Fish require diets containing 30 to 55% of crude protein and an amino acid supply precisely adapted to meeting the needs for optimal growth. Fish meal is an ideal protein source for aquafeed because it has a high protein level (65% to 72%) with an ideal proportion of all ten indispensable amino acids that meet the requirements of all fish species. The present study was initiated to analyze the regulation of hepatic G6Pase expression by dietary carbohydrates in rainbow trout. The first step in our study was the identification of a partial G6Pase cDNA in rainbow trout that was highly homologous to that of mammals. Genetic adaptation to dietary environments is a key process in the evolution of natural populations and is of great interest in animal breeding. In fish farming, the use of fish meal and fish oil has been widely challenged, leading to the rapidly increasing use of plant-based products in feed. Effect of long-term feeding with a plant protein mixture based diet on growth and body/fillet quality traits of large rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) ArchiMer

Two diets based oil fish meal (FM) or oil a mixture of plant protein sources supplemented with free amino acids (PP) were fed to rainbow trout having a mean initial body weight of 162.5 g reared at 17 +/- 1 degreesC for 24 weeks to evaluate the effect of plant protein sources oil fish growth, morphological and body quality traits. The enzyme glucokinase (GK) (EC 2.7.1.1) plays an important role in the control of glucose homeostasis. Qualitative and/or quantitative variations in GK enzyme have been postulated by previous studies to explain why dietary carbohydrate utilisation is lower in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) than in common carp (Cyprinus carpio). In this study, we report the isolation and characterisation of a full-length cDNA coding for GK in these teleosts. For developing efficient diets, two sets of experiments examined whether the use and allocation of dietary protein can be traced by labelling with stable isotopes (N-15 and C-13) in two culture fish (Oncorhynchus mykiss and Sparus aurata). In the first experiment, natural abundance and tissue distribution of these isotopes were determined, by measuring the delta C-13 and delta N-15 values by isotopic ratio mass spectrometry, in fingerlings (14-17 g) adapted to diets differing in the percentage of fish meal replacement by plant protein sources. A first insight into genotype x diet interactions in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L. 1756) in the context of plant-based diet use ArchiMer

This preliminary study assessed genotype x diet interaction in late growth of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fed with either a fish meal (FM)- or a fish oil (FO)-based diet (M) or an all-plant-based (PB) diet. A total of 550 fish from 224 families were reared together and tagged. DNA was sampled and microsatellites were used to assign parentage. When fish weight was 192 +/- 54 g, two tanks were fed with M (FM: 100%; FO: 100%) and two others with PB (FM: 0% and FO: 0%). Facing the finite size of fisheries resources, the important increase of aquaculture production during the last decades has led to the evolution of feed composition with an increasing substitution of fish meal and fish oil with terrestrial plant products. During the same period, selective breeding has been developed in fish and major improvements were achieved on growth, resulting in 4 to 20 % gain per fish generation (Olesen, Gjedrem, Bentsen et al. A lean muscle line (L) and a fat muscle line (F) of rainbow trout were established (Quillet et al., 2005) by a two-way selection for muscle lipid content performed on pan-size rainbow trout using a non-destructive measurement of muscle lipid content (Distell Fish Fat Meter®). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the consequences of this selective breeding on flesh quality of pan size (290 g) diploid and triploid trout after three generations of selection. We analysed the postprandial hepatic transcriptomes of rainbow trout fed the two diets 8 h after feeding. High energy extruded diets were formulated to contain the same level of protein supplied either by soy protein concentrate (SPC) or fish meal. Three experiments were performed in order to measure voluntary feed intake and feed waste, faecal losses and soluble losses of nitrogen and phosphorus in rainbow trout (average body weight: 100 g). Voluntary feed intake and growth performance of fish fed with demand feeders were not different when diets contained 0, 50 or 75 % SPC instead of fish meal. Does broodstock nutritional history affect the response of progeny to different first-feeding diets? A whole-body transcriptomic study of rainbow trout alevins ArchiMer

The whole-body transcriptome of trout alevins was characterised to investigate the effects of long-term feeding of rainbow trout broodstock females a diet free of fishmeal and fish oil on the metabolic capacities of progeny. Effects were studied before first feeding and after 3 weeks of feeding diets containing different proportions of marine and plant ingredients. Feeding alevins plant-based diets resulted in lower fish body weight, irrespective of maternal nutritional history.
