The Structural Change in the Supply Chain of Oil Palm – A Case of North Sumatra Province, Indonesia AgEcon
Nakajima, Toru; Matsuda, H.; Rifin, Amzul.
In this paper, we analyze the structural change in the supply chain of oil palm in North Sumatra, Indonesia, especially after the financial crisis of the late 20th century. We first describe the past and present market structure and conduct of oil palm industries in North Sumatra with an industrial organization approach based on our field study. The analysis reveals that the supply chain of oil palm in North Sumatra has changed such that farmers had more power to determine FFB prices over crushing companies, especially from 2001 through 2004. However, farmers lost bargaining power during 2007-2008 due to a decrease in palm oil demand, plunging of palm oil prices, and a regulation imposed upon crushing companies by the Ministry of Agriculture. To analyze...

Estimation of Asymmetric Price Adjustment in the U.S. Soybean Trade Using Rolling TAR: The Relation with Market Structure AgEcon
Nakajima, Toru.
The threshold autoregressive (TAR) model by Enders and Granger (1998) and Enders and Siklos (2001) is a popular econometric model that estimates asymmetric price transmission (APT) with non-stationary time series data. However, empirical studies have not considered much the arbitrariness of sample period selection and possible temporal variation of parameters or asymmetry. The purpose of this study is to estimate the APT from the U.S. domestic soybean prices to the export prices using the TAR model, and to trace the changes of APT using rolling woindow methodology of TAR. Another purpose is to analyze the relation between the APT and the market structure in the world soybean trade. The hypothesis is that the APT was positive, which means that the U.S....

Estimations of the price transmission and market power in canola export market: implication to canola import of Japan AgEcon
Nakajima, Toru.
In this paper, I analyze the price transmission of canola, or low erucic acid rapeseed, in the international market and the market power of canola exporting countries over one of the major importing countries, Japan. Canola oil production in Japan is almost completely dependent on the canola imported from Canada and Australia. The export from Canada generally accounts for more than 80% in recent years. Does Canada exercise market power over Japan? Does Canada have more market power than Australia in the Japanese canola market? What strategies should Japan have on canola import? To answer these questions, firstly I conducted an empirical analysis of asymmetric price transmission (APT), in which the speed of adjustments of the output price after the input...
