Atypical bovine interstitial pneumonia in a semi-intensive beef cattle system Ciência Rural
Coelho,Ana Carolina Barreto; Oliveira,Plínio Aguiar; Santos,Bianca Lemos dos; Estima-Silva,Pablo; Scheid,Haide Valeska; Leal,Sofia del Carmen Bonilla de Souza; Marcolongo-Pereira,Clairton; Schild,Ana Lucia.
ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study was to describe an outbreak of atypical interstitial pneumonia affecting 15 Angus cattle aged 7-30 months in the south of Rio Grande do Sul. The clinical course of the disease was approximately 1-3 days. The cattle were kept in the native field and had received feed containing the remains of wafers from a food factory before the outbreak. Clinical signs included dyspnea and abdominal breathing, with a clinical evolution period of up to 3 days. Nine animals presented apathy and respiratory difficulty and died within 24h, while three animals exhibited a clinical evolution period of 36-48h. Three other animals died without any clinical signs. The main macroscopic lesions were observed in the lungs, which did not collapse...

Rhododendron simsii poisoning in goats in Southern Brazil Ciência Rural
Vargas Junior,Sérgio Farias; Marcolongo-Pereira,Clairton; Halinski-Silveira,Dênis; Grecco,Fabiane Borelli; Raffi,Margarida Buss; Schild,Ana Lucia; Sallis,Eliza Simone Viégas.
This study describes the natural poisoning of goats by Rhododendron simsii in Southern Brazil. Five of eight goats died after ingesting branches of plants, which were pruned and placed near the goats. Clinical signs observed were restlessness, shrill bleating, profuse regurgitation, looking and kicking at the flank, a loss of balance, irregular gait, staggering, and opisthotonos. At necropsy or histopathology affected goats had not showed lesions. Two goats were fed with 21.5g kg-1 bw and 30g kg-1 bw of fresh leaves of R. simsii. Both goats developed signs similar to those naturally affected goats. These findings indicated that R. simsii is highly toxic and lethal to goats.

Equine dermatopathies in southern Brazil: a study of 710 cases Ciência Rural
Assis-Brasil,Nathalia Dode de; Marcolongo-Pereira,Clairton; Stigger,Adriana Lucke; Fiss,Letícia; Santos,Bianca Lemos; Coelho,Ana Carolina Barreto; Sallis,Eliza Simone Viégas; Fernandes,Cristina Gevehr; Schild,Ana Lucia.
A retrospective study of equine skin diseases diagnosed in the Laboratório Regional de Diagnóstico, Faculdade de Veterinária, Universidade Federal de Pelotas was conducted between 1978 and 2013. The necropsy and biopsy protocols for horses received for diagnosis were reviewed to determine the prevalence of dermatopathies in southern Brazil. The most prevalent skin diseases in decreasing order were: sarcoid [234/710 (32.9%)], exuberant granulation tissue [81/710 (11.4%)], pythiosis [67/710 (9.4%)], squamous cell carcinoma [55/710 (7.7%)], papillomatosis [33/710 (4.6%)] and habronemiasis [30/710 (4.2%)]. Other skin lesions accounted for 25.3% of all cases studied. The Crioulo breed was the most prevalent [310/710 (43.6%)]. Horses aged between 2-5 years old...

Lissencephaly-pachygyria and cerebellar hypoplasia in a calf Ciência Rural
Santos,Bianca Lemos dos; Damé,Maria Cecília Florisbal; Coelho,Ana Carolina Barreto; Oliveira,Plínio Aguiar; Marcolongo-Pereira,Clairton; Schild,Ana Lucia.
ABSTRACT: A case of lissencephaly-pachygyria and cerebellar hypoplasia diagnosed in a Charolais x Tabapuã calf is described. The calf presented since birth, clinical signs characterized by apathy, prolonged recumbency, tremors of the head and neck, ataxia, hypermetria, difficulty walking, blindness and swelling of the joints of the four limbs. Due to the unfavorable prognosis, the animal was euthanized and necropsied at 34 days of age. At necropsy, a rudimentary development of the brain folds (gyri) and grooves (sulci) was observed, and the cerebellum was hypoplastic. The cut surface of the brain exhibited thickening of the gray matter (pachygyria) in the frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital cortices and narrowing of the white matter. In the organs of...

Experimental poisoning by Niedenzuella stannea in cattle and corresponding detection of monofluoroacetate Ciência Rural
Arruda,Felipe Peixoto de; Caldeira,Flávio Henrique Bravim; Ducatti,Kássia Renostro; Bezerra,Kalinne Stephanie; Marcolongo-Pereira,Clairton; Lee,Stephen Tomas; Cook,Daniel; Riet-Correa,Franklin; Colodel,Edson Moleta.
ABSTRACT: In Brazil sodium monofluoroacetate (MFA) containing plants are represented by 16 species that belong to three principle genera: Palicourea ( Rubiaceae ), Amorimia ( Malpighiaceae ), and Tanaecium ( Bignoniaceae ). These plants can cause acute cardiac failure often referred to as sudden death syndrome. The objective of this paper was to determine if N. stannea contains MFA and to report the clinical signs and pathology of cattle experimentally poisoned by this plant. MFA was detected in all N. stannea plant parts except mature leaves. Niedenzuella stannea was dosed to cattle at single doses of 15-30g kg-1 bw. Clinical signs and pathology observed were similar to those reported by other MFA-containing plants. Animals showed marked tachycardia,...

Pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema in a rabid bull Ciência Rural
Marcolongo-Pereira,Clairton; Stigger,Adriana; Fiss,Letícia; Coelho,Ana Carolina; Santos,Bianca; Junior,Sergio Vargas; Schild,Ana Lucia.
This report describes pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema in a bull with paralytic rabies. The bull displayed severe swelling in the head, neck, chest and forelimbs extending to the ventrum, including the prepuce, 7 days after the development of neurological signs. At necropsy, extensive subcutaneous emphysema was observed in the neck region, abdominal wall and proximal forelimbs. The lungs failed to collapse and had severe emphysema with bullae. Rabies was suspected due to an ongoing outbreak at the farm and was confirmed by histologic lesions and immunohistochemistry. Similar to humans, pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema should be considered as an unusual complication of rabies in cattle.
