The knowledge of the normal appearance and ocular dimensions of goat eyes facilitates the use of ultrasonography in the evaluation of ocular disease. The objective of the present study was to determine ultrasonographic and ecobiometric findings in the eyes of adult goats. B- and A-mode ultrasonography was performed in 30 healthy adult goats (60 eyes) (n=5 intact females and n=15 castrated males). Ultrasonography was performed after instillation of a topical anesthetic. Lubricating jelly was placed on the 20MHz transducer tip as a stand-off pad. The transducer was placed in a longitudinal position until optimal B-scan images, according to echoes of the A-mode images, were obtained. Statistical analysis was carried out to compare the ecobiometric readings...

Non-contact specular microscopy in aphakic and pseudophakic dogs Ciência Rural
Nagatsuyu,Claudia Emi; Abreu,Priscila Barreto de; Kobashigawa,Karina Kamachi; Conceição,Luciano Fernandes da; Morales,Adriana; Andrade,Alexandre Lima de; Padua,Ivan Ricardo Martinez; Martins,Bianca da Costa; Laus,José Luiz.
Cataract is one of the most common ocular diseases in dogs, and phacoemulsification is considered its treatment of choice. Posterior capsular opacity (PCO) is a frequent complication and may occur weeks or months after the surgery. It is known that intraocular lenses (IOL) used for the correction of post-operative hypermetropia are an adjunctive aid in the prevention of PCOs, mainly the foldable acrylics designs with square and truncated edges. However, IOL placement may result in endothelial cell loss. This study evaluated the morphology and cellularity of the endothelium by non-contact specular microscopy in aphakic and pseudophakic dogs. Endothelial cell density, endothelial cell area, coefficient of variation and hexagonal cells percent were analyzed...

Qualitative and quantitative tear film abnormalities in dogs Ciência Rural
Ribeiro,Alexandre Pinto; Brito,Fabio Luiz da Cunha; Martins,Bianca da Costa; Mamede,Fabrício; Laus,José Luiz.
Tear film disorders in dogs can be classified into quantitative or qualitative abnormalities, or both, and are commonly observed in daily clinical practice. Inadequate production of one or more tear film components can lead to variable degrees of ocular disorders, called keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca in dogs has several causes, but in most cases the disease is idiopathic, with T lymphocytes playing a role. In veterinary medicine, the diagnosis is made based on the results of the Schirmer tear test. In this article, we review aspects related to the etiopathogenesis and diagnosis of keratoconjunctivitis sicca in dogs and discuss new therapeutic modalities for this disease.

Lesões isquêmicas do testículo de cães mediante garroteamento temporário do cordão espermático Ciência Rural
Ferreira,Affonso Luiz; Crisci,Ana Rosa; Fiorani,Segundo Amarillis Salize; Laus,José Luiz; Jorge,Adriana Torrecilhas.
