Pereira,Liz Kazmirczak; Scapim,Carlos Alberto; Mangolin,Claudete Aparecida; Machado,Maria de Fátima Pires da Silva; Pacheco,Cleso Antônio Patto; Mora,Freddy.
Isozyme biochemical marker may be useful tool for genomic analysis of maize populations undergoing recurrent selection. Thus, isozymes markers was utilized for assess the changes in the genetic variability and distance in a Brazilian composite population of popcorn following four cycles of recurrent selection for yield. One hundred and ninety-six half-sib families were evaluated from each cycle and the ten highest-yielding families (5.2%) were recombined to produce the next cycle. Isozyme analysis considered 80 seedlings per cycle. Simple linear regression equations were estimated among the allele frequencies in each locus in function of the selection cycles, the genetic distances among the cycles and the average heterozygosity per locus for each cycle....

Santos,Alexandra Inês; Ribeiro,Ricardo Pereira; Vargas,Lauro; Mora,Freddy; Alexandre Filho,Luiz; Fornari,Darci Carlos; Oliveira,Sheila Nogueira de.
The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for survival and weight of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), farmed in cages and ponds in Brazil, and to predict genetic gain under different scenarios. Survival was recorded as a binary response (dead or alive), during harvest time in the 2008 grow-out period. Genetic parameters were estimated using a Bayesian mixed linear-threshold animal model via Gibbs sampling. The breeding population consisted of 2,912 individual fish, which were analyzed together with the pedigree of 5,394 fish. The heritabilities estimates, with 95% posterior credible intervals, for tagging weight, harvest weight and survival were 0.17 (0.09-0.27), 0.21 (0.12-0.32) and 0.32 (0.22-0.44), respectively. Credible...

Association mapping of drought tolerance indices in wheat: QTL-rich regions on chromosome 4A Scientia Agricola
Ballesta,Paulina; Mora,Freddy; Del Pozo,Alejandro.
ABSTRACT Drought is likely the main abiotic stress that affects wheat yield. The identification of drought-tolerant genotypes represents an effective way of dealing with the continuous decrease in water resources as well as the increase in world population. The aim of this study was to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) associated with drought tolerance indices in wheat by using a genome-wide association study (GWAS) under fully irrigated and rain-fed conditions. The drought tolerance indices (i.e., Stress Susceptibility Index, Stress Tolerance Index, Tolerance Index and Yield Stability Index) were calculated based on grain yield, 1,000-kernel weight and kernels per spike. The association panel was genotyped using genotyping-by-sequencing...

Mora,Freddy; Palma-Rojas,Claudio; Jara-Seguel,Pedro.

Bayesian analysis of growth, stem straightness and branching quality in full-sib families of Eucalyptus globulus Bragantia
Mora,Freddy; Ballesta,Paulina; Serra,Nicolle.
ABSTRACT Eucalyptus globulus is one of the most commonly planted hardwood species for industrial use in various temperate regions around the world. The present study aimed to evaluate 62 full-sib families of E. globulus in one of the southernmost progeny trials of the species in the south of Chile. Estimates of genetic parameters for stem straightness, branching quality and growth traits were based on a Bayesian modelling approach using Gibbs sampling. A Bayes Factor (BF) analysis supported the hypothesis of significant additive genetic variation for all traits under study. Conversely, the BF supported a model with significant dominance effects for the diameter at breast height and stem volume, which explained up to 25% of the phenotypic variation. The...

Generalized lineal models for the analysis of binary data from propagation experiments of Brazilian orchids BABT
Mora,Freddy; Gonçalves,Letícia de Menezes; Scapim,Carlos Alberto; Martins,Elias Nunes; Machado,Maria de Fátima Pires da Silva.
This study aimed at applying the generalized linear models (GLM) for the analysis of a germination experiment of Cattleya bicolor in which the response variable was binary. The purpose of this experiment was to assess the effects of the storage temperatures and culture mediums on the seed viability. The analyses of variance was also carried out either with or without the data transformation. All the statistical approaches indicated the importance of the storage temperature on the seed viability. But, the culture media and interaction effects were significant only by the GLM. Based on the GLM, the seeds stored at 10°C increased viability, in which the coconut medium achieved the best performance. The results emphasized the importance of adopting the GLM to...

Bayesian analysis of the genetic structure of a Brazilian popcorn germplasm using data from simple sequence repeats (SSR) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Saavedra,Javier; Silva,Tereza Aparecida; Mora,Freddy; Scapim,Carlos Alberto.
Several studies have confirmed that popcorn (Zea mays L. var. everta) has a narrow genetic basis, which affects the quality of breeding programs. In this study, we present a genetic characterization of 420 individuals representing 28 popcorn populations from Brazilian germplasm banks. All individuals were genotyped using 11 microsatellite markers from the Maize Genetics and Genomics Database. A Bayesian clustering approach via Monte Carlo Markov chains was performed to examine the genetic differentiation (Fst values) among different clusters. The results indicate the existence of three distinct and strongly differentiated genetic groups (K = 3). Moreover, the Fst values (calculated among clusters) were significantly different according to Bayesian credible...
