years (for cereals) the trends of trade with Romania and Bulgaria may have a positive effect on the flow of...

Over fifteen years have elapsed since the transition from the centrally planned economic system started in the early 1990’s. During this time agricultural and rural areas of Central and Eastern Europe have undergone profound structural changes with wide variations in the degree of transformation and in the rate of success in creating a competitive market and private ownership based food and agricultural system. By becoming member of the European Union the "transition" in its traditional interpretation has been concluded in ten of the Central East European countries. The transition to market based agriculture, however, is far from completion in Southern and Eastern Europe and especially in the CIS countries. International Association of Agricultural...
