Fatty acid and fat-soluble antioxidant concentrations in milk from high- and low-input conventional and organic systems: seasonal variation Organic Eprints
Butler, Gillian; Nielsen, Jacob H.; Slots, Tina; Seal, Chris; Eyre, Mick D.; Sanderson, Roy; Leifert, Carlo.
BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed differences in fatty acid (FA) and antioxidant profiles between organic and conventional milk. However, they did not (a) investigate seasonal differences, (b) include non-organic, lowinput systems or (c) compare individual carotenoids, stereoisomers of α-tocopherol or isomers of conjugated linoleic acid. This survey-based study compares milk from three production systems: (i) high-input, conventional (10 farms); (ii) low-input, organic (10 farms); and (iii) low-input non-organic (5 farms). Samples were taken during the outdoor grazing (78 samples) and indoor periods (31 samples). RESULTS: During the outdoor grazing period, on average, milk from the low-input systems had lower saturated FAs, but higher mono- and...

Soil type, management history, and soil amendments influence the development of soil-borne (Rhizoctonia solani, Pythium ultimum) and air-borne (Phytophthora infestans, Hyaloperonospora parasitica) diseases Organic Eprints
Tamm, Lucius; Thürig, Barbara; Bruns, Christian; Fuchs, Jacques G.; Köpke, Ulrich; Laustela, Matias; Leifert, Carlo; Mahlberg, Nicole; Nietlispach, Bruno; Schmidt, Christoph; Weber, Felix; Fließbach, Andreas.
The impact of soil type, long-term soil management, and short-term fertility input strategies on the suppressiveness of soils against soil-borne (Ocimum basilicum – Rhizoctonia solani, Lepidium sativum – Pythium ultimum) as well as air-borne (Lycopersicon esculentum – Phytophthora infestans, Arabidopsis thaliana – Hyaloperonospora parasitica) diseases was studied. Soils from field trials established in five European sites with contrasting pedo-climatic conditions were examined. Sites included (i) a long-term management field trial comparing organic and conventional farming systems (DOK-trial, Therwil, Switzerland) (ii) a short-term fertility input field trial comparing mineral and organic matter fertilisation regimes (Bonn (BON), Germany) (iii) two...

Control strategies for late blight in organic potato production Organic Eprints
Zarb, John; Ghorbani, Reza; Juntharathep, Pintip; Shotton, Peter; Santos, Joanna; Wilcockson, Steve; Leifert, Carlo; Litterick, Audrey M; Bain, Ruaridh A; Wolfe, Martin.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Protective copper fungicides are currently used to control late blight in most organic production systems, but approval for their use in organic farming will be revoked in 2002. Evidence suggests that organic potato production will not be reliably economic in the absence of Cu. Current controls for late blight are reviewed including: variety selection/breeding for blight resistance, diversification strategies, agronomic strategies for the management of late blight, and alternative treatments to Cu-fungicides.

Impact of US Brown Swiss genetics on milk quality from low-input herds in Switzerland: Interactions with season Organic Eprints
Stergiadis, Sokratis; Bieber, Anna; Chatzidimitriou, Eleni; Franceschin, Enrica; Isensee, Anne; Rempelos, Leonidas; Baranski, Marcin; Maurer, Veronika; Cozzi, Giulio; Bapst, Beat; Butler, Gillian; Leifert, Carlo.
This study investigated the effect of, and interactions between, US Brown Swiss (BS) genetics and season on milk yield, basic composition and fatty acid profiles, from cows on low-input farms in Switzerland. Milk samples (n = 1,976) were collected from 1,220 crossbreed cows with differing proportions of BS, Braunvieh and Original Braunvieh genetics on 40 farms during winter-housing and summer-grazing. Cows with more BS genetics produced more milk in winter but not in summer, possibly because of underfeeding potentially high-yielding cows on low-input pasture-based diets. Cows with more Original Braunvieh genetics produced milk with more (i) nutritionally desirable eicosapentaenoic and docosapentaenoic acids, throughout the year, and (ii) vaccenic and...

Biologische Qualität: Mögliche Auswirkungen biologisch erzeugter Lebensmittel auf die menschliche Gesundheit Organic Eprints
Brandt, Kirsten; Lück, Lorna; Schmidt, Christoph; Seal, Chris; Leifert, Carlo.
The greatly increased market share of organic food, has prompted increasing interest in investigating whether there are actual differences in the effects of organic and conventional food on health. Previous studies have focussed on composition analyses and have therefore not been able to provide definitive proof for differences between these two food production systems in terms of long-term impact on human health. Also the designs of some of these studies were inadequate to provide proof for definite composition differences. There are virtually no human dietary intervention and cohort studies, which can provide definite proof for potential health impacts. When taking into account the present knowledge in nutrition, toxicology, physiology and ecological...

Survival of the biocontrol agents Coniothyrium minitans and Bacillus subtilis MBI 600 into pasteurised, sterilised and non-sterile soils Organic Eprints
Bennett, Amanda J.; Leifert, Carlo; Whipps, John M..
The biocontrol agents Coniothyrium minitans and Bacillus subtilis MBI 600 were added separately to three soil types that had been either sterilised, pasteurised or left non-sterile. Applied as a conidial suspension of 1 X 10(6) cfu g(-1) soil, C. minitans showed good survival in all sterilised, pasteurised and non-sterile soils, remaining at the numerical level at which it was applied for the duration of the 30 d experiment. Applied at a lower rate of 1 X 10(3) cfu g(-1) Soil, C Minitans proliferated in sterilised soil to numbers slightly over 1 X 10(6) cfu g(-1) Soil, whereas no increase was seen in pasteurised or non-sterile soils from this lower application rate. However, although C. minitans was not easily recovered on plates from non-sterile soil, it...

Higher antioxidant and lower cadmium concentrations and lower incidence of pesticide residues in organically grown crops: a systematic literature review and meta-analyses Organic Eprints
Baranski, Marcin; Srednicka-Tober, Dominika; Volakakis, Nikolaos; Seal, Chris; Sanderson, Roy; Stewart, Gavin B.; Benbrook, Charles; Biavati, Bruno; Markellou, Emilia; Giotis, Charilaos; Gromadzka-Ostrowska, Joanna; Rembiałkowska, Eva; Skwarło-Sonta, Krystyna; Tahvonen, Raija; Janovska, Dagmar; Niggli, Urs; Nicot, Philippe; Leifert, Carlo.
Demand for organic foods is partially driven by consumers' perceptions that they are more nutritious. However, scientific opinion is divided on whether there are significant nutritional differences between organic and non-organic foods, and two recent reviews have concluded that there are no differences. In the present study, we carried out meta-analyses based on 343 peer-reviewed publications that indicate statistically significant and meaningful differences in composition between organic and non-organic crops/crop-based foods. Most importantly, the concentrations of a range of antioxidants such as polyphenolics were found to be substantially higher in organic crops/crop-based foods, with those of phenolic acids, flavanones, stilbenes, flavones, flavonols...

QLIF Workshop 1: Product quality in organic and low input farming systems. Organic Eprints
Lueck, Lorna; Brandt, Kirsten; Seal, Chris; Rembialkovska, Ewa; Huber, Machtheld; Butler, Gillian; Bennett, Richard; Oughton, Liz; Nicholas, Philipa; Kretzschmar, Ursula; Sundrum, Albert; Leifert, Carlo.
QLIF researchers have quantified effects on food quality and health of products such as wheat, forage, apples, milk and meat. The workshop identifies factors which cause variation of the product quality for different commodities. Experimental findings on quality of organic and low input foods will be compared with consumer expectations and attitudes. For selected quality improving measures their economic impact will be analysed. Furthermore, the role of processing in maintaining or improving specific ‘organic’ qualities will be examined.

The content of bioactive compounds in rat experimental diets based on organic, low-input and conventional plant materials Organic Eprints
Rembialkowska, Ewa; Hallmann, Ewelina; Rusaczonek, Anna; Bennett, Richard; Brandt, Kirsten; Lueck, Lorna; Leifert, Carlo.
Rat feed based on raw plant materials was produced according to the nutritional recommendations for rat feeding trials. Rat feeds produced from crops grown under 4 different production systems were used: (a) organic, (b) conventional, (c) low input 1 (organic plant protection was used in combination with mineral fertilizers) and (d) low input 2 (conventional pest management and only organic fertilizers were used). The results showed that rat feeds prepared from the organically produced plants contained more total polyphenols and the nutritionally desirable, bioactive compound lutein. The main objective of analyzing bioactive compounds in the rat feed is to determine whether the differences in composition of feed materials from different production systems...

Demand for organic meat is partially driven by consumer perceptions that organic foods are more nutritious than non-organic foods. However, there have been no systematic reviews comparing specifically the nutrient content of organic and conventionally produced meat. In this study, we report results of a meta-analysis based on sixty-seven published studies comparing the composition of organic and non-organic meat products. For many nutritionally relevant compounds (e.g. minerals, antioxidants and most individual fatty acids (FA)), the evidence base was too weak for meaningful meta-analyses. However, significant differences in FA profiles were detected when data from all livestock species were pooled. Concentrations of SFA and MUFA were similar or slightly...

Improving quality and safety and maximizing benefits to consumers and producers Organic Eprints
Niggli, Urs; Leifert, Carlo.
Abstract - Improving the quality and safety and re-duction in cost in the European organic and ‘low in-put’ food supply chains (QLIF) is an Integrated Pro-ject under the 6th Framework Programme of the Euro-pean Commission which started in March 2004. After a two year period of research activities of the 31 partners, first preliminary results are available and will be presented during this congress. In our intro-ductory paper we try to develop an overall view on how the many work packages will strengthen the system approach of organic and ‘low input’ agricul-ture.

Impact of soil management practices on soil fertility and disease suppressiveness Organic Eprints
Tamm, Lucius; Bruns, Christian; Leifert, Carlo; Fuchs, Jacques G.; Thürig, Barbara; Specht, Nicole; Fliessbach, Andreas.
Soil management practices are targeted to provide adequate crop nutrition and to ensure durable soil fertility and to avoid negative environmental impacts. Soil management also aims to reduce pest and disease pressure on crops. Organic farming is believed to increase soil suppressiveness towards soil-borne diseases as well aerial diseases. In this paper we will discuss the potential of soil manage-ment as a tool to improve disease suppressiveness in practice.

Conjugated linoleic acid isomer concentrations in milk from high- and low-input management dairy systems Organic Eprints
Butler, Gillian; Collomb, Marius; Rehberger, Brita; Sanderson, Roy; Eyre, Mick D.; Leifert, Carlo.
BACKGROUND: Different conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers are known to have contrasting physiology or health effects and there is growing evidence that the profile of natural isomers in milk is influenced by the production system. This survey is the first to compare feeding regimes and concentrations of 14 CLA isomers inmilk from three production systems in the UK. RESULTS: Total CLA and seven isomers (including C18 : 2 c9t11 which comprised >80% of total) were significantly higher in milk from both organically certified and non certified low input (LI) systems compared with milk from conventional high input farms. Sampling date also affected concentrations of total CLA and nine isomers; being lowest in March and highest in August. Seasonal...

Zur Interaktion von Bodenfruchtbarkeitsmangement und sortenspezifischen Merkmalen auf den Befall mit Phytophthora infestans bei Kartoffeln Organic Eprints
Bruns, Christian; Finckh, Maria R.; Dlugowski, Susanne; Leifert, Carlo; Hospers, Monique.

Soil biological quality in short- and long-term field trials with conventional and organic fertility input types Organic Eprints
Fließbach, Andreas; Schmidt, Christoph; Bruns, Christian; Palmer, Mike; Nietlispach, Bruno; Leifert, Carlo; Tamm, Lucius.
Soils of the DOK trial and three other field trials with manure input were analysed for effects on soil biology. While long-term effects indicate a new steady state at the DOK trial site, differences at the other field trials suggest that fresh manure at the Bonn trial and chicken manure at the UK sites are at least temporarily advantageous, probably due to their relatively fast mineralization.

Effect of dairy management on quality characteristics of milk Organic Eprints
Slots, Tina; Leifert, Carlo; Butler, Gillian; Kristensen, Troels; Nielsen, Jacob Holm.
The objective of the study was (i) to compare the nutritional composition of milk produced in organic and conventional production systems taking into consideration: different proportions of grass or grass silage, maize silage and different amount of concentrate (cereals), and (ii) to define the variation in content of pro- and antioxidants in milk in relation to regional variation, feeding and season. The feeding regime from 25 farms from Denmark, 20 farms from Sweden and 25 farms from United Kingdom was reg-istered and milk samples were collected and analysed for the content of antioxidants and fatty acid compo-sition. The daily milk production was significantly higher in the conventional milk production systems in the two Scandinavian countries compared...

Effects of agricultural production systems and their components on protein profiles of potato tubers Organic Eprints
Lehesranta, Satu J.; Koistinen, Kaisa M.; Massat, Nathalie; Davies, Howard V.; Shepherd, Louise V. T.; McNicol, James W.; Cakmak, Ismail; Cooper, Julia; Lück, Lorna; Kärenlampi, Sirpa O.; Leifert, Carlo.
A range of studies have compared the level of nutritionally relevant compounds in crops from organic and nonorganic farming systems, but there is very limited information on the effect of farming systems and their key components on the protein composition of plants. We addressed this gap by quantifying the effects of different farming systems and key components of such systems on the protein profiles of potato tubers. Tuber samples were produced in the Nafferton factorial systems study, a group of long-term, replicated factorial field experiments designed to identify and quantify the effect of fertility management methods, crop protection practices and rotational designs used in organic, low input and conventional production systems. Protein profiles were...
