Long-term exposure to near-future ocean acidification does not affect the expression of neurogenesis- and synaptic transmission-related genes in the olfactory bulb of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Mazurais, David; Servili, Arianna; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Gislard, Sebastien; Madec, Lauriane; Zambonino-infante, Jose-luis.
The decrease in ocean pH that results from the increased concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) is likely to influence many physiological functions in organisms. It has been shown in different fish species that ocean acidification (OA) mainly affects sensory systems, including olfaction. Impairment of olfactory function may be due to a dysfunction of the GABAergic system and to an alteration of neuronal plasticity in the whole brain and particularly in olfactory bulbs. Recent studies revealed that OA-driven effects on sensory systems are partly mediated by the regulation of the expression of genes involved in neurotransmission and neuronal development. However, these studies were performed in fish exposed to acidified waters for short periods, of...

Food deprivation reduces social interest in the European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Aimon, Cassandre; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Le Floch, Stephane; Claireaux, Guy.
Periods of food deprivation up to several months are common features for fishes and in such conditions, fitness will be determined by their capacity to maximize food encounter while minimizing predation risk. In this context, the propensity to take risk and the willingness to associate with conspecifics are particularly important as they contribute to alleviating the trade-off between predation avoidance and foraging efficiency. This study examined to what extent food deprivation modulates fish risk-taking and social behaviours, as well as the relationship between them. To address these issues juvenile European sea bass were either fed daily with a maintenance ration or food-deprived during 3 weeks. Risk-taking and sociability were assessed through...

Baud, Jean-pierre; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Haure, Joel; Nourry, Max; Palvadeau, Hubert; Penisson, Christian; Naciri-graven, Yamama; Goyard, Emmanuel; Barre, Marc.
As of 1985, Ifremer set up a selection programme for resistance to the protozoan Bonamia ostreae in European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis). Two selection lines, L85 and L89, from the third and second generation, respectively, were produced with 17 and 21 different families. The experimental design also included a mixed line (L85 x L89) of seven families and a control line of five families from Quiberon broodstock maintained without selection pressure.

Relationship between PAH biotransformation as measured by biliary metabolites and EROD activity, and genotoxicity in juveniles of sole (Solea solea) ArchiMer
Wessel, Nathalie; Santos, Raphael; Menard, Dominique; Le Menach, K.; Buchet, Vincent; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Loizeau, Veronique; Burgeot, Thierry; Budzinski, H.; Akcha, Farida.
Polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous contaminants in the marine environment Their toxicity is mainly linked to the ability of marine species to biotransform them into reactive metabolites PAHs are thus often detected at trace levels in animal tissues For biomonitoring purposes this findings have two main consequences (i) the determination of the PAH tissue concentration is not suitable for the evaluation of individual exposure to PAHs (ii) It can explain sometimes the lack of correlations obtained with relevant markers of toxicity such as genotoxicity biomarkers The aim of the present study was to better investigate the link between PAH exposure and genotoxicity in marine flatfish During a laboratory experiment juvenile soles were exposed...

Impact of essential fatty acid deficiency and temperature on tissues' fatty acid composition of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Skalli, Ali; Robin, Jean; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Le Delliou, Herve; Person, Jeannine.
The effects of essential fatty acid deficiency and temperature on the fatty acid profiles of polar lipids (PL) and neutral lipids (NL) from various tissues (muscle, liver, gills, eyes and brain) of European sea bass juveniles were compared in a two factorial design. Fish (60 g) were held for 84 days at 22 or 29 C (upper limit for growth) and fed either at a lower or a higher level than n-3 HUFA minimal requirement for growth (0.4% and 2.2% n-3 HUFA dry matter for diets LD and HD, respectively). Essential fatty acid deficiency had a major influence on fatty acids in NL fraction of all tissues, a more moderate influence on PL of muscle, liver and gills, while a low and very low diet influence was observed on eyes and brain PL fatty acid content,...

Does dietary n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids level influence the European sea bass (Dicentrachus labrax) capacity to adapt to a high temperature? ArchiMer
Person, Jeannine; Skalli, Ali; Dulau, Barbara; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Le Delliou, Herve; Robin, Jean.
Triplicate groups of European sea bass juveniles (60 g) were fed for 84 days two experimental diets containing either vegetable or marine oil (0.4 and 2.2% n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid [n-3 HUFA] dry matter in LD and HD, respectively) and held at 22 or 29 degreesC (LD-22, LD-29, HD-22 and HD-29 groups). Significant differences in mass gain between the two diets and temperatures were, observed from day 28 onwards, and on day 84, weight was 18% higher in the HD-29 group than in the LD-22 group (the highest and lowest values. respectively). Over the 84-day period-SGR was significantly affected both by temperatures and diets (P=6x10(-4) and 2x10(-4) respectively), averaging 1.01 and 1.07 in the HD-22 and HD-29 groups compared to 0.92 and 1.0 in the LD-22...

Contrôle des performances des souches d'huîtres plates résistantes au protozoaire Bonamia ostreae 2ème année ArchiMer
Haure, Joel; Nourry, Max; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Baud, Jean-pierre.

Effects of dietary tannin on growth, feed utilization and digestibility, and carcass composition in juvenile European seabass ( Dicentrarchus labrax L.) ArchiMer
Omnes, Marie-helene; Le Goasduff, Julien; Le Delliou, Herve; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Quazuguel, Patrick; Robin, Jean.
Plant-based products in fish diets are valuable protein alternatives to fishmeal for the aquafeed industry. Many plant feed ingredients contain polyphenolic compounds, including tannins, which can have beneficial or adverse effects. The tolerable threshold of ingested tannins is unknown for marine carnivorous fishes. We studied the effects of tannic acid (TA) supplementation to the diet of juvenile European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) by measuring growth, feed utilization and digestibility, and carcass composition. We randomly allocated groups of fish (initial mean body weight of 10.2 ± 0.7 g; n = 40 fish per tank) to 12 replicate cylindrical-conical tanks (three per treatment). The fish were assigned to one of four dietary treatments for five weeks:...

Effects of temperature, stocking density and farming conditions on fin damage in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Person, Jeannine; Le Bayon, Nicolas.
This paper presents a non invasive, rapid and reliable way to quantitatively assess fin erosion in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). The method is based on a visual assessment of fin profile and area loss of all fins except the anterior dorsal, on a scale from 0 to 4 in comparison with a perfect fin. The effects of stocking density (SD) and temperature on fin damage were investigated under experimental conditions (100-250 g fish). Over a 4-month period, mean erosion index (mean erosion level of all fins) was 10 times higher at 120 than at 20 kg m(-3), where most fins were undamaged. Damage was also dependent on time and oxygen concentration (35% lower at 53% O-2 saturation than at 105%). Fin condition was also affected by temperature: mean erosion index was...

Impacted marine environments lead to metal accumulation in edible marine fish, ultimately impairing human health. Nevertheless, metal accumulation is highly variable among marine fish species. In addition to ecological features, differences in bioaccumulation can be attributed to species-related physiological processes, which were investigated in two marine fish present in the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME), where natural and anthropogenic metal exposure occurs. The European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax and Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis were exposed for two months to two environmentally realistic dietary cadmium (Cd) doses before a depuration period. Organotropism (i.e., Cd repartition between organs) was studied in two storage...

Technique de culture pour les cotes bretonnes de l'algue alimentaire Undaria pinnatifida. Tableau de marché - étude économique ArchiMer
Perez, René; Kaas, Raymond; Barbaroux, Olivier; Arbault, Suzanne; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Moigne, J.
Introduction Starting in 1986, the ANVAR contributed well appreciated financial support in order to set up an original seeding technique characterized by artificial seeding production in a laboratory. This advantageous new way of seeding, i.e. independency from nature, yield increase and true competitiveness compared to traditional methods, nevertheless requires strict adherence to a procedure progressively elaborated during numerous trials in laboratory as well as at sea. The program ended in July 1989 after testing the cultivation protocol on a 2 hectare exploitation scale, in order to better detect what could be improved to greatly increase productivity, facilitate the work of the harvester and to better adapt the operating mode to environmental...

Effects of dispersant treated oil upon exploratory behaviour in juvenile European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Aimon, Cassandre; Lebigre, Christophe; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Le Floch, Stephane; Claireaux, Guy.
Accidental spills are pervasive pollution in aquatic ecosystems. Resorting to chemical dispersant is one of the most implemented strategies in response to oil spills, but it results in an increase in the bio-availability of oil compounds known to disturb fish neurosensory capacities and hence fish habitat use. While it has become well established that acute oil exposure can cause a range of physiological defects, sub-lethal consequences on animal behaviour have only received recent attention. Here we investigated the effect of an exposure to a 62 h- dispersant treated oil on the exploration tendency (exploratory activity, and avoidance of unfamiliar open areas) of juvenile European sea bass. Three different concentrations of chemically dispersed oil were...

Combined effects of ocean acidification and temperature on larval and juvenile growth, development and swimming performance of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Cominassi, Louise; Moyano, Marta; Claireaux, Guy; Howald, Sarah; Mark, Felix C.; Zambonino-infante, Jose-luis; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Peck, Myron A..
Ocean acidification and ocean warming (OAW) are simultaneously occurring and could pose ecological challenges to marine life, particularly early life stages of fish that, although they are internal calcifiers, may have poorly developed acid-base regulation. This study assessed the effect of projected OAW on key fitness traits (growth, development and swimming ability) in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae and juveniles. Starting at 2 days post-hatch (dph), larvae were exposed to one of three levels of PCO2 (650, 1150, 1700 μatm; pH 8.0, 7.8, 7.6) at either a cold (15°C) or warm (20°C) temperature. Growth rate, development stage and critical swimming speed (Ucrit) were repeatedly measured as sea bass grew from 0.6 to ~10.0 (cold) or ~14.0...

Effects of O-2 supersaturation on metabolism and growth in juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) ArchiMer
Person, Jeannine; Pichavant, Karine; Vacher, Coralie; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Severe, Armelle; Boeuf, Gilles.
Effects of O-2 supersaturation on metabolism and growth were studied in juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.). When fish were reared for 30 days in water containing O-2 at 147% or 223% air saturation, there were no significant differences in food intake, growth, food conversion or protein utilization compared to fish exposed to normoxia (100% air saturation in water outlet). Exposure to hyperoxia resulted in increased body fat deposition. Daily rates of O-2 consumption of resting fish were not affected by O-2-concentrations, and there were no significant differences in rates of nitrogenous excretion among fish exposed to the different O-2-concentrations. Turbot tolerated severe hyperoxia, 350% air saturation, for 10 days. There were changes in acid-base...

Comparative effects of long-term hypoxia on growth, feeding and oxygen consumption in juvenile turbot and European sea bass ArchiMer
Pichavant, Karine; Person, Jeannine; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Severe, Armelle; Le Roux, Annick; Boeuf, Gilles.
When juvenile turbot Scophthulmus maximus and sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax were fed to satiation, growth and food intake were depressed under hypoxia (3.2 +/- 0.3 and 4.5 +/- 0.2 mg O-2 l(-1)). However, no significant difference in growth was observed between fishes maintained in hypoxia and fed to satiation and fishes reared in normoxia (7.4 +/- 0.3 mg O-2 l(-1)) and fed restricted rations (same food intake of fishes at 3.2 mg O-2 l(-1)). Routine oxygen consumption of fishes fed to satiation was higher in normoxia than in hypoxia due to the decrease in food intake in the latter. Of the physiological parameters measured, no significant changes were observed in the two species maintained in hypoxia. This study confirms the significant interaction between...

Comparative growth and welfare in rainbow trout reared in recirculating and flow through rearing systems ArchiMer
Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Person, Jeannine; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
The objective of this study was to compare fish performance and welfare at different stocking densities in a recirculating system (RS) and a flow through system (FTS) under field conditions. During the 77 days experiment, the fish survival rate was high (99.3%) and stocking density increased from 57 to 98108 kg m(-3). No significant differences in growth were observed between RS and FTS until day 56. Later, growth decreased in the FTS, while it remained similar to the farm reference at 50 kg m(-3) in the RS. Final weight was 17% higher in RS than in FTS. The maximum carrying capacity of the RS was near 100 kg m(-3), limited by NO2 increase up to safe level at the end of the experiment, the maximum carrying capacity of the FTS was near 85 kg m(-3), probably...

Calcium response of KCl-excited populations of ventricular myocytes from the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax): a promising approach to integrate cell-to-cell heterogeneity in studying the cellular basis of fish cardiac performance ArchiMer
Ollivier, Helene; Marchant, James; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Servili, Arianna; Claireaux, Guy.
Climate change challenges the capacity of fishes to thrive in their habitat. However, through phenotypic diversity, they demonstrate remarkable resilience to deteriorating conditions. In fish populations, inter-individual variation in a number of fitness-determining physiological traits, including cardiac performance, is classically observed. Information about the cellular bases of inter-individual variability in cardiac performance is scarce including the possible contribution of excitation-contraction (EC) coupling. This study aimed at providing insight into EC coupling-related Ca2+ response and thermal plasticity in the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). A cell population approach was used to lay the methodological basis for identifying the...

An 84-day experiment assessed the combined effects of two fresh water quality levels (H: 1.71 +/- 0.15 mg O(2)l(-1) and 0.28 +/- 0.01 mg l(-1) total ammonia nitrogen (T-AN), L: 5.15 +/- 0.07 mg O2l(-1) and 0.54 +/- 0.01 mg T- AN l(-1)) and 3 stabilized stocking densities: 24.8 +/- 0.2, 74.2 +/- 0.5 and 120.0 +/- 0.9 kg m(-3)) on rainbow trout. Fish were fed using demand feeders with rewards proportional to stocking density. Mass increase was significantly affected by water quality and stocking density, being highest in H water and the lowest at 120 kg m(-3). There was no significant difference in final weight between 25 and 74 kg m(-3), but at 120 kg m(-3) it was 27% and 19% lower in H and L water respectively than at 25 kg m(-3). Programme qualité des huîtres creuses Crassostrea gigas en baie de Bourgneuf 2ème année, 1996 ArchiMer
Baud, Jean-pierre; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Palvadeau, Hubert.
Variability of oyster Crassostrea gigas quality was studied in winters 1995 and 1996. Landings per unit of production were estimated using the number of commercialized sanitary certification labels or/and the annual landings declared to the Veterinary Services. 998 oysters from 66 oyster farmers were described accordingly with 15 parameters easily measurable. Maximum variability like in 1995 was expressed by condition indices, macroscopic and morphologic factors. Theses results showed that reproductible and simple factors should described variability of oyster quality in the bay of Bourgneuf. However a new estimation of oyster quality should be involved in winter 1997 to acheive this study

The aim of this work was to investigate the catabolic process of three kinds of dietary carbohydrates in the gut of sea bass juveniles, with the possible contribution of the intestinal microbiota to the nutrition of the host, and the subsequent effects on intermediary metabolism. A first diet contained waxy maize (99% amylopectin), a highly digestible form of starch. A second diet was less quickly digestible due to its high amylose content of resistant starch. Two other diets contained fibre instead of starch, either only cellulose as control, or also other non-starch polysaccharides brought by lupin meal. The effect of the diets on the host confirmed previous results, with the stimulation of glucose storage in the liver in sea bass fed the starchy diets,...
