Langjährige Auswirkungen reduzierter Bodenbearbeitung auf unterschiedlichen Standorten Organic Eprints
Mäder, Paul; Berner, Alfred; Dierauer, Hansueli; Messmer, Monika.
Results on the applicability of reduced tillage systems are reported to be highly site dependent. To broaden our experience under organic farming, we performed a mid-term experiment comparing RT with conventional tillage (CT: plough) on a loamy clay in Frick (Switzerland). We found, that crop yield was reduced during the conversion period from conventional tillage (CT) to a RT system, but in the second experimental phase, RT exerted higher yields, resulting in a yield increase of 13% in mean. Soil organic matter in the 0 to 10 cm soil layer was 0,37 % higher under RT than under CT, without any difference in the 10 to 20 cm layer. In 2008 and 2009, we established two new experiments on loamy soils, comprising the factors tillage, fertilisation and maize...

Participatory cotton breeding for organic and low input farming in India Organic Eprints
Messmer, Monika; Roner, Tina; Finckh, Maria R.; Forster, Dionys; Rajeev, Verma; Rajeev, Baruah; Shreekant S, Patil.
Organic cotton production currently takes place in 22 countries resulting in 241’697 metric tons of fibre and 1.1% of the global cotton production (Truscott et al. 2010). Up to 80% of world’s organic cotton is produced in India. However, this market is threatened due to the displacement of traditional cotton species and cultivars by genetically modified (GM) hybrids selected for high input farming. Organic cotton farmers are facing increased difficulties in finding suitable cultivars in India (Nemes, 2010). Moreover, there is a big risk of physical and genetic contamination of organic cotton with GM cotton and the loss of locally adapted genetic resources. Therefore fast action is needed to re-establish a GM-free seed chain and breeding programs for...

Nutrient use efficiency and arbuscular mycorrhizal root colonisation of winter wheat cultivars in different farming systems of the DOK long-term trial Organic Eprints
Hildermann, Isabell; Messmer, Monika; Dubois, David; Boller, Thomas; Wiemken, Andres; Mäder, Paul.
BACKGROUND: For organic farming, cultivars are required with high nutrient use efficiency under nutrient limited conditions. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are known to contribute to nutrient uptake under low input conditions. We compared nutrient use efficiency (NUE) of old and modern organically and conventionally bred cultivars in organic and conventional systems and assessed AMF-root colonisation (AMF-RC) in relation to nutrient concentrations. RESULTS: Cultivars and systems had a statistically significant effect on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations and NUE parameters, whereas no genotype × environment interactions appeared. In contrast to N and P uptake, the NUE parameters were higher under organic than under conventional...

Pushing forward white lupin as a local source for protein and nitrogen in Central Europe Organic Eprints
Rosenfeld, Simon; Voegele, Ralf T.; Messmer, Monika; Finckh, Maria R.; Szuszkiewicz, Roderick; Oberhänsli, Thomas; Hohmann, Pierre.
White lupin (Lupinus albus L.) is a promising leguminous crop. Europe is fully dependent on protein and nitrogen fertilizer imports. This has tremendous negative effects both in Europe and the producing countries, such as loss of terrestrial biodiversity, pollution of freshwater, increase of greenhouse gases and soil acidification. Diverse crop-rotations with a substantial amount of pulses are a proven solution. The protein composition and yield potential of white lupin suggest that it could become the ‘Soy of the North’. Currently, the seed-borne pathogen Colletotrichum lupini is substantially impeding the cultivation of white lupin in Central Europe. We developed a DNA-based diagnostic test to identify and quantify the fungal pathogen in plants and...

Amélioration de l’approvisionnement en protéines indigènes avec des cultures associées Organic Eprints
Clerc, Maurice; Klaiss, Matthias; Messmer, Monika; Arncken, Christine; Dierauer, Hansueli; Hegglin, Django; Böhler, Daniel.

The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) established farming systems comparison trials in Bolivia, Kenya and India (SysCom). Besides long-term experiments, the program includes a participatory on-farm research (POR) component which aims at solving the most urgent problems of local farmers. In India, these related to nutrient management, organic pest control and seed availability, which were tackled using a combination of on-farm and on-station trials. We here present the methods, results and lessons learnt of the activities implemented in the POR component of SysCom in India.

Lupins in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Arncken, Christine; Messmer, Monika.
Switzerland has a size of 41’285 square kilometres of which 36 % are farmland. As a large proportion of the farmland lies on the slopes of the Swiss Alps and Swiss Jurassic mountains, grassland and dairy production play a dominant role in Swiss agriculture. The agricultural area (seasonal pastures in the higher mountains excluded) is about 1 million hectares, 58 % of which is permanent grassland, only 38 % are arable, mainly concentrated in the Swiss plateau region between the Jura Mountains and the Alps (Agristat 2017).

Reduced tillage is increasingly promoted to improve sustainability and productivity of agricultural systems. Nonetheless, adoption of reduced tillage by organic farmers has been slow due to concerns about nutrient supply, soil structure, and weeds that may limit yields. Here, we compiled the results from both published and unpublished research comparing deep or shallow inversion tillage, with various categories of reduced tillage under organic management. Shallow refers to less than 25 cm. We found that (1) division of reduced tillage practices into different classes with varying degrees of intensity allowed us to assess the trade-offs between reductions in tillage intensity, crop yields, weed incidence, and soil C stocks. (2) Reducing tillage intensity in...

Klimaneutraler Acker- und Gemüsebau - Auswirkungen von reduzierter Bodenbearbeitung und Gründüngungen auf Bodenfruchtbarkeit, Klima und Ökonomie – bisherige Erkenntnisse und aktuelle Versuche Organic Eprints
Mäder, Paul; Berner, Alfred; Fließbach, Andreas; Messmer, Monika; Koller, Martin; Weibel, Franco; Stolze, Matthias; Schader, Christian; Sanders, Jürn; Dierauer, Hansueli; Clerc, Maurice.

ABILITY OF COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE SOYBEAN BRADYRHIZOBIA INOCULANTS FOR COOL GROWING CONDITIONS IN CENTRAL EUROPE Organic Eprints
Zimmer, Stephanie; Messmer, Monika; Haase, Thorsten; Mindermann, Anke; Schulz, Hannes; Wilbois, Klaus-Peter; Hess, Jürgen.
In Central Europe the inoculation of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) with different Bradyrhizobia inoculants has led to unsatisfying nodulation results under low temperature conditions. The aim of this study was to test the capacity of commercially available inoculants under cool growing conditions in Central Europe. In 2011 and 2012 four Bradyrhizobia inoculants were tested on three early soybean varieties in a field trial in Germany. The number of nodules, yield and protein content were assessed. Two years data showed a successful nodulation of Product 4, Product 3 and Product 2 while Product 1 cannot be recommended. Independently of soybean variety, all of the three successful inoculants can be advised regarding grain yield. Protein content and protein...
