Health Risk of Heating Fuel Choice: A Simultaneity Causality Analysis AgEcon
Liu, Zheng; Pagoulatos, Angelos; Hu, Wuyang.
Combustion-generated pollutants, principally those from solid-fuels including biomass and coal when cooking and heating, bring out a significant public health hazard in both developed and developing countries. Most of the existing studies addressing this issue focus on developing countries, and on exposure when cooking rather than heating. By using Kentucky rural data, this research explores the health risk associated with heating fuel choice. Given the simultaneity between heating fuel choice and prevalence of asthma and allergy, we obtain the instrumental variable (IV) estimate for Logit models through the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM). After correcting for simultaneity bias, we do not find strong evidence supporting the causal relationship between...

Rider Preferences and Economic Values for Equestrian Trails AgEcon
Hu, Wuyang; Pelton, Marie E.; Pagoulatos, Angelos.
Recreational horseback riding is an important but less studied component of the equine industry. Using choice experiment data collected from a survey conducted in Kentucky, this study assesses rider preferences and economic values associated with various equestrian trail characteristics. Results indicate that although individuals have different opinions, trail characteristics such as length of trail, scenic views, and distance from home all have significant economic implications. In addition, riders prefer trails that are restricted for horse-riding only. Policy implications on maintaining current and creating new trails are given based on these results.

OPTIMAL MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES FOR ALFALFA PRODUCTION WITHIN A TOTAL FARM PLAN AgEcon
Debertin, David L.; Pagoulatos, Angelos.
This paper examines the impacts of alternative management strategies for the production of alfalfa within the context of a total farm plan. A linear programming model is used to represent a 600-acre farm which can grow either grain crops or alfalfa. Alfalfa production competes with the grain crops for available land, labor, machinery, and field time over a calendar of tillage, plating, cutting, spraying, and harvesting activities. The profitability of an acre of alfalfa and the contribution of alfalfa to net returns for the farm varies quite widely depending on the particular alfalfa management strategy selected.

Health Media Coverage and Consumer Choice: A Panel Data Econometric Analysis of the Domestic Cracker Market AgEcon
Johnson, Rutherford; Vickner, Steven S.; Pagoulatos, Angelos; Debertin, David L..
Americans are becoming more health conscious and more obese. The food industry attempts to capitalize on both of these current trends. In advance of government mandate, the dominant leader in the cracker industry introduced a trans fatty acid label to its products. The impact on demand of the voluntary introduction of this label varies across metropolitan area and depends on health-related media coverage, both local and national, and health attitudes of these metropolitan areas.

Nonpoint Source Abatement Costs in the Kentucky River Watershed AgEcon
Liu, Zheng; Schieffer, Jack; Hu, Wuyang; Pagoulatos, Angelos.
A growing share of water pollution in the U.S. can be attributed to nonpoint sources (USEPA 2002). Some of this trend can be attributed to declining point source (PS) emissions as a result of regulation under the Clean Water Act (CWA). However, fertilizer-intensive practices used to improve agricultural productivity over recent decades have also increased nitrate loads and resulted in water quality impairments. Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution from agricultural practices is generally exempt from federal regulation. However, some voluntary programs allow point sources subject to the CWA’s effluent limitations to meet their standards by purchasing offset credits reflecting reductions in NPS discharges to the same waters (USEPA 2004). Such water quality...

The Supply of Private Acreage for Public Recreational Use in Southern and Central Appalachia AgEcon
Liu, Zheng; Pagoulatos, Angelos; Hu, Wuyang; Fleming, Ronald A..
Public lands in Southern and Central Appalachia (SCA) available for outdoor recreational pursuits are limited relative to the rest of the county. This study identifies factors that encourage private land owners to permit public access to their land for recreational purposes and determines how much acreage would be offered in the Southern and Central Appalachia region. The Tobit and Heckman’s sample selection models suggest that the probability of offering land to the public is correlated with the number of acres offered. Having acreage suited for recreation is a positive determinant of acres leased but attributes developed by the landowner act as a disincentive. Type of recreational activity has no effect on the landowner’s decision and the supply of...

GOVERNMENT PRICE POLICIES AND THE AVAILABILITY OF CRUDE OIL AgEcon
Pagoulatos, Angelos; Debertin, David L.; Pagoulatos, Emilio.
This study examines the effects of price incentives on the availability of petroleum. Expected sustained higher crude oil prices to domestic producers constitute an incentive to increase both exploratory drilling and secondary and tertiary recovery of oil as well as production out of reserves. Reserve-production ratios tend to fall under high prices. Equalization of the domestic price to the real world price would make the U.S. self sufficient within a six year period. Constant prices result in no new additions to reserves after a five year period and very low production levels. Imports reach sixty-five percent of domestic consumption.

Rider Preferences and Values of Equestrian Trail Characteristics in Kentucky AgEcon
Pelton, Marie E.; Hu, Wuyang; Pagoulatos, Angelos.
A conjoint analysis of equestrian trail characteristics (trail length, scenic views, open land, bathroom/shower facilities, restricted use, distance, and entrance fee) is conducted for the state of Kentucky. The conditional logit results show location is an important determiner of willingness to pay. In particular, scenic views and restricted use are highly valued (WTP above $20). However, increased distance from home to the trail results in a negative willingness to pay.

SOIL EROSION, INTERTEMPORAL PROFIT, AND THE SOIL CONSERVATION DECISION AgEcon
Pagoulatos, Angelos; Debertin, David L.; Sjarkowi, Fachurrozi.
This study developed an intertemporal profit function to determine optimal conservation adoption strategies under alternative scenarios with respect to crop prices, relative yields, discount rates, and other assumptions. Special emphasis was placed on determining from the analysis when the switchover from conventional to soil-conserving practices should take place. Technological change was incorporated by allowing crop yields to vary over time. Our analysis thus provides a new, more precise measurement of the cumulative net benefit differential. The optimal period for switchover from conventional to soil-conservating practices was found to vary depending on the assumptions made about corn prices and discount rates. Empirical results were based on an...

Recreational Demand for Equestrian Trail-Riding AgEcon
Blackwell, Melanie; Pagoulatos, Angelos; Hu, Wuyang; Auchter, Katharine.
Using data collected from a combination of on-site and on-line surveys, this study examines recreational demand for equestrian trail-riding in Kentucky. A truncated, negative binomial regression is applied to analyze individuals’ visitation behavior consistent with a travel cost model. Results suggest that distance is the most significant determinant of average annual visits to a particular site. Various trail site characteristics, such as trail length, scenic overlooks, and trail markers, affect the number of visits an individual takes. Geographic information system (GIS) analysis permits the identification of equestrian population centers. Information obtained from this study offers a decision base for policymakers to use to manage existing equestrian...

HUMAN CAPITAL, INCOME, AND ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY: A STATE-LEVEL ANALYSIS AgEcon
Goetz, Stephan J.; Debertin, David L.; Pagoulatos, Angelos.
An empirical analysis reveals that states with more highly educated populations have better environmental conditions, after controlling for income, population density, and industrial composition. The strategy of raising human capital stocks to maintain or improve environmental quality is proposed as a complement, if not an alternative, to direct government intervention, which consists of command and control, market incentives, and moral suasion. Under this approach, general education becomes the control variable that guides economic behavior in a manner consistent with long-term environmental sustainability.
