Multiple Generation Farm Households: What Determines Primacy in Management? AgEcon
Remble, Amber A.; Keeney, Roman; Marshall, Maria I..
This study identifies factors that influence primacy between generations in the management structure of U.S. family farms. The paper fills an important gap in the farm succession literature by exploring succession (in management of the farm) as an incremental process. Estimation with cross-sectional data from the USDAERS’ Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS) and a limited dependent variable model is used to explain the decision for older generation operators to retain primary farm management duties with a junior operator serving a secondary role. We identify a number of statistically significant attributes that explain variation in the elder farmer’s role (primary versus secondary) in management of the farm. Our results suggest that transferring...

Fresh-Cut Melon - The Money Is in the Juice AgEcon
Mayen, Carlos D.; Marshall, Maria I.; Lusk, Jayson L..
Fruit is an important component of the food industry in the United States, and “fresh-cut” products are an increasing portion of that consumption. We found that packaging and juice content played a significant role in the choices Indiana consumers made when purchasing fresh-cut melon products. Brand was not as important as the other fresh-cut melon attributes. Indiana consumers had a clear dislike for cup-shaped transparent packages compared with tamper-proof, bowl, and squared packages. However, they were willing to pay a premium for packages that have no fruit juices on the bottom.

An Evaluation of Market Characteristics of Indiana Farmers' Markets AgEcon
Hofmann, Christa; Dennis, Jennifer H.; Marshall, Maria I..
Nationally, the number of operating farmers' markets has increased 111% in the past ten years from 1,755 markets to 3,706 from 1994 to 2004 (AMS, 2006). Indiana's farmers' markets has increased at double the rate in the same time frame. An internet and mail census was sent to market masters to assess operational procedures and factors that influence customer and vendor participation in the market. A two-stage least squares model was estimated for the vendor and customer model. In Equation 1.1, paying fees and the number of customers present were the two variables that had a significant, positive influence on vendor participation. In Equation 1.2, the presence of WIC, number of products available, the absence or presence of live music, absence or presence...

WHAT DO WE REALLY KNOW ABOUT ENTREPRENEURS? AN ANALYSIS OF NASCENT ENTREPRENEURS IN INDIANA AgEcon
Marshall, Maria I.; Peake, Whitney O..
A great deal of time and effort has been dedicated to entrepreneurship research regarding the characteristics of entrepreneurs. However, characteristics of entrepreneurs in the gestation period have received less attention due to the difficulty of obtaining data from potential entrepreneurs at this stage in the entrepreneurial process. The purpose of this study is twofold. First we review the literature to determine key characteristics of entrepreneurs. Then utilizing a sample of Indiana entrepreneurs in the gestation stage, we conduct an empirical analysis. In addition to the key components identified through the literature review, in the empirical analysis additional variables are considered that we believe will be major determinants of business start-up.

Does Experience Determine Performance? A Meta-Analysis on the Experience-Performance Relationship AgEcon
Peake, Whitney O.; Marshall, Maria I..
The impact of experience on entrepreneurial performance has been widely tested. Although experience is expected to positively impact performance, results are varied. This research synthesizes the current literature by determining systematic sources of variation through both exploratory and ordered probit analyses. Results reveal that start date for data collection and form of experience tested pose a major impact on the probability of obtaining a positive estimate for the experience-performance relationship. This research further emphasizes the need for tightened standards across the experience-performance literature in order to equip both academics and practitioners with better information.

THE EFFECT OF HUMAN AND FINANCIAL CAPITAL ON THE ENTREPRENEURIAL PROCESS: AN URBAN-RURAL COMPARISON OF ENTREPRENEURS IN INDIANA AgEcon
Marshall, Maria I.; Samal, Ananya.
Entrepreneurship is a crucial ingredient of economic growth and job creation. Small business start-ups are currently of great interest to many state and local governments including Indiana. With the growing need to stimulate small business development, it is necessary to understand the obstacles faced by entrepreneurs as they attempt to start a business. The results have implications for small business development and university related centers and how they design programs to effectively meet the needs of entrepreneurs participating in small business start-ups. More explicitly, the results show that targeting educational programs by socio-economic and demographic segments would have lead to a better chance of programming success

ENDOGENOUS PROTECTION IN THE MEXICAN CORN AND SORGHUM MARKET AgEcon
Marshall, Maria I.; Marsh, Thomas L..
Trade relations between the United States (U.S) and Mexico are increasingly interrelated and important ever since the ratification of NAFTA in 1994. With the advent of NAFTA, tariffs on many agricultural products were lowered or are in the process of being lowered. Mexico implements a tariff-rate quota for corn which is to be phased out by 2009. This quota is divided among the various Mexican corn importers with "cupos", which are import permits. Import permits are administrative trade barriers that can be defined as any obstacle that appears and disappears as market conditions change. It is widely recognized in the literature that administrative trade barriers create numerous obstacles to the international exchange of agricultural products. In this...

Human Capital and its Effect on Entrepreneurship: A Key Component or Much Ado About Nothing? AgEcon
Marshall, Maria I.; Peake, Whitney O..
Understanding the impact of human capital on small business development is crucial to both entrepreneurs and the entities that serve them. The objective of this study, therefore, is to determine the impact of human capital on entrepreneurs who are approaching firm birth, in order to provide entrepreneurs, small business development centers, and universities with the best resources possible. One hundred twenty-eight entrepreneurs in the gestation period have been contacted through workshops held by Purdue University and the Indiana Small Business Development Center. Sixty-five of those entrepreneurs agreed to participate in a two year study with follow-up information gathered at two month intervals, giving a current response rate of approximately 51%....

Family Business Decision-Making: Factors and Influences on Choosing a Successor AgEcon
Foltz, Renee D.; Marshall, Maria I..
This paper investigates the factors that lead a family business to name a successor for the business, as the succession process often begins with naming a successor. We further separate family businesses into farm and non-farm businesses to compare and contrast the results. The factors used in the probit regression are clustered into three groups: business factors, family factors, and individual factors. Identifying the barriers that family businesses face when naming a successor will help Extension and other small and family business consulting agencies and organizations to formulate a guide to assist families when working through this process.

Is Degree of Rurality More Crucial to Small Firm Births than Access to Incubators? An Analysis of States' Relative Efficiencies in Promoting the Birth of Small Firms AgEcon
Peake, Whitney O.; Marshall, Maria I..
Economic development via firm birth has recently been an important topic for many state governments. However, ways in which state governments can influence firm births are not obvious, and their efficiency in fostering firm births in comparison to their peers is even less so. Focusing on the birth of small firms in the contiguous US, regression analysis and non-parametric efficiency testing are employed to determine both the expenditures state governments can target to indirectly promote small firm birth and their relative efficiency in utilizing these expenditures. The regression results reveal three significant expenditure inputs and one significant controlling factor in determining firm birth, while the efficiency tests regarding states' use of these...

WHO CHOOSES TO OWN A MANUFACTURED HOME? AgEcon
Marshall, Maria I..
Little research has been conducted on the choice of dwelling by U.S. homeowners. Few studies have included manufactured housing into the dwelling choices available to homeowners. This study focuses on the effects of demographic and socioeconomic variables on a household's choice to own a manufactured home. A multinomial logit model was used to determine what type of households chooses to own a manufactured home when other traditional dwelling choices are available. I found that income and education play a major role in dwelling choice.

What Did They Do with the Money? An Analysis of Tobacco Buyout Recipients’ Expenditure Choices AgEcon
Marshall, Maria I.; Pushkarskaya, Helen N..
There are many expenditure options available to farmers who received a tobacco buyout check. A multinomial probit model is used to analyze how farmer, business, and household characteristics influence the choice of expenditure option. Results of the study show that farmers tend to use the tobacco buyout payments as a special income account which they spend in a focused manner, and their expenditure choices vary by gender and by age groups. Findings also reveal that farmers who plan to stay in tobacco production are more likely to invest in new or existing on-farm activities.

Has the "Farm Problem" Disappeared? A Comparison of Household and Self-Employment Income Levels of the Farm and Nonfarm Self-Employed AgEcon
Peake, Whitney O.; Marshall, Maria I..
This study tests the impact of household and demographic factors on the economic well-being of the farm and nonfarm self-employed using data from the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series. Parametric and nonparametric techniques are used to test for statistical differences in self-employment and household income levels. Further, household and demographic factors are tested for their effect on self-employment income using a censored tobit regression model. The farm self-employed report significantly higher levels of self-employment income. Results reveal that several household and demographic factors significantly impact self-employment income levels for the farm and nonfarm self-employed, with key differences in impacts.

How Beneficial is Tourism? An Analysis of the Economic Impact of Tourism in Il N'gwesi, Kenya AgEcon
DeVeau, Vanessa; Marshall, Maria I..
This paper is a study of the economic effects of tourism in Il N'gwesi, Kenya. This group ranch has been greatly influenced by tourism and conservation efforts in recent years. It neighbors several conservation and tourism centers and in 1996 members set aside 80% of their communal land for a conservation area and initiated a community run Eco Lodge. This paper studies the potential negative effects of tourism on Il N'gwesi as well as which variables impact conservation friendly expenditure decisions. A statistical analysis reveals that group ranch members perceive that there had been inflation in the prices of land, food, and goods and services. However, close to 100 percent of households do not believe that the inflation is due to the Eco Lodge. A...

Lump Sum versus Annuity: Choices of Kentucky Farmers during the Tobacco Buyout Program AgEcon
Pushkarskaya, Helen N.; Marshall, Maria I..
Our study uses the data collected during the implementation of the tobacco buyout program in Kentucky to evaluate how rural households, diverse in income, age, family structure, location, education level, and other characteristics, made a choice between annuities and a lump-sum payment. Subjects in our field experiment did not have to retire or change their employment, as did subjects in many field studies of the choice between annuities and lump-sum payments, which allowed us to evaluate the relationship between the option choice and a decision whether to exit the tobacco market. Our results suggest that while discounted utility theory gives acceptable predictions of the farmers’ behavior, other factors have to be taken into consideration. First, there...
