Andrade,Débora Roque de Freitas; Rezende,Adalgiza Souza Carneiro; Santos,Sandra Aparecida; Nogueira,Márcia Furlan; Santiago,Juliano Martins; Lage,Jéssica; Melo,Marília Martins; Reis,Jenner Karlisson Pimenta; Trigo,Pablo.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of equine infectious anemia (EIA) on the physical performance of equines from the Brazilian Pantanal region. A total of 16 males were evaluated, divided into two groups: 8 seronegative (G1) and 8 seropositive (G2) for EIA. Two graded exercise tests were carried out before (T1) and after (T2) 42 days of training. Heart rate, lactate concentration, distance covered, and hematocrit level were recorded. In both tests, G1 covered a greater distance. In T2, G2 had lower hematocrit levels and lower speeds reached at different lactate concentrations and heart rates. The athletic performance of the evaluated equines is affected by equine infectious anemia.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in the treatment of myonecrosis induced by Bothrops alternatus venom in rats. Seventy-five male adult Wistar rats were divided into three experimental groups. G1 and G2 were injected in the gastrocnemius muscle with 120μg of B. alternatus venom, while G3 received 200μL of PBS only. Three days after the venom injection, 12 rats from G1 were treated with 5.0 x 106 MSC in PBS, whereas G2 and G3 rats received PBS. Every three days, blood and muscle samples of five animals from each group were taken for serum biochemical and pathological analyses. Histological examinations showed more intense muscle lesions following MSC treatment, characterized by disorganization and loss...

Carvalho,Ciro José Sousa de; Melo,Marília Martins; Michell,Ana Flávia Ribeiro Machado; Torres,Bruno Benetti Junta; Riet-Correa,Franklin; Guedes,Roberto Maurício Carvalho; Ferraz,Vany Perpetua; Soto-Blanco,Benito; Silva,Silvana Maria Medeiros de Sousa.
ABSTRACT: In Brazil, at least 16 poisonous plant species can affect the central nervous system of livestock. Recently in the state of Piauí, Northeastern Brazil, Brunfelsia uniflora was reported as a cause of nervous signs in donkeys, cattle, and small ruminants. In order to assess the toxicity of B. uniflora extracts, 20 Swiss mice were distributed into four groups (n=5) receiving by gavage alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, or saline (control group). After administration of the extracts in a single dose (5g kg-1), all mice were observed daily for clinical signs. Mice that received the extracts showed moderate to severe clinical signs, including piloerection, vocalization, and seizures. All mice dosed with saponins died between 10 and 20min after...

Blood chemistry profile of Surubim hybrid fish (Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum X P. corruscans) raised in different stocking densities Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Labarrère,Carla Rosa; Faria,Paulo Mário Carvalho de; Teixeira,Edgar de Alencar; Melo,Marília Martins.
Massive production, such as fish growing in water recirculation system, imposes challenges to animals capable of altering their homeostatic balance, and is able to affect their physiological performance. Therefore, the levels of ions and serum enzymes can be used as indicators of fish health. This study aimed to analyze the blood biochemistry profile of hybrid surubim (P. reticulatum X P. corruscans) submitted to different stocking densities in water recirculation system, in two distinct stages of production, from 150 to 400 g (first trial), and 400 to 1000 g (second trial). In the first trial, the five stocking rates were: 27.5, 47.5, 67.5, 87.5 and 107.5 fish/m³ of water. To obtain these densities, it was used 11, 19, 27, 35 and 43 fish per tank,...
