Debyser, J.; Lenoble, J.-p.; Augris, Claude; Cressard, Alain; Lemaire, J..

Oudard, E.; L'Hopitault, J.c.; Delattre, J.m.; Lemaire, J.; Janquin, M.a.; Degros, N.; Richard, A..

The differentiation of blood proteins during ontogeny in Sepia officinalis L. OMA
Decleir, W.; Lemaire, J.; Richard, A..
1. Blood from embryos, young animals and adult Sepia officinalis L. has been analysed by an ultramicroelectrophoretic technique.2. During the differentiation of a very small embryo into a 2-month-old animal, we have found eleven different protein fractions. 3. All these proteins have been identified as hemocyanin by histochemical tests. 4. The possible origin of the embryonic, young and adult hemocyanins is discussed.

Decleir, W.; Richard, A.; Lemaire, J.; Wolf, G..
The branchial gland from the cuttlefish (cephalopod mollusc) consists of extensively irrigated tissue, which shows a typical ultrastructure of protein-secreting cells: prominent nucleolus, elaborate system of granular endoplasmic reticulum and active Golgi apparatus. The possible hemopoietic role of the gland is sustained by our biochemical results.

Lemaire, J.; Richard, A.; Decleir, W..
The rudiments of the "hepatopancreas" appear early, in stage 20, as a pair of diverticula, given off from the midgut. The anterior part which lies against the yolk-sac will become the "liver". The growth of the liver exhibits a close relationship to the development of the inner yolk-sac. An electron microscopic study has been made of the hepatic epithelium at different embryonic stages. From stage 27, the cytologic aspects of the hepatic cell (presence of "balls", cytoplasm with well developed granular endoplasmic reticulum and free ribosoms...) give evidence of secretory activity. These ultrastructural features show that the liver becomes functional and allow us to think that it plays a part in the embryonic metabolism during the last stages of...

Van den Branden, C.; Richard, A.; Lemaire, J.; Decleir, W..
An electron microscopic study of the accessory nidamental glands from Sepia officinalis L. shows a secretory cycle in the epithelial cells and the presence of bacteria in the tubules of the gland. A correlation between sexual maturity, the color of the gland and the total number of symbiotic bacteria can be demonstrated. A biochemical study shows that the correlation of the gland is due to several carotenoid pigments. The most important of these is an orange-red xanthophyll that has been called Sepiaxanthine. It is probably formed in the bacteria as a result of the secretory activity of the epithelial glandular cells. This whole mechanism and the role of the bacteria and pigments need further research.
