Livestock farmers’ attitude towards manure separation technology as future strategy AgEcon
Gebrezgabher, Solomie A.; Lanker, Dora; Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M..
In this paper, an ordered probit model is used to assess the factors that affect the probability of livestock farmers having plans to adopt manure separation technology in the future. A survey, based on a postal and computerized questionnaire of representative dairy and pig farms in the Netherlands was carried out in 2009. The results show that age of farmer and a variable which accounts for the interaction between size and location of the farm are important variables explaining the probability of farmers having plans to adopt manure separation technology. Furthermore, farmers who agreed that future application norms are the driving force for considering adoption of manure separation technology were more likely to consider manure separation as the right...

Liability Risks in Agri-food Supply Chains: The Case of Wet Feed AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Van Asseldonk, Marcel A.P.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M..
Recent animal feed crises caused substantial damage throughout food supply chains and, consequently, initiated debates on the liability insurance cover of animal feed companies. In this framework, a quantitative risk analysis for wet feed producers in the Netherlands is presented. The simulation model developed is parameterised by among others data from three Dutch wet feed companies reflecting about 45% of the wet feed market in the Netherlands. The model addresses direct damage up to farm level. Default outcomes per crisis show that the number of contaminated farms is expected to be 117, with a variation from 19 farms in the 5% percentile to 331 farms in the 95% percentile. Projected direct damage per crisis is on average Euro 0.9 million, ranging from...

An integrated chain risk analysis of genetic modification in livestock production chains AgEcon
Novoselova, Tatiana A.; Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M..
This article presents an integrated consumer acceptance and supply chain risk analysis of genetic modification in livestock production chains. In general, results provide insight into feasibility of certain GM applications to be incorporated into pork chain. Overall, livestock producers can expect a cost reduction. Moreover, with the heterogeneous nature of consumer preferences there are some segments that wholly respond on the integration of different GM applications in the chain. However, in some cases, it is difficult to say whether the chain can respond to consumers'’ requirements.

Food supply chain consequences of new responses to livestock epidemics AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Mourits, Monique; Hoste, Robert; Bergevoet, Ron H.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M..
This article studies supply chain consequences from applying the new-more socially acceptable -strategy of emergency vaccination instead of the large-scale killing of healthy animals for controlling livestock epidemics. We consider an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in a densely populated livestock area of the Netherlands. From an epidemiological perspective, simulation results show that emergency vaccination significantly reduces the size of an epidemic, both in terms of the length of an outbreak and in the number of animals killed. However, in a worst-case situation, not destroying the vaccinated animals after the end of the epidemic leads to additional consequential losses for food supply chains involved of about Euro 200 million. A business case...

THE FEASIBILITY OF FARM REVENUE INSURANCE IN AUSTRALIA AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M.; Hardaker, J. Brian.
Arrow (1965) stated that making markets for trading risk more complete can be socially beneficial. Within this perspective, we discuss the feasibility of farm revenue insurance for Australian agriculture. The feasibility is first discussed from an insurer's point of view. Well-known problems of moral hazard, adverse selection and systemic risk are central. Then, the feasibility is studied from a farmer’s point of view. A simulation model illustrates that gross revenue insurance can be both cheaper and more effective than separate price and yield insurance schemes. We argue that due to the systemic nature of price and yields risks within years and the positive correlation between years, some publicprivate partnership for reinsurance may be necessary for...

FEASIBILITY OF INCOME INSURANCE IN EUROPEAN AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M..
Liberalization of agricultural markets leads to new risks for European farmers. This paper studies the feasibility of income insurance schemes for European crop and livestock farmers. Different insurance topics, such as governmental reinsurance and the use of mutual insurance funds, are described and analyzed, using individual farm level data of different areas and commodities. In this paper it is argued that 'income' insurance in European agriculture should be restricted to yield-only insurance schemes that are organized per commodity and per region and in which governments play the role of 'lender of last resort.

Perception of Innovative Crop Insurance in Australia AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Molnar, Tams A..
Worldwide, extreme climate risks cause stakeholders in food supply chains to search for new risk management tools. In Australia, recently so‐called crop yield simulation insurance has been introduced based on an integrated agrometeorological simulation model. Current uptake is relatively low, possibly because Australian farmers perceive commodity price risk as more important than climate risk. Also, they perceive risk management tools such as water management and diversification as more important than buying crop insurance. Still, opportunities seem to exist for new insurance products, such as crop yield simulation insurance, as indicated by farmers’ interest into such products. Outcomes are useful in worldwide discussions on risk management opportunities...

PERCEPTIONS OF RISKS AND RISK MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES; AN ANALYSIS OF DUTCH LIVESTOCK FARMERS AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M.; Hardaker, J. Brian.
The risk environment of farmers is changing and new risk management strategies are being introduced. Beal (1996) stated that risk management strategies adopted by farmers will be in accordance with their personal preferences for risk. In this context it would be useful for developers and sellers of new risk management strategies to have insight into farmers' preferences for risk. This paper studies to what extent such preferences are farmer-specific or whether general relationships exist. By means of a large questionnaire survey among 2700 livestock farmers in the Netherlands we gathered data on four groups of variables, i.e. socioeconomic characteristics of the farm, farmers' attitudes towards risk, their perceptions of sources of risk, and their...

Income insurance as a risk management tool after 2013 CAP reforms? AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Van Asseldonk, Marcel A.P.M.; Pietola, Kyosti; Hardaker, J. Brian; Huirne, Ruud B.M..
The ecosystem and the economic subsystem are interlinked. In fact, it is the overconsumption of scarce resources or the overproduction of bad outputs at economic system level that causes a great part of the imbalances at the ecosystem level. Some imbalances do not originate at the economic system level, but are due to external factors. Given the possibility of external shocks, respecting static sustainability thresholds is not a guarantee for system sustainability. In a dynamic setting, the concept of resilience is therefore helpful. In this paper we show how this concept can complement the traditional efficiency approach to come to a sustainable value creating economic system.

TRACEABILITY AND CERTIFICATION IN MEAT SUPPLY CHAINS AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Velthuis, Annet G.J.; Hogeveen, Henk; Huirne, Ruud B.M..
Food safety problems such as the BSE and dioxin crises focused attention on traceability systems and the certification of such systems. This study analyzes the status and perspectives of traceability systems and certification schemes, and reviews their potential costs and benefits. Results indicate that traceability and certification in meat supply chains comprise a very dynamic area with an increasing impact. Necessary transparency, control of livestock epidemics, increasing due diligence, and a declining role for governments are critical factors. Findings also reveal there is a general focus on the technical characteristics of traceability and certification, and there is a lack of economic considerations. Therefore, specific topics are emphasized for an...

Costs of Producing Biogas at Dairy Farms in The Netherlands AgEcon
Gebrezgabher, Solomie A.; Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M..
By 2020, Dutch dairy chains envisage to be self‐sufficient with regard to energy used by dairy farms and dairy processors. This would require dairy farms to produce 25 PJ per year, possibly by a combination of wind, solar and biogas. This paper focuses on biogas. To evaluate the project’s viability we estimated the expected technical and financial performance of 4 types of business models, i.e. “CHP‐farm”, “CHP‐large”, “green gas” and “central upgrading of green gas”. Data stem from among others 23 biogas plants in the Netherlands. Anticipating that CHPmodels and green gas models occur with a likelihood of 40% and 60% respectively, the total number of biogas plants would amount to 232 (1% of dairy farms), including a total of 5 million tons of manure per...

Economic Impact of Prospective Risk Management Instruments Under Alternative Policy Scenarios AgEcon
Van Asseldonk, Marcel A.P.M.; Majewski, Edward; Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Was, Adam; Guba, Waldemar; Dalton, Graham E.; Landmesser, Joanna; Berg, Ernst; Huirne, Ruud B.M..
The main objective was to assess the risk of farmers in the European Union and to analyze the impact of agricultural policy changes on the main components of income namely price and production risks. In order to achieve this, qualitative considerations and quantitative analyses covering the period 2004 – 2018 have been made. Future policy scenarios have been defined, taking into account likely Common Agricultural Policy developments, including possible outcomes of the Doha round of the WTO negotiations. Subsequently, the economic impact of policy scenarios in conjunction with a set of prospective risk management instruments for the European Union are determined.

Consumer Acceptance of GM Applications in the Pork Production Chain: A Choice Modelling Approach AgEcon
Novoselova, Tatiana A.; van der Lans, Ivo A.C.M.; Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M..
This study evaluates consumer acceptance of different GM applications in the pork production chain. In general, results indicate that consumers prefer conventional pork over pork for which genetic modification was applied. However, the negative impact of the GM applications is compensated by improvements in quality, increased animal welfare, a lower impact on the environment, less residues and a price discount. Of these benefits, increased animal welfare has the most positive effect on consumer choices. With substantial monetary compensation and presence of various benefits the consumers will attach higher utility to the GM pork than to the conventional pork. The amount of monetary compensation is dependent on the type of GM application.

Assessing Food Safety Concepts on the Dairy Farm: The Case of Chemical Hazards AgEcon
Valeeva, Natasha I.; Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M.; Bergevoet, Ron H.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M..
Adaptive conjoint analysis was used to elicit farmers' and experts' preferences for attributes of improving food safety with respect to chemical hazards on the dairy farm. Groups of respondents were determined by cluster analysis based on similar farmers' and experts' perceptions of food safety improvement. Results show differences in priority of the more important attributes. However, respondents in all groups valued "identification of treated cows" as one of the most important attributes. The results provide the processing industry and extension service with a better understanding of aspects that may form farmers' perceptions of improving food safety, and thus help to define the message for targeting different farmer groups.

Farm Level Economic Implications of Genetic Selection for Improving Milk Fat Composition AgEcon
Demeter, Robert Milan; Bovenhuis, Henk; Kristensen, Anders Ringgaard; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M.; Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; van Arendonk, Johan A.M..
The objective of the study was to assess the farm level economic implications of value-adding genetic selection strategies to improve milk fat composition. Selection based on a quantitative trait (ratio of total saturated to total unsaturated fatty acids in milk) or a known genotype (for the DGAT1 gene) was considered. Technical and economic performance of hypothetical herds were computed by a herd optimization and simulation model. It was assumed that the herds are already bred for the specific milk composition, and the transition period was not considered. Correlated effects of the selection scenarios on milk production, female fertility, and functional longevity traits were accounted for. Results showed that increasing the total unsaturated fatty acids...

Trade-offs Between Consumer Concerns: An Application for Pork Production AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; van der Lans, Ivo A.C.M..
This paper studies multiple attributes of pork production and analyses the trade-offs that consumers make between them. Results show that without considering the trade-offs, animal welfare and food safety are on average perceived as the most important attributes. However, including trade-offs, Taste and Price become major concerns. Conclusions are nuanced as for a number of segments and specific trade-offs Taste and Price are relatively less important. Results support the implementation of differentiated chain designs with distinct and innovative decisions for trade-offs to be made.

Consumers' Perception of Milk Safety AgEcon
Novoselova, Tatiana A.; Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; van der Lans, Ivo A.C.M.; Valeeva, Natasha I..
Several times during the last decade consumers have been warned about different incidents concerning food safety, like, salmonella in eggs, cheese and poultry, and pesticides residues in tomatoes. The problem of food safety is still to be a largely latent concern for consumers. The main research goal of this paper is to investigate consumers' risk attitudes and risk perceptions concerning milk safety and to estimate their willingness to pay for extra-safe milk. The data was collected in the Netherlands using a mail survey. 211 usable questionnaires (26%) were returned. Results show that, in general, consumers are not concerned about the safety of milk. However, the results of consumers' perceptions of the "riskiness of milk contamination" for vulnerable...
