Latest Quaternary palaeoceanographic change in the eastern North Atlantic based upon a dinoflagellate cyst event ecostratigraphy ArchiMer
Harland, Rex; Asteman, Irina Polovodova; Morley, Audrey; Morris, Angela; Harris, Anthony; Howe, John A..
The analyses of dinoflagellate cyst records, from the latest Quaternary sediments recovered from DSDP Core 610A taken on the Feni Ridge in the southern Rockall Trough, and part of core MD01-2461 on the continental margin of the Porcupine Seabight in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean, has provided evidence for significant oceanographic change encompassing the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and part of the Holocene. This together with other published records has led to a regional evaluation of oceanographic change in the eastern North Atlantic over the past 68 ka, based upon a distinctive dinoflagellate event ecostratigraphy. These changes reflect changes in the surface waters of the North Atlantic Current (NAC), and perhaps the deeper thermohaline Atlantic...

Temperature calibration of Mg/Ca ratios in the intermediate water benthic foraminifer Hyalinea balthica ArchiMer
Rosenthal, Yair; Morley, Audrey; Barras, Christine; Katz, Miriam E.; Jorissen, Frans; Reichart, Gert-jan; Oppo, Delia W.; Linsley, Braddock K..
Core top samples from Indonesian and northeast Atlantic depth transects were used to calibrate Mg/Ca and delta O-18 in tests of the calcitic benthic foraminifer Hyalinea balthica to bottom water temperature between 4 degrees C and 13 degrees C. This shallow infaunal species is primarily abundant in neritic to upper bathyal sediments (< 600 m). Both linear and exponential calibrations suggest a temperature sensitivity of similar to 12% per degrees C that is similar to 4 times higher than observed in other species of deep-sea benthic foraminifera. Culture experiments support the core top calibration. We find no discernible effect of salinity and saturation on Mg/Ca. Comparison between the measured benthic foraminiferal delta O-18 and predicted equilibrium...

Evidence for regional cooling, frontal advances, and East Greenland Ice Sheet changes during the demise of the last interglacial ArchiMer
Irvali, Nil; Ninnemann, Ulysses S.; Kleiven, Helga (kikki) F.; Galaasen, Eirik V.; Morley, Audrey; Rosenthal, Yair.
High-resolution lithic and sea surface climate records are used to portray the progression of North Atlantic climate, hydrography, and Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) activity through the peak of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e into the last glacial inception. We use Eirik Drift sediment core MD03-2664 (57°26.34′N, 48°36.35′W), recovered south of Greenland, strategically located to monitor fluctuations in GIS extent and iceberg calving events. Our results show that a significant amount of ice-rafted debris (IRD) was present during the early MIS 5e, until gradually tapering off by 122 kyr BP due to a diminishing GIS. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the northern subpolar gyre reached peak values early in MIS 5e coinciding with peak insolation. Regional cooling...
