Seafloor long-term, multiparameter, single-frame observatories have been developed within the framework of European Commission and Italian projects since 1995. A fleet of five seafloor observatories, built-up starting from 1995 within the framework of an effective synergy among research institutes and industries, have carried out a series of long-term sea experiments. The observatories are able to operate from shallow waters to deep-sea, down to 4000 m w.d., and to simultaneously monitor a broad spectrum of geophysical and environmental processes, including seismicity, geomagnetic field variations, water temperature, pressure, salinity, chemistry, currents, and gas occurrence. Moreover, they can transmit data in (near)-real-time that can be integrated with... |

As part of the multidisciplinary programme ECOMARGE (ECOsysteme des MARGEs continentales) an experiment to measure vertical flux of particles was carried out in the golfe du Lion off Banyuls-sur-Mer (Lacaze-Duthiers canyon) over a period of 17 days in autumn 1983. Sediment traps were deployed at depths of 100, 200 and 315 m in a water column 350 m deep. The trapped material appeared to consist of fine muddy sediment and numerous biogenic debris. Total mass flux increased linearly with depth from 4 g m super(-2) day super(-1) at 100 m to 13 g m super(-2) day super(-1) at 315 m. The lithogenic fraction was predominant at all depths (55 to 60% of total mass flux). Trap-collected fecal pellets were categorized by different shape classes and enumerated. Mass... |

A large number of several-month current time series is now available in the western Mediterranean Sea, and harmonic and spectral analyses provide spatially coherent information about the major tidal (M2, S2, N2 and K1) currents in the region. When they are significant, these currents are generally barotropic, they mainly rotate clockwise and their ellipses have orientations that are strongly dependent on the local bathymetry. From the Alboran Sea to the Algerian Basin, the Ibiza Channel and as far as the Sardinian Channel, the velocities of the semidiurnal components continuously decrease from a few 10(-2) m/s in the west to 10(-3) m/s and even less in the east. The phases increase eastward from the Alboran Sea to 3-4 degrees E in the western Algerian... |

The present paper describes the major results obtained from 1989 to 1992 by the EUROMODEL group in studying the circulation in the Western Mediterranean Sea. Particular emphasis has been given to the physical processes responsible for seasonal and mesoscale variabilities. Observations (in situ and satellite), together with theoretical, physical and numerical models, have been widely used in the course of these studies. Attention has been focused on the dynamics of the northern basin (deep water formation, dynamics of the Northern Mediterranean Current, circulation and shelf/slope interaction in the Balearic Sea) and of the southern basin (Alboran Sea circulation, instabilities of the Algerian Current). The straits dynamics have been studied with particular... |

The Algerian current observed during most of the summers between 1975 and 1983 appeared as a succession of eddies (diameter about 100 km) propagating eastward along the coast. In 1984, however, satellite infrared imagery revealed two huge (diameter about 200 km) and driftless anticyclonic eddies occupying most of the Algerian basin. The Atlantic water was deflected seaward as far as the Balearic islands by the westernmost eddy located off Algiers, and was then dispatched by other eddies throughout the basin as if by a set of paddle-wheels. Nevertheless, and independent of the general situation, the occurrence of eddies induces secondary phenomena such as advections of surface water from the Liguro-Provencal basin into the Algerian basin, cool tongues and... |

In the framework of the EU-funded MFSTEP project, autonomous drifting profilers were deployed throughout the Mediterranean Sea to collect temperature and salinity profile data and to measure subsurface currents. The realization of this profiler program in the Mediterranean, referred to as MedArgo, is described and assessed using data collected between June 2004 and December 2006 (including more than 2000 profiles). Recommendations are provided for the permanent future implementation of MedArgo in support of operational oceanography in the Mediterranean Sea. More than twenty drifting profilers were deployed from research vessels and ships-of-opportunity in most areas of the Mediterranean. They were all programmed to execute 5-day cycles with a drift at a... |
