Variações na forma do otólito sagitta de Coryphaena hippurus (Actinopterygii: Coryphaenidae) em uma área de ressurgência na costa sudoeste do Oceano Atlântico Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Almeida,Paulo R. C.; Monteiro-Neto,Cassiano; Tubino,Rafael A.; Costa,Marcus R..

Comparative analysis of tidepool fish species composition on tropical coastal rocky reefs at State of Ceará, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Cunha,Edna A.; Carvalho,Roberto A. A.; Monteiro-Neto,Cassiano; Moraes,Luiz Eduardo S.; Araújo,Maria Elisabeth.
This study compared tidepool fish assemblages within and among habitats at Iparana and Pecém beaches, State of Ceará, Northeast Brazil, using visual census techniques. A total of 8,914 fishes, representing 25 families and 43 species were recorded. The most abundant taxon was Sparisoma spp, followed by Haemulon parra (Desmarest, 1823), Acanthurus chirurgus (Bloch, 1787) and Abudefduf saxatilis (Linnaeus, 1758). Haemulidae was the most abundant family in number of individuals, followed by Scaridae, Acanthuridae and Pomacentridae. Within- and between- site differences in species assemblages probably reflected environmental discontinuities and more localized features, such as pool isolation episodes, or environmental complexity, both acting isolated or...

Taxonomic status of two morphotypes of Coryphaena hippurus (Perciformes: Coryphaenidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Bonner,Alan; Duarte,Michelle R.; Souza,Rosa C. C. L.; Monteiro-Neto,Cassiano; Silva,Edson P..
ABSTRACT Two Coryphaena hippurus morphotypes (dourado and palombeta) are found along the Brazilian coast and are considered by Rio de Janeiro’s fisherman and fishmongers as two different species. Furthermore, these morphotypes are commercialized under different values and suffer different fishing pressure. Therefore, a definition of their taxonomic status is an important economic and biological matter. In order to investigate this problem, allozyme electrophoresis method was undertaken for seventeen loci on 117 individuals of C. hippurus sampled at Cabo Frio/RJ (Brazil). The data indicate homogeneity between the morphotypes gene pools. Nevertheless, differences were found for genetic variation among dourado and palombeta, especially due to alcohol...

Reef fish community structure on three islands of Itaipu, Southeast Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Mendonça-Neto,José Policarpo de; Monteiro-Neto,Cassiano; Moraes,Luiz Eduardo.
We provide here the first assessment of the composition, abundance and distribution of rocky reef fishes of Itaipu Sound, Rio de Janeiro, off the southeastern Brazilian coast. Monthly visual censuses, benthic quadrats and chain link transects were conducted over one year on rocky reefs at three islands (Menina, Mãe and Pai). A total of 2466 individual fish, belonging to 29 families and 42 species were recorded. The most abundant fish species were Parablennius pilicornis, Haemulon steindachneri, Orthopristis ruber and Diplodus argenteus. Sheltered and complex habitats showed the most abundant and diverse fish populations. There was a major significant separation between sampling sites and a secondary seasonal pattern. The three sites showed similar fish...

Population characteristics, space use and habitat associations of the seahorse Hippocampus reidi (Teleostei: Syngnathidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Rosa,Ierecê Lucena; Oliveira,Tacyana P. R.; Castro,André L. C.; Moraes,Luiz E. de Souza; Xavier,Josias H. A.; Nottingham,Mara C.; Dias,Thelma L. P.; Bruto-Costa,Leonardo V.; Araújo,Maria E.; Birolo,Alesandra B.; Mai,Ana C. G.; Monteiro-Neto,Cassiano.
This paper provides a case study of a threatened seahorse species, Hippocampus reidi, highlighting the importance of using ecological information to assist conservation and management initiatives. Underwater visual sighting data (50 x 2m transect) gathered along the NE, SE and S portions of the Brazilian coast revealed an unequal distribution across localities, perhaps related to harvesting pressure, and a mean density of 0.026 ind.m-2. Our findings suggest some restricted spatial use by H. reidi, which was consistent with its estimated home range, and with re-sighting of specimens. Reproduction was recorded year-round, however productive peaks may exist. Components of habitat structure mostly used as anchoring points were mangrove plants, macroalgae,...

Relationships between fish and otolith dimensions of Pomatomus saltatrix (Linnaeus, 1766) (Perciformes: Pomatomidae) in southeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Souza,Geysa M. de; Tubino,Rafael de A.; Monteiro-Neto,Cassiano; Costa,Marcus R. da.
ABSTRACT The bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix (Linnaeus, 1766), was used as a species-specific model to study morphometric relationships between otolith size and relative growth variables. Length-weight relationships between Otolith (Length-OL, Height-OH, and Weight-OW) and fish measurements (Total Length-TL and Total Weight-TW) were determined for fishes captured monthly during the year 2015 off the southeastern coast of Brazil. The ANCOVA and Kruskal-Wallis analysis did not indicate significant differences in the relative growth constants between sexes and length frequency distributions (p > 0.05). The condition factor also did not present significant differences between sexes, and right and left otolith measurements (p > 0.05). A total of 398...

Length-based estimates of growth parameters and mortality rates of fish populations from a coastal zone in the Southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Costa,Marcus Rodrigues da; Tubino,Rafael de Almeida; Monteiro-Neto,Cassiano.
ABSTRACT Small-scale fisheries in Brazil contribute to a significant share of total fish production, accessing a large variety of species. Life history parameters from these resources are important for their management and conservation, based on primary data. The objective of this article is to generate growth parameters and mortality rates of ten fish populations from a coastal zone in Southeastern Brazil. Monthly samples were taken between January 2011 and November 2014 from landings of the beach-seine fishery in an area adjacent to the entrance of the Guanabara Bay. All fishes were measured (total length) and weighed. The length-weight relationships (LWR) were estimated by linear regression analysis on log-transformed data of the equation: W = aL b ....

Reproductive biology and recruitment of bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix (Perciformes: Pomatomidae) in the southwestern Atlantic Rev. Bras. Zool.
Souza,Geysa Marinho de; Monteiro-Neto,Cassiano; Costa,Marcus Rodrigues da; Bastos,Ana Luiza; Martins,Raquel Rennó Mascarenhas; Vieira,Francyne Carolina dos Santos; Andrade-Tubino,Magda Fernandes de; Tubino,Rafael de Almeida.
ABSTRACT The bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix (Linneus 1766) is captured by industrial, artisanal, and recreational fisheries throughout its distribution range. The reproductive biology of P. saltatrix in the southwestern Atlantic was studied using 1,102 specimens captured by the Brazilian commercial fleet between March 2014 and December 2015. The recruitment period was identified from records of juveniles in experimental beach seine hauls carried out on sandy beaches in the external sector of Guanabara Bay for four years (2012-2015). Based on the reproductive indices and on the macro- and microscopic analyses of the gonads, spawning peaks were identified in autumn and spring. The size at first maturity was estimated at 35.5, 38.3, and 37.4 cm for females,...

Temporal and spatial variations in tidepool fish assemblages of the northeast coast of Brazil Biota Neotropica
Cunha,Francisca Edna de Andrade; Monteiro-Neto,Cassiano; Nottingham,Mara Carvalho.
Temporal and spatial variations and environmental factors influencing the structure of tidepool fish assemblages were quantitatively investigated at Iparana beach, northeast Brazilian coast. The majority of the tidepool fishes sampled were suprabenthic juvenile individuals of great mobility. We recorded during monthly diurnal underwater visual censuses a total of 4,750 fish from 26 species, represented mainly by partial residents from the families Scaridae, Haemulidae, Gerreidae and Pomacentridae. The number of species and individuals showed significant variability among tidepools as a response to variations in their volume and type of substrate cover. The greatest species abundance and richness associated with rocks covered with algae suggested that...
