When trying to optimize the sustainability performance of farms and farming systems, a consideration of trade-offs and synergies between different themes and dimensions is required. The aim of this paper is to perform a systematic analysis of trade-offs and synergies across all dimensions and themes. To achieve this aim we used the Sustainability Monitoring and Assessment Routine (SMART)-Farm Tool which operationalizes the Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems (SAFA) Guidelines by defining science-based indicator sets and assessment procedures. It identifies the degree of goal achievement with respect to the 58 themes defined in the SAFA Guidelines using an impact matrix that defines 327 indicators and 1769 relations between...

Nachhaltigkeitsbewertungen basierend auf den SAFA-Leitlinien: Reduzierung von Unsicherheiten in expertenbasierten Modellen Organic Eprints
Heidenreich, A.; Landert, Jan; Schader, Christian.
The SMART-Farm Tool is a globally applicable method for analysing the sustainability performance of organic and conventional farms according to the SAFA Guidelines by the FAO. The aim of the project is to validate and further develop the model algorithms of the SMART-Farm Tool (a) by basing the model algorithms on results of a structured expert survey and (b) by taking into account uncertainties related to the assessments. For the expert survey, an adaptation of the Nominal Group Technique was applied. In a three-step process, 67 international experts rated the relative importance of the 327 SMART indicators for the 58 SAFA subthemes in 11 theme- and region-specific expert groups. The remaining deviations were analysed with Monte-Carlo simulations and...

Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung von Landwirtschaftsbetrieben nach den SAFA-Leitlinien Organic Eprints
Landert, Jan; Heidenreich, A.; Blockeel, Johan; Baumgart, Lukas; Schader, Christian.
To promote a common concept of sustainability assessment, the FAO published guidelines for the Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems (SAFA). The aim of this paper is to present and discuss a method, which operationalises the SAFA-Guidelines at farm level, based on the concept of Multi-Criteria Analysis. The assessment method determines the degree of goal achievement of the 58 SAFA subthemes using a set of over 300 indicators, which is adapted according to farm type and region. It is therefore globally applicable, able to identify differences in different areas of sustainability between farms and can complement existing methods such as LCA.

From Urban Agriculture to Urban Food: A Food System Analysis Based on Interaction Between Research, Policy, and Society Organic Eprints
Moschitz, Heidrun; Landert, Jan; Schader, Christian; Frick, Rebekka.
Urban agriculture is embedded in an urban food system, and its full potential can only be understood by looking into the dynamics of the system. Involving a variety of actors from civil society, policy, and the market, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the food system of the city of Basel, Switzerland, including policy and actor analysis, analysis of perceptions on urban agriculture, food flow analysis, and a sustainability assessment. The article presents the results of these analyses and discusses how research can contribute to the societal debate on food systems transformation. We particularly reflect on how the research project became a boundary object in a dynamic process to develop new ideas and activities, as well as to create a space for...

A Holistic Sustainability Assessment Method for Urban Food System Governance Organic Eprints
Landert, Jan; Schader, Christian; Moschitz, Heidrun; Stolze, Matthias.
A growing number of people live in cities. Urban food systems and their impacts on ecosystems and socio-economic conditions are becoming increasingly important. To address the challenge of making urban food systems more sustainable, a rising number of assessments of urban food systems have been published. Some used large quantitative datasets while others were descriptive in nature and/or do not address the whole thematic spectrum of sustainability. In this study, an indicator set was developed, which uses widely available data to address all dimensions of sustainability. The indicators focus on policies and measures of public administration and local politics and are based on the guidelines for Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems...

Accounting for uncertainty in multi-criteria sustainability assessments at the farm level: Improving the robustness of the SMART-Farm Tool Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Curran, Michael; Heidenreich, Anja; Landert, Jan; Blockeel, Johan; Baumgart, Lukas; Ssebunya, Brian; Moakes, Simon; Marton, Silvia; Lazzarini, Gianna; Niggli, Urs; Stolze, Matthias.
Many farm sustainability assessments use multi-criteria methods for aggregating indicators based on performance scores and importance weights. One of these is the SMART-Farm Tool, which measures the degree of goal achievement of farms across 327 indicators nested within 4 sustainability dimensions, 21 themes and 58 sub-themes of the FAO-SAFA Guidelines (Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture). This study aims to improve the empirical foundation of the SMART-Farm Tool by (i) evaluating the uncertainty of indicator weights obtained via expert opinion and (ii) integrating this uncertainty into SMART assessment results. An adapted Delphi process was implemented, involving a group of 67 experts from 21 countries divided into thematic and regional...
