Irrigation Decision Rules for Cottongrowing in the Brookstead Area of the Darling Downs AgEcon
Nuthall, Peter L..
A decision problem faced by cottongrowers using irrigation is that of deciding the soil moisture level at which irrigation should occur. A simulation model was developed so that the effect on cotton yield of irrigation at different soil moisture levels could be explored. The output from the model was used to develop relationships enabling the determination of an optimal decision rule. The results indicate that under most situations heavy irrigation in the period "first open flowers to first open bolls" will be profitable.

MANAGERIAL ABILITY (THE FORGOTTEN RESOURCE) ITS ASSESSMENT AND MODIFICATION AgEcon
Nuthall, Peter L..
Survey information in most countries shows very clearly that farmers achieve a wide range of profitability levels. Some of the variation will be due to farmers having different goals and objectives, but a significant proportion will also be due to variations in managerial skill. If even modest skill improvements can be achieved the resource efficiency payoff will be significant and at little cost relative to many physical research programmes - this goal is worth seeking. Managerial skill improvement has received little attention in the past. Standard teaching methods can probably help to a certain extent, but many skills may be deeply imbedded thus requiring different methods. Evidence from cognitive therapy papers suggests basic traits can be modified, so...

ON THE USE OF DETERMINISTIC LINEAR PROGRAMMING FOR PLANNING IN A NON-CERTAIN ENVIRONMENT AgEcon
Nuthall, Peter L.; Moffatt, D.J..
Farm planning in the non-certain world is complex so that models which adequately represent this situation are difficult and expensive to experiment with. Thus a range of linear programming models based on simplifications has been suggested for planning under non-certainty. This discussion reviews the problem of farm system infeasibility which can arise from the Lise of these models and suggests an alternative approach.

Farm Computer Uptake and Practices in New Zealand AgEcon
Nuthall, Peter L.; Bishop-Hurley, G.J..
There is wide interest in both management circles and service industries in forecasts of the future uptake of computers on farm and horticultural businesses. Similarly, knowledge of how computer owning managers are utilizing them is of interest. From a 1992/93 postal survey of a stratified random sample of New Zealand producers it was determined that of the 24 per cent with computers, 19 per cent used them for business purposes and 5 per cent solely for entertainment and other non-business functions. An analysis of the length of past and anticipated ownership suggests New Zealand farmers are near the maximum uptake rate on the traditional sigmoid adoption curve. Existing ownership was positively correlated with farmer education level and farm size. On...

Psychometric Testing for Assessing Farmer's Managerial Ability (and Modelling the Origins of Ability) AgEcon
Nuthall, Peter L..
The key resource in efficient production is the management input used to coordinate the land, labour and capital. Yet, our understanding of this resource is still somewhat limited, especially the factors involved in improving the managerial ability of farmers. This paper summarises three tests developed to help assess managers, and uses the data collected through random surveys of all types of farmers to explain the origins of managerial ability. Survey data on the competencies farmers' believe are important in successful management is reviewed, and finally a computer based teaching package to develop the important competencies is outlined. The tests developed cover managerial style, the locus of control, and aptitude.

EXPLAINING ECONOMIC INEFFICIENCY OF NEPALESE RICE FARMS: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION AgEcon
Dhungana, Basanta R.; Nuthall, Peter L.; Nartea, Gilbert V..
Efficiency has been proven to be an important managerial tool in improving total factor productivity in agriculture. The four sources of economic inefficiency: allocative, technical, pure technical and scale inefficiency of a sample of seventy-six Nepalese rice farmers were examined using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) decomposition method. The inefficiency indices computed by the DEA were then used as the dependent variable in a Tobit (censored) regression model using decision- makers’ attributes as the explanatory variables. The results revealed relatively large inefficiencies among the farms sampled. The average economic, allocative, technical, pure technical and scale inefficiencies were 34%, 13%, 24%, 18%, and 7% respectively. There is also a...

Measuring the economic inefficiency of Nepalese rice farms using data envelopment analysis AgEcon
Dhungana, Basanta R.; Nuthall, Peter L.; Nartea, Gilbert V..
A data envelopment analysis of a sample of 76 Nepalese rice farmers reveals average relative economic, allocative, technical, pure technical and scale inefficiencies as 34, 13, 24, 18 and 7 per cent, respectively. The significant variations in the level of inefficiency across sample farms are attributed to the variations in the ‘use intensities’ of resources such as seed, labour, fertilisers and mechanical power. In addition, a second stage Tobit regression shows the variation is also related to farm‐specific attributes such as the farmers’ level of risk attitude, the farm manager's gender, age, education and family labour endowment. Based on the empirical findings, policy implications and development strategies for improving efficiency of Nepalese rice...

A Survey of Methods for Determining A Planning Horizon AgEcon
Nuthall, Peter L..
In multi-period farm planning problems involving uncertainty, the usual case in the real world, planning must involve a continuous process of re-evaluation. In this dynamic situation it is necessary to know the number of periods to include in the decision model to ensure optimality. This is referred to as the planning horizon. In practice, planning models used are frequently simplifications of reality so the ability to determine the planning horizon under a range of situations is an important facet of planning. This paper contains a survey of methods of determining the horizon and offers comments on the approach necessary to resolve the cases for which methods have not been developed.

On the Development and Use of Automated Management Aids AgEcon
Nuthall, Peter L..
The last twenty years have seen the development of many techniques designed to provide management information. Despite this, comparative budgeting is still the most commonly used analytical technique in applied farm management. There are moves, however, to change this situation through the development of systems designed to enable management aids to be readily available. These systems usually rely on the use of a computer. In this paper the current situation is reviewed by outlining system categories that have been developed and through discussing the important questions in the successful development and use of automated management aids designed for farmer use.

Estimation of Supply Functions by Linear Programming: A Note AgEcon
Nuthall, Peter L..
A method of determining mutually applicable supply functions, using the simplex method of linear programming, for products required in some kind of fixed proportion is outlined. The technique involves estimating the horizontal segments of a step supply function, i.e. the marginal cost function, rather than the usual method of estimating the vertical segments. The technique is demonstrated using a hypothetical milk farm.
