Dung beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeinae) attracted to sheep dung in exotic pastures Rev. Bras. entomol.
Correa,César Murilo de Albuquerque; Puker,Anderson; Korasaki,Vanesca; Oliveira,Naiara Gimenes de.
Dung beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeinae) attracted to sheep dung in exotic pastures. In this study we provide data on the abundance and richness of dung beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Scarabaeinae) attracted to sheep dung in exotic pastures (Brachiaria spp.). In four areas of exotic pasture pitfall traps were installed and baited with fresh sheep dung for sampling of dung beetles. A total of 2,290 individuals were captured belonging to 16 species, 10 genera and five tribes of Scarabaeinae beetles. Trichillum externepunctatum Preudhomme de Borre, 1886 and Dichotomius bos (Blanchard, 1843) were dominant. The guild of dwellers was the most abundant in pastures. We demonstrate that dung beetles are attracted to sheep dung. Since the production of both...

A comparison of dung beetle assemblage structure (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) between an Atlantic forest fragment and adjacent abandoned pasture in Paraná, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Lopes,José; Korasaki,Vanesca; Catelli,Lizandra L; Marçal,Viviani V. M; Nunes,Maria Paula B. P.
The study was conducted at the Mata dos Godoy State Park in Londrina, state of Paraná, Brazil. Baited pitfall traps were installed in the forest, in adjacent abandoned pasture land, and on the borders between these two environments. Every two weeks, from June 1999 to May 2000, the traps were placed for 24 hours and the material was collected every 12 hours. The 4687 specimens of Scarabaeinae collected belong to 13 genera and 27 species. The most frequent species were Onthophagus catharinensis (Paulian, 1936) (22.1%), Onthophagus hirculus (Mannerhein, 1829) (20.1%), Dichotomius mormon (Ljungh, 1799) (13.1%), Sulcophanaeus menelas (Laporte, 1840) (12.8%), and Eurystemus parallelus (Dalman, 1824) (10.6%). The other species collected amounted to less than...

Omorgus suberosus and Polynoncus bifurcatus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea: Trogidae) in exotic and native environments of Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Correa,César M. A.; Puker,Anderson; Korasaki,Vanesca; Ferreira,Kleyton R..
Trogidae beetles are important for the decomposition of organic material in ecosystems. In the Neotropical region, little is known about this family, except for their taxonomy. In this study, we report the presence of Omorgus suberosus (Fabricius, 1775) and Polynoncus bifurcatus (Vaurie, 1962) in exotic and native environments of Brazil, sampled with different baits. The beetles were captured in pastures with introduced grass (Brachiaria spp.) and in patches of native forest (Brazilian savanna). We used pitfall traps baited with carrion and human feces every two weeks, from January to December 2011, and with carrion, cow dung, human feces and pig manure at the beginning of the rainy season (October 2011). Over the course of one year, 24 individuals of O....

Taxocenose de Scarabaeinae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) em Benjamin Constant, AM Acta Amazonica
Korasaki,Vanesca; Vaz-de-Mello,Fernando Z.; Braga,Rodrigo F.; Zanetti,Ronald; Louzada,Julio.

First report on dung beetles in intra-Amazonian savannahs in Roraima, Brazil Biota Neotropica
França,Filipe M.; Korasaki,Vanesca; Louzada,Julio; Vaz-de-Mello,Fernando Z..
This is the first study to address the dung beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) diversity in intra-Amazonian savannahs in the state of Roraima, Brazil. Our aim was to survey the dung beetle fauna associated with these savannahs (regionally called 'lavrado'), since little is known about the dung beetles from this environment. We conducted three field samples using pitfall traps baited with human dung in savannah areas near the city of Boa Vista during the rainy seasons of 1996, 1997, and 2008. We collected 383 individuals from ten species, wherein six have no previous record in intra-Amazonian savannahs. The most abundant species were Ontherus appendiculatus (Mannerheim, 1829), Canthidium aff. humerale (Germar, 1813), Dichotomius nisus (Olivier,...
