A methodological framework for analysing landscape dynamics in relation to organic farming Organic Eprints
Levin, Gregor.
Since the mid-1980’ies Danish agriculture has been subject to a growing conversion into organic farming. Today roughly 6% of the cultivated land is farmed organically. Consequently, organic farming has a growing impact on the Danish agricultural landscape. It is generally expected that conversion to organic farming leads to landscapes with a rich and diverse nature. However, for organic farming in Denmark there exist no specific rules or guidelines concerning conservation and/or improvement of nature values at landscape scale. A positive effect of organic farming techniques on nature content within cultivated fields is relatively well documented. Yet, information about the relation between organic farming and nature values outside or surrounding...

Relationships between Danish organic farming and landscape composition Organic Eprints
Levin, Gregor.
This article presents an investigation of relationships between organic farming and landscape composition in Denmark. Landscape composition was analysed in terms of density of uncultivated landscape elements (I), number of land uses per hectare (II), diversity of land use (III) and mean field size (IV). Two analytical approaches were used. The first was based on an examination of the national agricultural registers for 1998, 2001 and 2004. The second approach used aerial photo interpretation for an analysis of 72 conventional and 40 organic farms within three sample areas for 1982, 1995 and 2002. The national analysis indicated that organic farming has a direct effect on landscape composition. In 2001, organic farms were characterised by a higher number of...

The effects of organic farming on the landscape: Reflections on a Ph.D. project in the context of values and ideologies Organic Eprints
Levin, Gregor.
Human behaviour and action is never value-free and will always in different ways relate to values and ideologies. Within natural science, the integration of personal attitudes and feelings is often looked down on. Paradoxically, this claim on objectivity can in itself be seen a central value or ideology of natural science. Consequently, values and ideologies, whether linked to our individual thinking or influenced by our socio-cultural surroundings, will always influence our way of performing research. With this in mind, I try to reflect on my own research project in the context of values and ideologies. By going through a number of written documents, which are or have been connected to my project, I outline both external and my own internal values and...

Structural development in Danish agriculture and its implications for farmland nature Organic Eprints
Levin, Gregor; Langer, Vibeke; Frederiksen, Pia.
During the last decades, development of Danish agriculture was characterised by concentration of land on fewer and larger farms and consequently increasing farm sizes. On basis of three case studies supplemented by national data we explore relationships between farm size change and farmland nature in terms of field sizes and hedgerow densities. Data point to a significant relationship between farm enlargement and increases in mean field sizes. Furthermore, mean field size is negatively related to densities of hedgerows. For the coming decades, scenarios for Danish agriculture point to a continued increase in farm sizes. We argue for an increased focus on the effects of a continued scale enlargement on farmland nature in terms of changes in field size...

Studying the effect of organic farming on rural landscapes: Issues of methodology and scale Organic Eprints
Levin, Gregor.
Implying changes in land use practices, the conversion from conventional to organic farming has a potential effect on the spatial arrangement of land cover and thus on structure and content of natural and semi-natural landscape elements. Several studies point to that organic farming has a positive effect on the content of natural and semi-natural elements in Danish and other European landscapes. However, these findings seem biased by inadequate sampling methods and narrow spatial and temporal study scales. On the contrary, the few studies using more comprehensive samples and broader scales, indicate that variations in the content of natural and semi-natural landscape elements are influenced by regional and local biophysical variations in relation to the...

Farm size and landscape composition in relation to landscape changes in Denmark Organic Eprints
Levin, Gregor.
This paper explores relationships between farm size and landscape composition in terms of densities of uncultivated landscape elements and sizes of agricultural fields. The study is based on national agricultural registers for Denmark and on aerial photo interpretation of three study areas, representing different Danish landscape types. Results indicate significantly smaller fields and significantly higher densities of unculti-vated landscape elements on small farms (<25ha). At national level, current differences between small and large farms are to some extent caused by landscape changes between 1998 and 2004. Analyses of the study areas indicate that current differences between small and large farms mainly evolved between 1982 and 2002, while the...

A holistic framework for the analysis of landscape changes following organic farming Organic Eprints
Levin, Gregor.
In this paper I reflect on the design of an appropriate methodological framework for my Ph.D.-project. Holism is widely recognised a vital concept for research on human-environment relationships. This is especially the case when agriculture’s impact on land-scapes is studied. Thus, for my study on landscape changes following conversion to or-ganic farming, I discuss holism in terms of its relevance in principal and in terms of its actual practicability. I recognise that a holistic angle is decisive in order to analyse and understand the spatial and temporal dynamics of the landscape and the multitude forces and processes that have a bearing on them. Keeping a general holistic concept in mind can elucidate factors and processes that might be overlooked in a...

Dynamics of Danish Agricultural Landscapes and the Roles of Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Levin, Gregor.
Agriculture manages about 2/3 of the Danish land area. As a consequence, agricultural land use consequently has a major influence on the appearance of the Danish landscape in terms of its spatial composition and structure. Alterations of agricultural practices always imply potential changes in landscape composition and structure. Qua its definition and ensuing standards, organic farming embodies a particular kind of agricultural production. Consequently, the conversion to organic farming implies potential changes in the spatial composition and structure of the landscape. As organic farming occupies approx. 6% of all agricultural land in Denmark, it is relevant to investigate potential effects of this conversion on the landscape. Furthermore, within the...
