Underlying reasons of the controversy over adverse effects of Bt toxins on lady beetle and lacewing larvae Organic Eprints
Hilbeck, Angelika; Meier, Matthias; Trtikova, Miluse.
We outline important underlying reasons that fuel the decades-long controversy over adverse effects of Bt toxins expressed in genetically modified plants on beneficial, nontarget organisms. Inconsistent evaluation standards and asymmetrical levels of scrutiny applied to studies reporting significant adverse effects compared to those finding no adverse effects are described using the examples of the green lacewing (Chrysoperla carnea) and the twospotted lady beetle (Adalia bipunctata). Additionally, the chosen style and concerted nature of the rather confrontational counter study and responses in the lady beetle cases bear striking similarities to other reported examples in the field of biosafety/risk science of genetically modified plants and to other...

Modell zur Quantifizierung des Energieverbrauchs und der Treibhausgasemissionen von Biobetrieben Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Meier, Matthias; Kuhn, Till; Jud, Katja; Oehen, Bernadette; Gattinger, Andreas; Stolze, Matthias.

Climate Change Adaptation Through Science-Farmer-Policy Dialogue in Mali Organic Eprints
Bautze, Lin; Nicolay, Gian L.; Meier, Matthias; Gattinger, Andreas; Müller, Adrian.
Climate change increases the number of risks for agricultural production in arid and semiarid regions, especially in Western Africa. Smallholder farmers are particularly vulnerable to climate change risks. These risks affect their socioeconomic situation, as well as the local food sector value chain in general. Therefore, their food security is threatened if smallholder farming structures do not adapt to them. Thus, effective climate change adaptation measures for smallholders are essential and should be implemented without delay. However, success hinges on the acceptance of the promoted measures among various stakeholders. Thus, their acceptance needs to be assessed before promoting. The project “The potential of sustainable land-use systems to promote...

Life cycle assessments of organic foods Organic Eprints
Meier, Matthias; Hörtenhuber, Stefan; Schader, Christian; Stolze, Matthias.
The fact sheet presents the tool of the product-related life cycle assessment as it is currently used for assessing ecological sustainability in the food and farming sector. Based on internal and external calculations, the authors analyse the meaningfulness of comparative life cycle assessment of food from extensive production systems with those from more intensive production systems. In the interest of a comprehensive environmental assessment of food production, the authors propose substantial extensions of the existing method at different levels.

Evaluating On-Farm Biodiversity: A Comparison of Assessment Methods Organic Eprints
Gabel, Vanessa M.; Home, Robert; Stöckli, Sibylle; Meier, Matthias; Stolze, Matthias; Köpke, Ulrich.
Strategies to stop the loss of biodiversity in agriculture areas will be more successful if farmers have the means to understand changes in biodiversity on their farms and to assess the effectiveness of biodiversity promoting measures. There are several methods to assess on-farm biodiversity but it may be difficult to select the most appropriate method for a farmer’s individual circumstances. This study aims to evaluate the usability and usefulness of four biodiversity assessment methods that are available to farmers in Switzerland. All four methods were applied to five case study farms, which were ranked according to the results. None of the methods were able to provide an exact statement on the current biodiversity status of the farms, but each method...

ProPIG - Organic pig health, welfare and environmental impact across Europe Organic Eprints
Rudolph, Gwendolyn; Bochicchio, Davide; Butler, Gillian; Dippel , Sabine; Dourmad, Jean Yves; Edwards , Sandra; Früh, Barbara; Illmann, Gudrun; Meier, Matthias; Prunier, Armelle; Rousing, Tine; Salomon, Eva; Silerova, Jitka; Sorensen, J.T.; Urban, Jiri; Vertes, Francois; Winckler, Christoph; Leeb, Christine.
Organic production is perceived by consumers as being superior in animal welfare and sustainability and the demand for organic pork products is slowly increasing. Within the past ten years a variety of husbandry and management systems have been developed across the EU, ranging from farms with pigs outdoors all year round using local breeds to farms with housed pigs having concrete outside runs and using conventional breeds (CorePIG, Rousing et al, 2011). So far, mainly clinical parameters have been used to describe the health situation on organic pig farms, identifying some key problems, such as weaning diarrhoea and piglet mortality. Organic pig production is - amongst others - characterised through a holistic approach based on the EU Regulation (EC) No...

Environmental risk assessment of genetically modified plants - concepts and controversies Organic Eprints
Hilbeck, Angelika; Meier, Matthias; Römbke, Jörg; Jänsch, Stephan; Teichmann, Hanka; Tappeser, Beatrix.
Background and purpose: In Europe, the EU Directive 2001/18/EC lays out the main provisions of environmental risk assessment (ERA) of genetically modified (GM) organisms that are interpreted very differently by different stakeholders. The purpose of this paper is to: (a) describe the current implementation of ERA of GM plants in the EU and its scientific shortcomings, (b) present an improved ERA concept through the integration of a previously developed selection procedure for identification of non-target testing organisms into the ERA framework as laid out in the EU Directive 2001/18/EC and its supplement material (Commission Decision 2002/623/EC), (c) describe the activities to be carried out in each component of the ERA and (d) propose a hierarchical...

Status Quo der Biodiversitätsbewertung in Ökobilanzen Organic Eprints
Geier, Vanessa; Meier, Matthias; Köpke, Ulrich.
During the last years the demand and use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for calculating and comparing the ecological impacts of agricultural products has increased. However, within LCA important environmental impacts of agriculture, for instance biodiversity, soil quality or animal welfare are considered inadequately or stay unaccounted. In the case of biodiversity agriculture is considered as the main driver for the worldwide biodiversity loss. Thus, biodiversity cannot be neglected in future agricultural LCAs. Even though there is no widely accepted approach yet, a lot of research has been undertaken to solve the question how biodiversity can be assessed in the LCA framework. Within a literature review eleven studies with biodiversity assessment...

Organic Farming, Climate Change Mitigation and Beyond. Reducing the environmental impacts of eu agriculture Organic Eprints
Müller, Adrian; Bautze, Lin; Meier, Matthias; Gattinger, Andreas; Gall, Eric; Chatzinikolaou, Effimia; Meredith, Stephen; Ukas, Tonći; Ullmann, Laura.
Sustainably feeding the growing world population and preventing dangerous climate change are two of the major challenges facing society today. While there is a growing understanding of the complexity of the links between these challenges and of the global degradation of the environment, the contribution of food and farming to climate change mitigation is all too often looked at from the single perspective of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per hectare or kilogram of product. This narrow view fails to account for the vast array of ways that food and farming contribute to climate change, as well as the destructive effects of industrial agriculture on soils, biodiversity and the natural resources on which we depend for food production. The impact of...

The trade-off between scope and precision in sustainability assessments of food systems Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Meier, Matthias; Grenz, Jan; Stolze, Matthias.
With sustainability becoming an increasingly important issue, several tools have been developed, promising to assess sustainability of farms and farming systems. However, looking closer at the scope, the level of assessment and the precision of indicators used for impact assessment we discern considerable differences between the sustainability impact assessment tools at hand. The aim of this paper is therefore to classify and analyse six different sustainability impact assessment tools with respect to the assessment level, the scope and the precision. From our analysis we can conclude that there is a trade-off between scope and precision of these tools. Thus one-size-fits-all solutions with respect to tool selection are rarely feasible. Furthermore, as the...

Agriculture bio respectueuse du climat: le jeu en vaut-il la chandelle? Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Meier, Matthias.

Mitigating the impact of agriculture on air quality and climate change: Solutions for improved Nitrogen management Organic Eprints
Steinemann, Beatrice; Gattinger, Andreas; Krauss, Maike; Berner, Alfred; Leiber, Florian; Maurer, Veronika; Meier, Matthias; Oehen, Bernadette; Bautze, Lin; Niggli, Urs.
Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions have increased since the pre-industrial era, driven largely by economic and population growth, and are now higher than ever. This has led to atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide that are unprecedented in at least the last 800 000 years. Their effects, together with those of other anthropogenic drivers, have been detected throughout the climate system and are extremely likely to have been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century.
