Manterola,Carlos; Otzen,Tamara.

Manterola,Carlos; Otzen,Tamara.

Otzen,Tamara; Manterola,Carlos.
Surgical Alternatives Used in the Treatment of Liver Hydatid Cyst: A Systematized Approach Based on Evidence (an Overview) International Journal of Morphology
Manterola,Carlos; Otzen,Tamara.
Echinococcosis is an endemic zoonosis in the south of Chile; we therefore have occasion to treat a large number of patients, particularly in the liver. Hepatic echinococcosis (HE) has its own morbidity and mortality due to evolutionary complications, to which the risk of complications related to the surgical procedures is added, the morbidity which has been reported up to 80 %. This is associated with a history of previous surgeries for HE, evolutionary complications of the cyst, the need for additional procedures such as the treatment of the disease in other simultaneous locations, etc. Moreover, reported mortality is up to 10 %, a situation that remains unchanged despite technological and therapeutic advances. The surgical treatment of HE can be divided...

Statistical Approaches for Analyzing a Continuous Outcome in Experimental Studies International Journal of Morphology
Sanhueza,Antonio; Otzen,Tamara; Manterola,Carlos; Araneda,Nelson.
In experimental studies the outcome variable is measured at initial time, usually called "baseline", and then in several times called "follow-up" measurement(s). The study question of interest in an experimental study is whether there is a significant difference effect between treatment and comparison group, after intervention. In addition, one wants to estimate the difference effect between groups. This paper studies some of the strategies, including a simulation process, that one can be used for analyzing data coming from an experimental study as above, and considers using or not using the baseline measurements. Three parametric and two non-parametric strategies are evaluated considering only one follow-up measurement. The baseline measurement is...

Análisis Crítico de la Literatura Biomédica International Journal of Morphology
Manterola,Carlos; Otzen,Tamara.

Molecular Epidemiology of Cystic Echinococcosis: Genotypic Characterization in Humans and Different Livestock International Journal of Morphology
Manterola,Carlos; Otzen,Tamara.
Echinococcus Granulosus (EG) is the major cause of cystic echinococcosis in humans and livestock in the world. In Chile is a zoonosis of great importance. The most frequently affected geographic areas are the Regions of Aysén, Los Rios, Los Lagos, Coquimbo and the Araucanía. Hence, it was discovered that in endemic areas of hydatidosis there could be several strains and genotypes of EG. In addition, there is evidence that some strains and genotypes are more infectious for human beings than others. This interesting phenomenon of the biology of EG has been studied using molecular biology techniques based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequence analysis, which has made it possible to characterize the cestode species complex called EG sensu lato (s...
