Eine Erhebung zur Parasitenkontrolle auf biologisch wirtschaftenden Schaf- und Ziegenbetrieben in der Schweiz Organic Eprints
Bollinger, SB; Moakes, Simon; Stolze, Matthias; Werne, S..
To determine the current control measures for strointestinal nematodes (GIN) on Swiss organic small ruminant farms, a phone questionnaire was developed and conducted. The survey also aimed to assess the understanding and implementation of possible alternative GIN control options. In total, 52 meat sheep and 58 dairy goat farm questionnaires were completed, and it was found that in general, farmers were aware of the potential benefit of an adequate grazing management to reduce GIN infection. However, practical realisation was often limiting. On average it was stated that adult meat sheep and dairy goats were drenched 1.5 and 1.3 times per animal and year, respectively, whilst lambs and kids were treated 1.6 and 1.3 times per animal and year, respectively....

Implications of feed concentrate reduction in organic grassland-based dairy systems: a long-term on-farm study Organic Eprints
Leiber, Florian; Schenk, Isabel K.; Maeschli, Ariane; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Zeitz, Johanna O.; Moakes, Simon; Klocke, Peter; Staehli, Pamela; Notz, Christophe; Walkenhorst, Michael.
In response to increasing efforts for reducing concentrate inputs to organic dairy production in grassland-rich areas of Europe, a long-term study was conducted, which assessed the impacts of concentrate reductions on cows’ performance, health, fertility and average herd age. In total, 42 Swiss commercial organic dairy cattle farms were monitored over 6 years (‘Y0’, 2008/09 until ‘Y5’, 2013/14). In comparison with overall data of Swiss herdbooks (including conventional and organic farms), the herds involved in the project had lower milk yields, similar milk solids, shorter calving intervals and higher average lactation numbers. During the first 3 project years farmers reduced the concentrate proportion (i.e. cereals, oilseeds and grain legumes) in the...

Long term trends in the financial performance of organic farms in England and Wales, 2006/07-2011/12 Organic Eprints
Lampkin, Nic; Gerrard, Catherine L; Moakes, Simon.
This overview report brings together the data for the six years from 2006/07-2011/12 to see how the performance of organic farms has really been affected by the economic downturn. It shows that for most farm types, the profitability of organic farms has held up much better than might have been expected from the retail market trend data. The overviews also show that for most farm types, the performance of organic farms remains comparable with that of similar conventional farms. However, certain farm types such as horticulture have fared much worse than others. The report is based on the analysis of farms included in the Farm Business Survey in England and Wales that have more than 70% certified land. The results are presented by farm type groups...

PrOPara: Report on helminth parasite control strategies cross organic farms in Europe Organic Eprints
Werne, Steffen; Thüer, Susann; Grovermann, Christian; Moakes, Simon.
In recent years, a number of reports have been published on current practices for helminth control in the EU, but none in organic ruminants. As conventional and organic farms differ in their helminth control strategies, it is essential to record the current control practices for organic farms across EU, identify obstacles that hamper the implementation of innovations and determine farmers’ disposition towards such innovations to facilitate the implementation of appropriate innovations. Within the PrOPara project WP 4.1 was addressing the status quo of nematode control in organic ruminant farms across Europe. This did not only include the helminth management strategies, which are currently implemented, but also farmers’ perception towards nematode control...

Review of the market for Welsh organic meat, 2007 Organic Eprints
Cullen, Richard; Lampkin, Nic; Moakes, Simon.
The supply situation for Welsh organic meat Organic production in Wales has been developing steadily in the last five years, with particular emphasis on organic cattle and sheep production. This was despite over-supply conditions in some sectors, notably dairy, following the very rapid growth in 1999/2000. Between the end of 2002 and end of 2005, the number of holdings increased by 12% to 688, and the certified land area increased by 29% to 71,000 hectares, of which more than 90% is grassland. Growth in Wales has exceeded other parts of the UK, reaching 5% of agricultural land by end 2005. More rapid growth is projected for 2006 and possibly 2007. Organic cattle and sheep numbers have also increased steadily between 2003 and 2005, with total cattle...

Opportunities for farming in alpine countries – pathways to truly grassland-based beef and milk production in Austria and Switzerland Organic Eprints
Frick, Rebekka; Weisshaidinger, Rainer; Moakes, Simon; Müller, Adrian; Bartel, Andreas; Schwank, Othmar; Petrasek, Richard; Biedermann, Roger; Stolze, Matthias.
Farming in the alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland fulfils important economic, socio-cultural and ecological functions for society. At the same time, it is responsible for important environmental impacts, whereas nitrogen balance surpluses and related impacts play a central role. It is crucial to reduce nitrogen inputs and site-adapted production and closing material cycles are core elements of ecologically sustainable land use. The study analysed the effects of adapted beef and dairy systems on the environmental impact and the food production with the help of the SOL mass-flow model. This includes higher reliance on grassland-based feed by abandoning the use of concentrate feed and forage maize, locally adapted reduction of livestock numbers,...

Accounting for uncertainty in multi-criteria sustainability assessments at the farm level: Improving the robustness of the SMART-Farm Tool Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Curran, Michael; Heidenreich, Anja; Landert, Jan; Blockeel, Johan; Baumgart, Lukas; Ssebunya, Brian; Moakes, Simon; Marton, Silvia; Lazzarini, Gianna; Niggli, Urs; Stolze, Matthias.
Many farm sustainability assessments use multi-criteria methods for aggregating indicators based on performance scores and importance weights. One of these is the SMART-Farm Tool, which measures the degree of goal achievement of farms across 327 indicators nested within 4 sustainability dimensions, 21 themes and 58 sub-themes of the FAO-SAFA Guidelines (Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture). This study aims to improve the empirical foundation of the SMART-Farm Tool by (i) evaluating the uncertainty of indicator weights obtained via expert opinion and (ii) integrating this uncertainty into SMART assessment results. An adapted Delphi process was implemented, involving a group of 67 experts from 21 countries divided into thematic and regional...

Eckpunkte einer standortangepassten Landwirtschaft in der Schweiz Organic Eprints
Müller, Adrian; Meier, Matthias; Moakes, Simon; Oehen, Bernadette.
