Rapid spatiotemporal variations in rift structure during development of the Corinth Rift, central Greece ArchiMer
Nixon, Casey W.; Mcneill, Lisa C.; Bull, Jonathan M.; Bell, Rebecca E.; Gawthorpe, Robert L.; Henstock, Timothy J.; Christodoulou, Dimitris; Ford, Mary; Taylor, Brian; Sakellariou, Dimitris; Ferentinos, George; Papatheodorou, George; Leeder, Mike R.; Collier, Richard E. L. I.; Goodliffe, Andrew M.; Sachpazi, Maria; Kranis, Haralambos.
The Corinth Rift, central Greece, enables analysis of early rift development as it is young (<5Ma) and highly active and its full history is recorded at high resolution by sedimentary systems. A complete compilation of marine geophysical data, complemented by onshore data, is used to develop a high-resolution chronostratigraphy and detailed fault history for the offshore Corinth Rift, integrating interpretations and reconciling previous discrepancies. Rift migration and localization of deformation have been significant within the rift since inception. Over the last circa 2Myr the rift transitioned from a spatially complex rift to a uniform asymmetric rift, but this transition did not occur synchronously along strike. Isochore maps at circa 100 kyr...

3-D active source tomography around Simeulue Island offshore Sumatra: Thick crustal zone responsible for earthquake segment boundary ArchiMer
Tang, Genyang; Barton, Penny J.; Mcneill, Lisa C.; Henstock, Timothy J.; Tilmann, Frederik; Dean, Simon M.; Jusuf, Muhammad D.; Djajadihardja, Yusuf S.; Permana, Haryadi; Klingelhoefer, Frauke; Kopp, Heidrun.
We present a detailed 3-D P-wave velocity model obtained by first-arrival travel-time tomography with seismic refraction data in the segment boundary of the Sumatra subduction zone across Simeulue Island, and an image of the top of the subducted oceanic crust extracted from depth-migrated multi-channel seismic reflection profiles. We have picked P-wave first arrivals of the air-gun source seismic data recorded by local networks of ocean-bottom seismometers, and inverted the travel-times for a 3-D velocity model of the subduction zone. This velocity model shows an anomalous zone of intermediate velocities between those of oceanic crust and mantle that is associated with raised topography on the top of the oceanic crust. We interpret this feature as a...

Young rifts are shaped by combined tectonic and surface processes and climate, yet few records exist to evaluate the interplay of these processes over an extended period of early rift-basin development. Here, we present the longest and highest resolution record of sediment flux and paleoenvironmental changes when a young rift connects to the global oceans. New results from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 381 in the Corinth Rift show 10s-100s of kyr cyclic variations in basin paleoenvironment as eustatic sea level fluctuated with respect to sills bounding this semi-isolated basin, and reveal substantial corresponding changes in the volume and character of sediment delivered into the rift. During interglacials, when the basin was...

A complete structural model and kinematic history for distributed deformation in the Wharton Basin ArchiMer
Stevens, Duncan E.; Mcneill, Lisa C.; Henstock, Timothy J.; Delescluse, Matthias; Chamot-rooke, Nicolas; Bull, Jonathan M..
The equatorial eastern Indian Ocean hosts a diffuse plate boundary, where widespread deformation accommodates the relative motion between the Indian, Australian and Capricorn sub-plates. We integrate IODP Expedition 362 borehole data, which for the first time provides an accurate, ground-truthed chronostratigraphy of the sedimentary sequence east of the Ninety East Ridge (NER), with 2D seismic reflection profiles and multibeam bathymetry to assess the styles of faulting between the NER and the Sunda subduction zone, timing of activity and comparison with physical and rheological properties. We identify four distinct fault sets east of the NER in the northern Wharton Basin. N-S (350-010°) orientated faults, associated with the N-S fracture zones formed at...
